Let's face it, Episode 7-9 would be the Star Trek Nemesis of Star Wars, and as much as I love Star Wars, we should be looking backwards to
Episode 0 or KOTOR - not forwards. Here's my reasoning...
I totally agree with Lucas when he says Star Wars is done, at least this 6 episode saga that we love. It tells a great story about a father and a son, becoming evil and then redeaming. The path to darkness, and the path to the light. It is a perfect ying-and-yang set of trilogies. There's one remaining over-arching plot line that has been left hanging, as
described here. But, that is better handled by an
Episode 0.
If you love Star Wars plot like me, and can't get enough book/games/comics, then you should realize that everything that happens after ROTJ really cheapens our rock-solid 1-6. We have a good six episodes where we go from good to evil and then evil to good. All the hard work has been put in to realize the chosen one, and he finally redeems himself and brings balance to the force. But wait, Palpatine didn't die? He has god-like powers to just float his spirit over to a clone and start back up again? I'm sorry, I like some of the plot pieces in post ROTJ EU, but this makes me feel like Star Wars would be like Star Trek Nemesis.
Star Trek started to get cheap when suddenly you could go back in time, or regenerate any character practically. So, you lost all connection with those characters, because if they were in danger, you'd know they'd have some wild-eyed scheme to bring them back.
It's my opinion that Lucas would do way better to look back and explore earlier in Yoda's lifetime for something like
Episode 0, or perhaps a trilogy during that time period. KOTOR is another great one, and before KOTOR there was a Jedi vs Sith war! There is so much great stuff in that timeline, it's amazing.
If Lucas wants go ahead with 7-9, then I would suggest he invalidate some of the EU that happened during that time. At the very least, just give Palpatine a "backup clone" that his spirit didn't go into, but was activated and continued where Palps left off. I think it would be better just to change the plot around and bring in some other dark Jedi rising to the new Sith Lord position and bring about a Jedi vs Sith war.
Everyone fears Star Wars becoming Star Trek with all the popularity its getting. Let's face it, Star Trek didn't burn out until it pushed too far, rehashing the same old ideas, and disconnecting the audience from the fate of the characters via stupid stuff with time travel, and not giving any buffer time for people to get hungry again. Star Wars is a much more solid platform to tell a story from, and we have a lot of infrastructure in place to tell amazing stories from the ancient Sith vs Jedi war, to KOTOR era, to the early days of Yoda. Furthermore, we're okay with Star Wars every few years. The true fans will always have the games and books, and the masses will come in for the awesome movies, assuming they keep their high quality, complex story lines, and philosophical references.
