 | What is a 'true' Star Wars fan? |
I found myself asking this question during the 2005 Star Wars Weekends event at Disney-MGM Studios. You see, I had seen a lot of people with "Han Shot First" T-shirts walking around, and since I'd never believed that "Han Shot First", I decided to express my views in a sort-of-funny manner. I bought a T-shirt and some transfers and got to work. When I was done, I had a shirt that proudly proclaimed "Greedo Missed".
As I was sitting waiting for the Star Wars Edition of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire- Play It!" to begin loading, some guy came up to me and made a comment about my shirt, something about, "Either Han's a cold-blooded killer or Greedo's the worst shot in the universe. I mean he's at point-blank range; how could he miss?" I explained that I'd never believed that Han shot first because when I first heard of the-disagreement- years back, I promptly took out my VHS and tried to pause it at the exact frame (which is murder on VHS-as almost everyone knows) to prove my point. After about 20 tries, I got it, and became a firm believer that Greedo missed. I also stated that my shirt was a joke, anyhow. As the guy turned away, he uttered a sentence that will forever be burned into my brain: "Well, the real Star Wars fans are going to be along here in about five minutes." I was sorely tempted to snap back, "Well, I guess that excludes you, then, doesn't it?" but I didn't say a word. That guy almost ruined my day.
There's a Star Trek concept, IDIC. It stands for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, and it's a wonderful concept to teach acceptance. Many fans say, "You can't be a Star Wars fan 'cause you like Star Trek, too." Or, "You aren't a real Star Wars fan; real Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar." Or, "I'm a true fan, because I hate Ewoks." But, those are the very people who aren't true Star Wars fans. Star Wars is all about coexistence, I think. The 'aliens' live among the humans, the Hutts live among the Kaminoans, the Zabrak are right at home around the Aqualish. They embrace diversity, not destroy it. (Well, in the case of the Empire, they do destroy diversity, but we're not talking Imperials here.) So, fans should embrace diversity, too. To me, a true Star Wars fan is someone who has a genuine love for the films. I don't care whether you hate Jar Jar, dismiss the EU, think General Grievous is goofy, or dislike the soundtracks, I respect everyone's opinion (except those trolls who insist on trying to prove that {insert character name here} is gay; that I won't tolerate) and I think everyone else should, too.
It doesn't matter if you've been a fan for 28 years or are just getting started. Think that Anakin's whiney or that the Prequel dialogue is too cheesy? Go ahead. It doesn't matter whether or not you're a Star Wars trivia master. And Jedi or Sith loyalties? I don't care which! As long as we keep in mind that the Star Wars fan community would be absolutely boring if everyone hated Jar Jar, loved Imperial March, thought that the Anakin/Padme relationship was sickening, and dreamed of shooting Ewoks, we'll keep going strong. It's our differences that link us so closely, and only true Star Wars fans can accept that reality. The ones that can't accept it don't really count, I guess. So, go, enjoy our diversity. Accept everyone as a fan, regardless of their opinions. And, as always...
...may the Force be with you.
Oh, by the way... Greedo missed.

I just added you to my blog roll, The force is with you! I believe that those who try to make being a fan an exclusive thing are destroying the fun of being a fan, and are the exact opposite of a fan. But I am not here to say who's a fan and who is not. I stand with i12bajedi in exhorting tolerance for all those who profess to love this little thing called STAR WARS

I second darthbathory's "here here"! The phenomenon of the "ultimate and exclusive" fan (and by exclusive I truly mean one who excludes) pops up in everything from movie fandom to music fandom, and I have experienced both. We each have our own way of enjoying what we enjoy. To echo a wise green creature: love or love not...there is no right way.

Good entry, and very true. I've never really cared who shot first, because we see before the end of the conversation between Greedo and Han, that Han is getting his blaster ready. Han shooting second/the same time doesn't ruin the scoundrel image at all.
And the guy who was talking to you had some nerve to make a comment like that. I hate when people judge other people's loyalty and fandom by what they believe, what they like and what they dislike. And liking another saga and story doesn't make you less a fan, either. And some characters in the films aren't my personal favorite, but they are necessary to the plot.
I also like your idea for the shirt. Very good. ; )

I consider myself a pretty big fan (geek, weirdo, freak, whatever). I've got overpriced Star Wars replicas and costumes to prove it. However, anyone who has the nerve to rate other folks level of fan intensity is really, really weird. At it's most simplistic, Star Wars is an over-told tale of good versus evil that goes back as far as the beginnings of man. Some may disagree, but really, it's just a movie (series) - either you like them or you don't. And I can't wait for the upcoming television series!

I just enjoy the philosophies behind the saga and feel that this makes watching the movies and reading the books very influencial in my way of life.
I am one of those big guys who works out hard, plays lots of contact sports and eats red meat.
I want to meet a real Star Wars fan one day at a convention so that I can really appreciate the people who have made this saga come true. Remember, GL loves his fans and they are the ones who have made his universe come alive.

Absolutely agree !
Star Wars philosophy means respect within species, races and cultures, even if you are a proimperial like me !
Only one thing: I hate Jar Jar ! I like ewoks. I'm trying not to hate trekkies but I'll never like ST.
...well that were three things isn't ?

I have agreed a while back as well.
Han vs. Greedo - It nevered to me "who shot first", but "who killed who" that matters.
Ewoks - The people who hate them are questioning the archetypal conflict, which was used in making a lot of these movies.
Jar Jar - The haters are questioning human nature, same thing with Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker's "Nooooooooo!" line.
SW vs. ST - Not very a healthy habit to show interest in only one thing. Besides, ST came first, and that inspired SW a bit. Being part of a fan club is not the same thing as being part of a religious cult.

Very well put indeed! I've been around for the Star Wars ride since the beginning, and Greedo did miss. If I'm ever down at Mgm again I'll be sure to make a shirt like yours. Because that is just the dumbest thing I've ever heard this side of Mos Eisley. It doesn't matter. I do agree though everyone should live and let live, but some "fans" are down right rude.
Oh ya check out my theory on Greedo:

It just good clean fun.

Spread the love.
