year 1978 was the release of Kenner's 3 3/4'' Chewbacca

This model of Chewbacca comes in a couple of variants.
Beside Chewbacca we know the name of a couple other Wookiees. Of course there are Tarfful but also Merumeru and Salporin.

Alex Dench is a basketball player cast in Australia. He played the wookiee Merumeru in Revenge of the Sith.

David Stiff played the wookiee Salporin and a multiple other background Wookiees in Revenge of the Sith.

Merumeru is a Wookiee chieftain in the battle of Kashyyyk. That is he you see in the picture and note that his helmet is digitally added afterwards.

Salporin was a mighty Wookiee warrior that we could see protecting the beaches from droid invaders in the battle of Kashyyyk. His name is first mentioned in the 1991 "Heir to the Empire" novel.
