The Life of a Lightsaber
"...the weapon of a Jedi Knight, not as clumsy or random as a blaster, an elegant weapon..." -Ben Kenobi

The weapon of a Jedi Knight? Would that go for all Jedi?

The question is, can lightsabers sense their surroundings? Yeah, sounds dumb, but listen.

In Episode II, Obi-Wan and Anakin are given lightsabers in the Geonosis arena. But, they aren't their own, and they both lose in their fight against Dooku, they fail horribly. You could blame this on their lack of experience, or on the lightsabers. The more I watch Star Wars, the more I get the feeling that, in a way, the lightsaber can sense things. No, not seeing, and smelling but, that it can sense their surroundings. That they can sense when their owners are holding them, and that with their individual owners, the Jedi and lightsaber is a team. Does it not seem that in the Clone Wars animated series, when Windu loses his lightsaber, that the saber itself is searching for him? And is it not obvious that once Windu retrieves his saber that he is much more at ease?

When using his own saber in Episode III, Anakin can easily kill Dooku, but not with the replacement that he gets in Episode II. And back to the Clone Wars, Luminara Unduli is telling her padawan how to make a lightsaber. In it, she seems to hint at the fact that she and her lightsaber, are one.

It would even seem that a Jedi has a bond with his or her lightsaber, that when they are apart, they are sad.

Or maybe I'm just trying to sympathize with a non-living thing. I dunno, but that fact just kinda jumped out at me one day. It just seems to me that when a Jedi goes into combat with his own lightsaber, he fights better. And that the lightsaber can sense when its master is holding it.

No profanity please.

May the Force be with us all! God bless!

Not to far off the mark. Its just like anything else we 'own'. Good example (or 2) think about when you have to drive someone elses car. The seats all off, the mirrors are different, it just drives different. When you get back into your own car...ahhhhhh. Also, when you spend the night (or a few nights) in a hotel. Different bed, shower etc. When you get home, you know....ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Great points!
I get what you mean,I guess a jedi's lightsaber is one of thier only real possesions aside from thier robes and maybe a trinkit or two.If you only had a few items they'd proboly be way more important to you.

On the other hand, Han did just fine with a lightsaber that didn't belong to him. ;)

Good theory, dude!

I think Obi-Wan and Anakin had trouble using differant sabers. They spend a lot of time using their lightsabers they'll get used to it, when they're given differant ones the feel differant, the weighting is probably differant too so they can't fight so well.

True, very true.

Yeah.

ANYTHING is reasonable for a galaxy far far away. ;)

True, or like a Star Wars fan. You must become one with the movies.

You know, this really makes sense, when you think about it! I can most certainly relate on this-things just feel different if it isn't yours. If it's another computer, all the settings are wrong, none of your pictures or games, it represents someone else. Naturally, you're going to be uncomfortable. The same could be said for a lightsaber. It may not be alive, per se, but if it was built by that one person, naturally it will resonate better with that person. (Like in KOTOR 2-the Exile's personal crystal. Even though they didn't build it, it was practically destined for them by the Force.)

Great blog!!

the lightsaber can sense things Hmmm, that's an interesting thought. I agree with marybrainchild, the Jedi do make their own lightsabers, it would only stand to reason that it would respond better to the person that built it.

I think you may have something here!

That's Impossible. Even for a Computer.

This is all from wookiepedia so I cannot totally trust it. However this entry on lightsabers explains that Jedi use the force to help in constructing them. So it makes sense that the Jedi had a strong bond with their lightsabers.

This entry on lightsaber combat mentions that Anakin studied different combat techniques in between his first and second battle with Dooku.

And this one on lightsaber combat mentions Obi-wan also changed some of his combat tactics between encounters with Dooku.

Again not sure how much I trust this info, but it is interesting.

Excellent points, MM13!

I think that a Jedi would certainly become "one" with his lightsaber in that he built it and, as GB pointed out, he also drew on the Force in its construction.

I like your idea that the saber somehow senses its Master; that's interesting. :) I'll think about that some more.

As far as using someone else's lightsaber, as others have mentioned, you would be uncomfortable using anything of anyone else's, so it would stand to reason that it would be the same with your saber. Add to that the facts stated above and it becomes even more of an issue.

Great entry!! :)
