Today, I got my first "Whats' the Story?" win, for my submission for
Cane Adiss. I was somewhat surprised that that entry was chosen, as I personally didn't see it as being as strong as my other Round 6 entries, but apparently The Powers That Be disagreed with that assessment.
Anyway, here's a little Behind the Scenes on Cane . . .
His parental collective berated him for keeping his heads turned toward the skies rather than to the mundane world around him.
-"Parental Collective" was the only element remaining of my early attempts at describing a social structure for these two-headed beings. Originally, it meant all adults with the responsibility to look over a year's hatching of Yuvernian eggs in a given community. Parentage among Yuvernians was more about what *year* you were hatched, rather than who laid the egg you hatched from. Alas, there wasn't nearly enough room to cover these sorts of details in the entry, especially since I had to discuss them inobtrusively in the context of Cane's life, so they wound up cut early on. Nevertheless, I left "parental collective" in as a broader hint that their culture differed from Humans and similar species in important ways.
When he came of age, he got his chance to leave when the trader Kal'falnl C'ndros visited Yuvern, in the Oplovis sector. Most light freighters are too cramped for Yuvernians, but C'ndros' ship had been modified for the tall Quor'sav.
-The Quor'sav Kal'falnl C'ndros, and the fact that she has an oversized freighter, comes from the Premiere set of the
Star Wars Customizable Card Game. Readers familiar with old RPG supplement
Secrets of the Sisar Run will know that her ship is a modified CorelliSpace Gymsnor-3 light freighter called the
Shelltooth; I wanted to mention the ship, but every attempt I made looked like a namedrop rather than an integral part of the article, and took up wordcount that was better used elsewhere, so I dropped it.
-Yuvern was a planet first mentioned in the
Rebel Alliance Sourcebook; more on this later. My entry didn't originally mention at this point that Yuvern was in the Oplovis sector; this clarification was an addition.
He became a solid pilot under C'ndros's tutelage, and visited dozens of worlds before they parted ways on Tatooine.
-The reference to Adiss being dropped off on Tatooine is meant to coincide with C'ndros's appearance there in
A New Hope.
Adiss turned to Jabba the Hutt, claiming he'd "traveled to every uncharted planet in the galaxy" to get in Jabba's good graces.
-The boast of having "traveled to every uncharted planet in the galaxy" is, of course, from the original WtS prompt. Most of the info in that prompt came from Cane's appearance in the Jabba's Palace expansion of the SWCCG.
The entire Imperial Oplovis sector fleet was in-system, and before he could flee, he was ordered to receive inspectors . . . Before they could get far, however, a Rebel battle line arrived and engaged the fleet. Overwhelmed, the fleet withdrew; the officer aboard Adiss's ship ordered him to meet the fleet at Harrod's Planet.
-The events surrounding Cane's return to Yuvern (as well as Yuvern itself) are from a vignette in the
Rebel Alliance Sourcebook about Alliance Intelligence. Eight months prior to the vignette, "Oplovis Fleet got drubbed by a line of battle from the Alliance Fleet in - where was it? - Yuvern system. Two months later, the Emperor's creature Vader visited Oplovis, "retiring" the unfortunate admiral in Vader's inimitable fashion and placing a new admiral in charge. Since then, Oplovis has pretty much done nothing, staying within covering range of it's base on Harrod's Planet." Those details, along with Oplovis Fleet's requisition of more supplies, led the hard working analyst Commander Zgorth'sth to realize that Oplovis was ready for another scrap, leading to a successful Alliance ambush of the fleet at Atrivis. Here, we learn that Cane was an eyewitness to the battle that set all of that up.
Adiss returned them without incident, agreeing to keep an eye out for further Rebel activity before leaving and finishing his job.
-His agreement to keep an eye out for Rebel activity is, again, from the CCG via the WtS prompt.
He was just returning from a run (using Jabba's private elevator, the only one big enough for him) when Leia, as Boushh, attempted to get into Jabba's good graces by delivering Chewbacca; he stuck around for the events that followed, and was aboard Jabba's sail barge when it was destroyed. Whether or not he was among the few that escaped is unknown.
-The "Jabba's private elevator" comment is a nod to
Star Wars: Complete Locations, which depicts Adiss in that elevator while Boussh is negotiating for more money. Presumably, it didn't take him long to get to the Audience chamber.
-His presence on the sail barge was dictated by my dwindling word count, and by the fact that I had heard that his entry in the "Who's Who in Jabba's Palace" (from
Star Wars Insider 60) marked him as being deceased. However, it seems that LucasFilm didn't want his death to be so certain; the addition of the final sentence suggesting he may be one of those who escaped is the largest change they made to my entry (everywhere else it was simply small clarifications, like changing "Oplovis Fleet" into "Imperial Oplovis sector fleet").
And now you know . . . the rest of the story.
