Grievous and Sabers
I know that this question should probably go on the message boards, and yet, it is here anyway. I was watching Ep. III again and wondering, how does General Grievous wield lightsabers? I was reading New Jedi Order: Edge of Victory (I can't remember which one, probably the second.). Anyway, Tahiri and Anakin (Solo) are trapped in a space station when guards confiscate their lightsabers. Later on, they encounter the guards playing with the weapons and Anakin remarks that they will hurt themselves because no one without the aid of the Force can safely or efficiantly (is that the correct spelling?). They are more likely to hurt themselves rather than their targets. So how can General Grievous wield fourlightsabers as well, if not better, than a Jedi when he cannot channel the Force? I know many of you will have your ideas, but I will post my thoughts on the subject to save you precious little time.

Arguments for: #1: In Empire Strikes Back, Han uses Luke's saber to gut open a tauntaun. #2: General Grievous is a cyborg, and his two opposable thumbs and droid abilities may give him advantage so that he does not need the Force.
#3: He was trained by Count Dooku, who is very skilled and is obviously able to teach the art well (In direct defiance of the Sith rules set out by Darth Bane, (Count Dooku takes on his own apprentice, Assaj Ventress, making the number of Sith 3).

Arguments against: #1 When Han cuts the tauntaun, he only uses the saber to make one cut. It was only turned on for a few seconds. #2 Even with these abilities, he still has a human brain, and would have trouble (especially since he suffered brain trauma during the accident) controlling four lightsabers at one time, a feat even the most skilled Jedi have trouble with, using them well, and still controlling them so precisly as not to injure himself. #3 It is true Dooku can teach well, to a person who is Force sensitive. Even a skilled fighter such as Dooku would have trouble teaching the arts to a non Force sensitive, which includes cyborgs with asthma.

If you have any ideas of your own, or want to add to my brain goo, feel free to comment. Again, I know this should probably be on the message boards, so please, no comments concerning this.

May the Force be with you,

Yeah, I was confused by that, too. If Grevious was "trained in...Jedi arts" does that mean one can be trained in technical uses, but not ones that require the Force? I think even if this is the case it is bad business (but Dooku was a Sith).

I don't generally go by what the books say, though. Obviously, Han could use a lightsaber for a minor chore and the original STAR WARS novel (December 1976) has Ben telling Luke that lightsabers are still used in some sectors of the galaxy (which might indicate that when Ben says lightsabers are "the weapon of a Jedi", he means they are the choice weapon of the Jedi, but not exclusive to Jedi use).

Didn't someone say that Grievous had some control of the Force? And also, considering Grievous was mostly a droid, maybe he just didn't make mistakes that would dangerous to living beings.

Although he was mostly a droid, he still had organic internal organs and brain. Grievous had no control of the Force. He was a Kaleesh war general who was in a shuttle crash (secretly planned by Dooku). The Geonosian armor and life support would not give him Force powers. He may have had Force power prior to the accident, but it is not documented anywhere and is highly unlikly. If he did have power, the Jedi probably would have taken him away.

Interesting thoughts there ; . I was reading Star Wars Visionaries comic book to my daughter last night before her bedtime and apparantly some of General Grievous's body parts were Qui-Gons...don't ask...it kind of confussed me too.
And welcome to blogsville, you are new here right ;)

Grievous was trained in the Jedi arts so thats how I think he was so good with a saber.

The reason people without a connection to the force can't use a lightsaber is simple. If you've ever held a sword you know that the blade has weight thus you can feel where it is in space in relation to you. With a lightsaber it's just a beam of light and as such has no weight so without the force to guide it you can't feel where the blade actually is and you'd end up choping your own arm or leg off while flinging it around. Grievous being mostly cyborg would have had some sort of system in place that would not allow the blades to come close to himself and that's why he can wield a lightsaber as a non force user.
