Darth Hitler
Greetings,
Today in class we were talking about the Holocaust and of Hitler's rise to power. There are many similarities between Hitler's rise to power and Ep. III. Both had Storm Troopers (or Stormtroopers). Both were at one time Chancellor. Both made amendments to their constitution giving them more power. Both were given emergency powers. Both spread propoganda labeling a religious group as evil and set about to destroy that group. There is question about their demise. (Some people still doubt Hitler commited suicide, are there more Palpatine clones?) Both tried to reclaim something that was lost in the past. (Hitler tried to re-conquer land lost after WWI. Palpatine regained Sith Rule). Both were constantly surrounded by guards and soldiers. Both used speeches to win over a crowd. Check out the SS uniforms. Now check out Imperial Officer's uniforms.

Freaky. George Lucas is a genius.

It's doubtless that George used some aspects about Hitler to develope Palpatine. I also noticed how the Soviets called those they killed, "enemies of the republic." So did Palpatine.

I've been waiting for this. I remember reading that Lucas based Palpatine off of hitler.

Lucas took a lot from history. The uniforms the Imperial officers wore were patterned off of the Nazi outfits. Obviously, the concept of Empire, and the uniforms of the Imperial Royal Guards came from the Romans.

I think, specifically for the Emperor, Lucas used Hitler and the forthcoming Anti-Christ as models. Hitler believed, and I'm sure the Anti-Christ does/will too, that if you tell a lie long enough people will accept it as truth. You can see this illustrated in the Prequel Trilogy.

Yeah, I've heard Mr. Lucas's top inspirations for the Emperor and the fall of the Republic were Hitler, Caesar, and Nixon.

Great job putting together all those similarities between Hitler and Palpatine--I hadn't realized just how many there were!

I'd also add, in addition to trying to wipe out a religious group, that both H and P were responsible for institutionalized xenophobia.

And in both cases - small groups banned together to try and stop them. In WWII many brave citizens stepped up to help protect the people Hitler tried to destroy despite the risks to them.

Great blog!

The Prequel Trilogy shows something else as well. It shows how Democracy is tried to be protected at all cost (by the Jedi) for the freedom it's supposed to bring to people but it shows as well that this Democracy can be so easily be corrupted. Quite franckly, a lot of that is happening right now in our real world and not by the Nazis this time.
