Thoughts
I was reading Jedi Eclipse today, one of the earlier books in the NJO series (hey, I'm working on it), but at the same time I had The Empire Strikes Back playing on TV. I rarely read books and watch TV at the same time, in fact I think this was a first, but it was kind of interesting.

What was striking was reading Han and hearing him speak at the same time. Books have a way of crafting their own imagery, but having the real McCoy talking to me while reading him speak was surprising.

Especially interesting was the interplay of the stories. In ESB, Han and Leia's relationship is in its infancy, but what I'm reading takes place not only in the distant future of their relationship, with a history, a marriage, and a family, but at a time where that family is troubled with conflict and sorrow. While it isn't the end of their relationship, it is still a sharp contrast to the romantic beginnings of their relationship. It was weird to experience glimpses of both at the same time.

Now on to some less profound things I got from this ESB hearing experience.

When Lando said "That ship has saved my life quite a few times. She's the fasted hunk of junk in the galaxy," I could have sworn I heard Han reply "How's the gas mileage treating you?" He said 'gas mine,' of course, but oh what a topical conversation it became in my mind.

What's up with Yoda telling Luke to "clear his mind of questions?" What kind of teaching method is that? Tsk tsk, Yoda. Socrates would be ashamed.

That's all for today.

Interesting thoughts indeed.

I've never tried reading and watching TV at the same time. I would have trouble keeping my mind on either one or the other. Interesting observations though.

Have you ever tried reading any of the books and have the ENTIRE soundtrack running. There are some weird sync ups there.

"How's the gas mileage treating you?"
jeez, if they lived here they would only do the kessel run if it was really, really necessary, like say if they had run out of pizza pockets or something.

Great thoughts!

I wouldn't normally even think of trying it, it just sort of happened. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done it if it weren't a movie I've seen a million times. I didn't need to be paying attention to the movie, so it worked out surprisingly well, with surprising side effects.

I don't think I could handle watching ESB while reading a SW book... unless it's from the original Zahn trilogy, which lifts most of its dialogue from the movies, anyway.

Very interesting. I don't know that I've ever done that intentionally, but I may have to try now.

What's up with Yoda telling Luke to "clear his mind of questions?"

Of course this could be debated to no end, but to me it always meant that Luke's mind was jumbled with preconceived notions and distractions. Yoda was telling him to clear his mind of questions so he could actually see and hear the lessons he was being given in the present, rather than dwelling on the past. The most valuable questions Luke can ask are the ones to himself which he answers himself.

Maybe that was Yoda's polite way of telling luke to SHUT UP...]:)

I personally cant read with the TV on at all, totally distracting no matter what it is.

if my wife is watching TV and I wanna read I have to do it in another room or I lose total concentration.

I wonder if anyone in the GFFA ever created an alternative fuel source...imagine, a ship that runs on Bantha Poodoo....

How intriguing, jj, to watch and read at the same time. I thought you were going to say you were reading that book (ESB) while watching the film. Now, that would have been interesting! See how the two jive, and such.

That would have been something if Han had asked about the mileage! :^O Yes, indeed.

I could comment on Yoda's direction to Luke . . . but that would take an entire blog. ;)

Great thoughts here. It is kind of cool to see in the mind's eye the character speaking as well as on screen ... double the Star Wars, double the fun I guess!

What I find profound about TESB is Yoda telling Luke he isn't ready to fight Vader when Yoda should have been the one to come out of exile to fight Vader with Luke as a tagalong to help out.

But nooooo the puppet wasn't good enough to give us that then lolz.
