In November of 2005, I wrote my first ever Star Wars blog. Now, over a year later, I've written my 50th. So I figure, how about I take a look back at what I've done and how I feel about it.
First of all, I have been anything but consistent in my timing. Sometimes I have lots of ideas, sometimes I don't, and sometimes I'm just too busy. But what concerns me, as I look back, is how much do I like the content I've written?
And what better way to assess personal feeling than with mathematics?
I looked back and categorized each of my blogs into one of five categories: Thoughtful, Great, Frivolous, Useless, and Somewhere in Between.
In my introduction to the blog I state that I either write thoughtful or frivolous blogs, and those are the two main separators here, but in reality there are more shades of grey. "Useless" blogs are those that are short, quick, basically pointless, and I'm not exactly proud of. "Great" blogs simply are those blogs that I am particularly proud of, or put an extra amount of effort into (that doesn't necessarily mean they're actually great or are even my favorites). And somewhere in between are those that are harder to classify.
Note that in virtually all cases, Useless technically also is just a subcategory of Frivolous, and likewise Great is a subcategory of Thoughtful, but that is not reflected in the numbers below.
The Results:
Great: 10%
Thoughtful: 26%
Somewhere in Between: 20%
Frivolous: 32%
Useless: 12%
Having feared the worst, I'm pleased that I've stayed close to an average distribution, though I am a bit ashamed of the useless number. I'm also more surprised than anything at how many of my blogs don't clearly fall into one category or another.
I've had a great time reading and writing these Star Wars blogs, and I foresee no end to that fun any time soon
So there I have it. My public self evaluation. Now it's time to stop talking about myself and get back to the good stuff.
