 | Hail to the Sith |
I am back! I have returned after what seems like weeks, but is probably only days, maybe hours. Time has gone slowly recently. I have not written because I have not had free time. You see, my great grandmother passed away on Thursday, after 93 years on Earth. So my schedule has been pretty packed, with the funeral home, the funeral, the cemetary. But the point of my blog is this: OUR COUNTRY IS LED BY A SITH LORD!!!!
In a 2005 speech (right after the release of ROTS, I might add), our own President Bush pretty much claimed to be a Sith Lord! And I quote: "If you are not with us, then you are with the terrorists." Hmmmm, sounds kinda like when Anakin said to Obi-Wan on Mustafar "If you are not with me, then you are my enemy.". Obi-Wan quickly comesback with, "Only a Sith deals in that kind of simplicity.", or something like that. Although Bush has been marked as "simple" (not that I have any less respect for our president, or personally believe this), but a SITH? Ok, maybe. But still, did President Bush see the movie and have Star Wars on his mind when he wrote that speech, or did he not know he was quoting Darth Vader? Only he (or his speech writer) know for sure. But I can tell you this, if when Vader said "with me or against me", he meant that against him was bad. If this is the same with Bush, does that make following the U.S. the "Sith", or we think we're good, but we're really evil? As a freedom loving American, I certainly hope not.
God bless America, and May the Force be with you!

You are sure to get the comments riled with this one. It's been done a lot.
Not stating a side, the "funniest" speech ever was just after September 11, 2001. There was a great speech. The country was moved. I was moved. It was a good speech.
Then, about a year later I get around to watching THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. In it, James Bond's boss gives him the same speech. Word for word in some points. The "funny" part, the James Bond flick was done in 1999.

Well, personally I wouldn't have a very hard time believing that Bush was a Sith or even the Sith's apprentice.

Huh, huh, huh.....gonna get comments about this one...
And, as to whether Bush is actually a member of an order of evil Force-users, centered in a Galaxy possibly millions of light-years away, I have my doubts.....
I'd say more, but....

Bush said that long before ROTS came out. I specifically remember cringing at the obvious political commentary when I heard that line in ROTS.

Whether it was before ROTS or not, the line still seems a bit...extreme.

Islamofacisits hijacking our planes and flying them into our buildings is extreme. Wanting, nay, needing to defend our country by whatever means necessary is not.

What is it about villains and the whole "if you're not with me, you're against me" thing? I was watching Disney's "Beauty & the Beast" the other day (I have a young child who loves that movie). The villain (Gaston) and the townspeople were going to attack the Beast. Belle tried to stop Gaston, and he said, "If you're not with us, you're against us." I was surprised to hear that line; it immediately reminded me of Anakin's line in ROTS.
Your great-grandma lived a long life. My condolences to you and your family.

I think Bush is more of a Dooku than a Sidious. I think America has done some pretty terrible things lately in the name of venting anger at what happened on 911 (I read recently that the President is considering vetoing a bill that would outlaw the use of waterboarding - a form of torture used in interrogation! The fact that an American president is considering ALLOWING torture is pretty indicative of the direction our country is headed).

But of course, we had done some terrible things before, which why terrorists came to our shores in the first place. People do not organize attacks without warrant. Yet...I have faith in our country and the people in it, and I hope that the behavior of our "elected" leaders (if you can call any leader elected who is basically appointed by a basically untouchable governing body like the Supreme Court or even an outmoded organization like the electoral college - which basically ensures your vote really does not count) does not truly represent us as a whole.

I do think there are a lot of apathetic people in our country though - people that would rather know the outcome to season 4 of BSG or who won American Idol than what is happening to the detainees in Gitmo Bay. Like the Sith, there is definetly a ruling class in our country which uses misdirection on a daily basis...and Bush is a part of it (but so is the Democratic party). I think our country needs less Sidious and more Mon Mothma - somebody who doesn't shirk from a fight but fights for the right reasons.

I know. I did, too.
I really don't like that line because sometimes there are things that are just plain right and there are things that are just plain wrong. There is good and evil. The Jedi believe this, so Obi-Wan's line just seemed out of character to me.
Anyway, I do not think that Bush is a Sith. It seems a little...improbable to me.

caldre, I think most politicans are more like Sidious. It is kind of sad, actually. It is not just the politicans, though. The media does it all the time. For instance, they never tell you how much improvment has been made in Iraq as far as the Iraqis quality of living, they only tell you the bad stuff. Also, they never show the majority of Iraqis who are so afraid that America will pull out early, they only show the minority who want us out.

Oh, and about your comment that Bush was elected by the Supreme Court. The media made a big deal about those votes that were left uncounted. Do you know what the majority of those votes were? They were votes from military men and women, who, might I add, vote overwhelmingly Republican.
slow, I think a lot of times political leaders use popular movies lines because they are popular and sometimes it just helps to get the point across. It is kind of funny, though.
This 750 character limit is sure annoying.

Yeah, ain't it though?
I had a couple friends in the military, and I wonder if they would vote Republican if their news was not filtered to them. My friend got back from Baghdad and had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned Bush almost choking on a pretzel...

I think you're right about all politicians being like Sidious. What we need is Mr. Smith of Mr. Smith Goes To Washington Fame. An everyday guy, not a career politician. Maybe Ralph Nader as Vice President and a charismatic entertainer type as prez...somebody who would inspire people like a bona fide war hero or (unfortuantely) an actor...I heard Ben Affleck wanted to run for office...hahah
