Phantom Menace Palpatine hint
Torwards the end of the movie when the burning of master jinn's body when Yoda and Mace Windu are talking to eachother they release a MAJOR hint leading to the sith lord.

MACE WINDU: There is no doubt. The mysterious warrior was a Sith.

YODA: Always two there are... no more... no less. A master and an apprentice.

MACE WINDU: But which one was destroyed, the master or the apprentice?

And then there is a side view of Senator Palpatine's face.

Yeah, then they do a close up on palpatines face while only focusing on him. He has kind of a sad look on his face for some reason.

I actually think that the look is of arrogance. Like, "Ohhh ya. i got everything happening right now and on top of that my APPRENTICE just beat a would-be MASTER"

Yeah I don't like that hint, cause someone who was watching that film first before the OT might realize that he is the Sith, and then all of what happens in ROTS isn't as much of a shock to someone who was watching the PT first. I am sure there will be people who will see it that way for the first time, and that shock might be bigger to them than Vader as a daddy was to us, and I think that scene might ruin that shock. I just watch the films from that perspective sometimes, and from that perspective it hurts that scene. From our perspective its a neat scene, because most of us knew already. Imagine if there was a hint at Vader being Lukes father, that might have killed the shock of that.

The other hint is Palpatine saying " We will watch your career with great intrest" to Anakin

Sad look on Palpatine's face? Losing Darth Maul might have had something to do with it. Or he could have been putting on the right game face for those in attendance, particularly the Jedi. That and he could have been scouting out his new apprentice. Since so many Jedi were present at Qui-gon's funeral, it would make sense that Dooku would have been in attendance, being his former master and all.

Palpatine's thought at the funeral "Yes Yoda, there was 2 of us. At the end of all this, there will be ONLY 2 of us. You just watch your back. And Mace, get ready for some deep pan frying.. Hahaha" Probably a smirk would be good Palpy! ]:)

Nah, Palpatine wasn't sad to lose Maul, he was just a placeholder for Anakin. Same with Dooku; "His death was a necessary loss."
