Why so Suprised?
I was sitting by a fire earlier today trying to keep warm and I was thinking about the fights between the Jedi and the Sith throughout the entire saga. I went back to thinking of TPM and the Jedi council throughout that first movie. A certain scene crossed my mind.

Qui-Gon: My only conclusion can be that it was a Sith Lord.

Mace Windu: A Sith Lord?!?

Ki-Adi-Mundi: Impossible! The Sith have been extinct for a millennium.

Mace Windu: I do not believe they could have returned without us knowing.

Yoda: Hard to see, the dark side is. Discover who this assassin is, we
must.

Ki-Adi-Mundi: I sense he will reveal himself again.

Then I began thinking of the Prophecy of the Chosen one, Anakin Skywalker. The Prophecy stated Anakin would destroy the Sith and bring Balance to the force.

This brought me to think of another scene in the movie.

Qui-Gon : A boy... his cells have the highest concentration of
Midi-chlorines I have seen in a life form. It is possible he was conceived
by the midi-chlorines.

Mace Windu : You're referring to the Prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force...you believe it's this boy?

Qui-Gon : I don't presume...

Yoda : But you do! Revealed your opinion is.

Qui-Gon : I request the boy be tested.

It is quite obvious the Jedi Council was familiar with the Prophesy. If they knew the chosen one was supposed to destroy the Sith and bring balance...then why was the council so surprised to hear Qui-Gon had encountered a Sith? They must have known the Sith would come back along sooner or later.

Thoughts Appreciated,

The Prophcey goes like this, according to George Lucas.
A person will be concieved by the Midi-Chlorians, he will have the highest count of Midi-Chlorians. His destiny will be to bring balance to The Force.

So you see it never says that he will destroy The Sith. But The Sith were the only ones that were causing the major unbalance in The Force not The Dark Jedi. The Jedi Council was skeptical until Qui-Gon Jinn was killed.

Because as you have seen in Star Wars Episode II Attack Of The Clones, it is very hard to kill a Jedi.

That is a good point...I think they just didn't want to accept the fact that the Sith would return. Mtfbwy!

Jadakin- The Sith are the Jedi's biggest enemy so Im sure someone was able to link the prophocy to the sith in some way. Thanks for pointing that out, You are right. The prophocy never said He would destroy the Sith, just bring balance.

But in saying that the prophocy would bring balance and not destoy the sith wouldnt there be some way that in brining balance, the sith would eventually be destroyed. because there can be balance if there is good and evil....?:|

1. The prophecy never say the Sith will be destroyed, they assume.

2. The prophecy never say it was a JEDI who would will bring balance,
confirm by Obi-Wan in EP3 novel

3. Even though the Sith is the greatest enemy of the Jedi,
they have disappeared for 1000 years!!!

Now, not everyone is as old as Yoda, think of this yourself, if i tell you that
Hitler and Nazi (which was only 60 years ago) has returned today, right here
right now, you wont believe it. Not to mention something a thousand years ago.

And, although Ani's count is ultra high, who can say (from the Council's POV)
that tomorrow they wont discover a boy / girl with even higher a count?

good points jedi abba - we dont really know that the prophecy was all about the sith being the imbalance, but i think you can take mace's suprise at the matter to be a clue as to how the jedi were really blind to what was really going on. the jedi werent as all seeing as they strived to be, because they werent paying attention as they should have been. they could have interpreted the prophecy as an imbalance that was yet to be. the fact that QG presented anakin as the chosen one should have given them a clue as to the prophecy was finally coming to be.

i agree

but what is there to bring balance of if their is no sith

i think jedi fell mainly because of their (as people have said before) arrogance

if they find a boy who has no father (as qui gonn was told) and has a very high midichlorian count they should think hes the chosen one, they should take advatange of this coincidence! (contd.)

also,if they just encountered a ''sith'' proclaimed my qui gonn they should train anakin ASAP if they wanna destroy the sith if there is more than one, fullfilling the prophecy

but they didnt ,making qui gonn die, palpatine get full power,CIS start, anakin give in to the dark side, the empire starts, and THE SITH WIN.

if the jedi would have been more open-minded the prophecy would have been fullfilled sometime around attack of the clones!!!
