First Step Into a Larger World
"You've taken your first step into a larger world." -Ben Kenobi, ANH

Today is supposed to be a happy day, but instead, it feels like one of the scariest days of my life. A harmless little Sunday in August isn't scary, you might sneer. But it is scary when it's your 18th birthday.

Yes, today I turn 18 years old. It is an age that is far less glorified than it seems when you're a kid. My younger friends are more excited about my turning 18 than I am! They keep exclaiming, "You can move out of the house!" They don't understand when I tell them I'm not moving just yet. One 13-year-old friend said, "18 is awesome! You can order stuff off the television!" Great. Yeah. Woo-hoo.

To almost every kid, 18 means freedom. But instead of thinking of the freedoms, I find myself thinking of the responsibilities. Moving out of a parent's home is a dream of most kids, but I tend to think not about the freedom, but about paying rent, utilities, and insurance. I think about finding a college and a way to pay for it, getting a career, and a job. And most of all, I think about being an adult.

When you're a kid, everyone expects you to make mistakes. After all, you're a kid. But when you're an adult, everyone expects you to act like an adult. And when adults make mistakes, they can't pass the responsibility off on their parents.

But, in spite of all that scaryness in the future, today is my birthday. The first day of the rest of my life. So, I'll take the opportunity to be a kid for the last time. I'll think of the freedoms of adulthood, even if just for one day. And I will take that first step into a larger world.

May the Force be with you,

Happy Birthday! I'm not that old yet but it seems that time is moving by so fast. I would really like to stay my age for a long time and savor every moment. Oh yeah, I guess that I'm sort of taking a step into a larger world, on Wednesday I start High School.

May the Force be with us all! God bless!

Have a very happy birthday. Don't be afraid of adult responsibilities and decisions. Choices about college and finances are tough. Making decisions is all about trusting yourself. If you follow your instincts and your conscience, you'll be fine. Have fun!

Happy birthday. Don't ever stop being a kid - Star Wars is good to keep that going.

Yeah, it sucks to turn 18 and not be filthy rich with a trust fund or something.

Reading what you wrote gives me a lot of confidence in you. Becoming an adult is a never ending process, but you're making a good start. Happy Birthday.:)

To help you enjoy the day just remember Qui-Gon's advice: keep your mind here and now...

Tell me about it. :|

And I will take that first step into a larger world.

Interesting, I paraphrased that same phrase in a 30-second video presentation speech at my high school graduation this year.

* HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR i12bajedi!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU........... *

Cograts on the big 18th B-day! Your thoughts though scary to you are actually refreshing to me......It seems to me that most teenagers today don't look at responsibility or even WANT to talk about it....you are on the right path....embrace your fear...for it is more wisdom that is guiding you and making you cautious of your future....Good luck and HAPPY BIRTHDAY.......ANGEL

Happy B-Day! Even though I'm more than 4 years younger than you, I can still sympathize with your realization. Luckily for me, I discovered that freedom wasn't always the funnest thing. I don't have to go through that sudden realization. Don't let your fear overcome you, listen you your advisors, but don't take their advice for granted that it's right.. I do hope I get to meet you in VMK though. I still don't know your screen.

A VERY Happy Birthday to you!!! :D

I'll take the opportunity to be a kid for the last time. Just remember - growing older and gaining responsibility does NOT mean you have to completely grow up :) Treasure your passions: if SW is one of them (which I assume it is), NEVER let that go - you'll regret doing so.

Becoming an adult doesn't mean to forget childhood. It's a chance to expand yourself and your horizons, and take advantage of opportunities you didn't have before.

You sound as though you have a good head on your shoulders - trust your feelings and make healthy choices....the rest will fall into place!! :D

Best of luck!! :x
