 | Was the force really ever balanced? |
Anakin Skywalker was said to bring balance to the force....but did he? In my opinion he didn't. When I think of balancing the force I think of a balance beam type of scale. I think of putting all sith in the universe on one platform and all the Jedi on another one and them being equal. If there are 3 sith there should be 3 Jedi....or at least having equal knowledge of the force or equal power.
You can't say he brought balance by eliminating the last two sith because who says sith are the bad guys and who determines that the Jedi are the bad guys? If you are a Sith you wont go around think of yourself as a bad guy you will think of your self as a good guy and say they Jedi are the bad guys and same thing the other way around.
So Anakin brought balance by eliminating that last two bad guys....or good guys? After killing them more sith came.
So in my opinion I don't the think the force is ever balanced.

I think the balance was achieved when opposing forces finally reached equilibrium. This includes all things, not just Jedi or Sith. The Force includes everything, so it only makes sense to assume everything was a part of the balance.

but you could also argue that by eliminating the vast majority of the jedi order that he brought balance. Think about this. Yoda taught for 800 years the ways of the Jedi. And it only led to complacency and inaction and the ultimate descruction of the order. You see that when he taeches luke, he leaves out key elements, such as posessions, love (he later married Mara Jade), attachments (the only reason he objected to Luke going to cloud city was that he was not ready for the truth, and that Vader would kick his butt), and many others. Luke repeatedly channeled his anger and agression and fears, but never really drew his stregnth form them.

Plus, you can interpret theh Prophesy many ways. Example: Luke was Vaders son, so through Vader, balance was brought by way of Luke, and later Leia. I personally believe that the phrase "bring balance to the force" was meant in the sense that the Force was to return to its natural state. There were force sensitives all over the galaxy, some of whom no doubt knew the dark side, so the death of two sith could not possibly defeat the dark side. Who said the the dark side was ever destroyed. Also, the new jedi order learned to channel their anger, fear, and agression, and use them to their advantage without allowing them to take over them.

Now when I say natural state, I mean not twisted and perverted like the powerful Sith of old did, but rather used in moderation and for good or peaceful means. But lets also not forget that the empire killed off many force sensitive species to preserve the power of the new order, so there arent too many of them left, either.
I must disagree and say that through Luke and the New Jedi Order, and the final defeat of the dark jedi later on, effectively brought some degree of balance to the force.

It was GL's intention not to use the term "Balance" as an equilibrium of opposing forces. It has nothing to do with the number of Sith vs the number of Jedi. It has to do with Harmony - the other definition of Balance - as a Balanced Ecosystem.
Here is a further explanation, which is based in Lucas' own thoughts on the matter.

I agree with The Darek Moose]
just look at the culture of the Bakurans! they belive in the Cosmic balance... that is a little different than the force but it involves balance... Yen and Yang.... good or bad... regular or extra crispy.... everything revolves around balance, even in SW

Yar! I agree with that Moose feces guy... in fact, I'll throw in my own little version of the theory while I'm at it.
You've really got to wonder if you believe that balance is equal parts on a scale, because the "balance" you're seeking was un-done 25 years later. Seems kinda silly to have this all-important prophecy and for it to be squashed so soon after-ward.

In case anyone has not noticed in Episode IV there are two Jedi (Yoda and Obi-wan) and two Sith (Emperor and Vader)

In the SW universe force sensative beings arent restricted to any certain race, gender or species so they can never be wiped out.
And as long as there are always force sensatives out there, there are always gonna be some that go "bad".
So, as long as its impossible to eliminate either side we should at least be able to dispense with any talk of Jedi or Sith being defeated "once and for all".
Even if the Empire was succesful in hunting and killing every force sensative they came across (including Luke and Leia) it'd still just be a matter of time before more sprang up or were born the next day.
So I guess balance, in the case of the prophecy, was refering to power slipping to far in favor of either direction.

That being the case, I think Vader gets double credit on the prophecy.
The Jedi were far more powerfull until he helped ahnihilate the order.
Then the pendulum swung way to far in the other direction with the Sith (even though numbering only 2) once the Empire was in full swing.
Until he helped (Luke did provide a painfull distraction afterall hehe) destroy the 2 Sith lords.
So then were back to the good guys being in power, but not overwhelmingly.
After ROTJ theyre constantly struggling to hold the New Republic together from all manner threats both foreign and domestic. Pretty fairly balanced at that point.
