Why does Yoda know the Rule of Two?
At the end of Episode I, we see Yoda telling someone (I think Mace Windu) the Sith Rule of Two; "Two there will be. A master and an apprentice. No more, no less." However, that rule was finalized by Darth Bane, who was believed dead at Ruusan. How did Yoda know the rule, if the Jedi thought that it could not exist?

Your thoughts would be appreciated,

Hmmmmm... That is interesting. Well he had been around for about 900 yrs. He was bound to find out that information at some point. Maybe we can find the answer on Wookieepedia!!

The way I saw it, the Jedi looked at the Sith Rule of 2 as being a Myth. They never knew for sure but it's one of those Legends that sticks in the back of your mind.

Like Vampires. You might not believe in them but if you were to actually see one......well you would start replaying everything you knew about the Vampire Mythos.

Part of the Sith legend was that they were not completely wiped out by the Jedi. Some kind of folk tale, some kind of mystic fable that somehow the Sith lives on and theres all this detailed material to go along with it.

Part of that legend has always been that they travelled in twos and will one day rise to power once again. It was like folklore. But then when the Sith really did reveal themselves.....Yoda began replaying the legend in his mind.

At their last encounter with the Sith, though, the Sith Lords were legion, and so the Jedi would most likely have thought that the rule had been scrapped.

Heres something else that's going to bake your noodle........

The Jedi also use part of Banes philosophy. A Master and an Apprentice.

plus we need to consider that GL's Story comes first and the EU comes second. According to Episode 1 you get the impression that the Sith always travelled in two's.

The EU says different, the EU depicts the Sith being numerous in it's Golden Age. However nothing in the films indicate that the Sith ever travelled beyond the Rule of 2.

Holding to the Movies, my guess is that the Sith used a master and an Apprentice because thats what the Jedi used. Where the Jedi could expand and flourish as a group of Force users....the Sith never could get past 2 people . Once one became powerful enough they would instantly kill the other Sith. This would elliminate any possibility of there ever being more then two.

This is just me speculating here btw, none of this is fact. But if the GL's idea of the Sith history is different from the EU........it's to be considered at least a possibility.

I remember hearing an EU answer to this -- that Yoda intercepted some clue about this before the era of the movies began -- but like Wari noted, it may be completely contrary to what GL originally envisioned.

Also, the most powerful Sith have come in master-apprentice duos: Darth Revan and Darth Malak, Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma, etc.

He did. About 200 B.B.Y., the Force itself began to flux, indicating that the dark side was growing in power. Yoda did get a hint about it, and perhaps inferenced from his history lessons.
