As we all (should) know, the Tusken Raiders wear protective cloth around their entire body, in order to protect themselves from the Tatooine suns. However, assuming the Star Wars Galaxy follows Darwinian evolution, why do they need them. If they are indeginous to Tatooine, which they are, by now they should have evolved enough not to require these garments. If you are fortunate enough to own the brand new book "Jedi v.s. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force", you will remember that in Anakin's biography, on pg. 212, there is an illustration of Ani meeting a Tusken Jedi. The Tusken is in their traditional garb, albeit fewer layers. Also, there is no distinct "rags" look, as if they are nice clothes. That led me to believe, and I think you will agree, that Tusken Raiders wear their coverings for enviromental protection, but more as a cultural tradition.

As always, I am open to your comments.

That's pretty much the same explanation that was given in KOTOR I, the garments have a specific religious importance.

I read somewhere that it was mostly cultural too. But still, think about Eskimo tribes and the Bedouins. Both have lived in extreme conditions indigenously for a very long time, and they pretty much over themselves from head to toe as well. Biological evolution takes a very, very long time. I would think the cultural attributes are what evolved around the necessities of their environment.

I see what you mean about the Eskimos, however, we are lead to believe that the Tuskens have been living on Tattooine for millenia. That is what caused me to think that it was cultural. For example, Tuskens only remove their coverings on their wedding night. Only their spouse may see them.

I believe that they wear them for cultural reasons - as showing flesh was not socially acceptable - i cant remember which novel this is stated in but the following from wookiepedia should help:

Tuskens were forbidden to take off their protective clothing in front of others, except in a few very specific circumstances: at childbirth, on their wedding night and during coming-of-age rituals (two events which were often one and the same), and as adults, only in the privacy of their tents with their blood-bound mates. Breaking this rule meant either banishment or death, depending on the specific tribe rules.

Tuskens would also exile any member of the tribe with a deficieny or disability (lost an arm in the example of A'Sharad Hett) or if their bantha mount died they would be sent out into the desert
