 | Epi-sewed II: Attack of the BFD |
Back when I thought the Holiday Special extravabloganza was going to cover as many major holidays as possible, I got my new friend Admiral thinking. Then, I decided to concentrate my studies on one particular holiday: BFD. (Note: if you are confused at this point about BFD, please read this and this.) He sent me something Halloween-ish, but it fits in perfectly with one BFD tradition I need to share you, with my fellow blogsters.
GFFAers dress up for BFD! It's true, I tells ya! My source is a darn good one and that's what he heard from his cousin's neighbor's best friend's former roommate in Philly who once spent the afternoon with Steve Sansweet's housekeeper. Gotta be true, right?
Anyway, so most of the dressing up (as in our own Halloween tradition) is done by the kiddies. It started out as a Jedi/Rebel pilot kinda thing 10 years or so after the event itself. Kids would pretend to be Luke and Nien Nunb (though sadly his popularity dissipated after just a few short years) and Wedge. It was wonderful. There was even a Ewok baby or two. Then, the kids would start to dress up as Vaders and Palpatines and scout troopers and play the classic "good guys/bad guys" children's chasing games. Beautiful, kids. Beautiful.
The tradition still stands in that galaxy far, far away, as far, far as I know. (Although last I heard it had exploded into a dress-up-as-any-thing-person-droid-you-want event.) So, in honor of BFD...I did a little dressing up myself! See? I went as Ceremonial Leia this year (surprise, surprise). Look at the pretty jewelry! And the hair, of course. And my proudest accomplishment to date: the freakin' awesome belt. Here's the doll I based my costume off of (slightly inaccurate, yes, but I am horrible at drafting my own patterns if I can't see and touch them). I hear PS77 went as a picnicking Padmé this year, though she has plenty of costumes to choose from. PS77 has had some trouble lately convincing her family that she in fact NOT too old for BFD costuming fun...but I'm pretty sure she won't be having too much trouble anymore, courtesy of some K-person. There's this other lady I know who has slaved away in honor of BFD costumes for her children! Thank you, on behalf of BFD costumers everywhere. You are leaving a legacy; a path your children CAN follow.
Though his tale was too lengthy for me to put here (SORRY Admiral! Please don't de-activate me!) I posted it up right here for ya. This guy has some serious writing talent, let me tell you. His account is beautiful and involves blue paint. I highly recommend it. (Admiral- I can't thank you enough for sending me this!!!!!)
Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to someone very special. She has been indispensable in my costuming efforts. Meet my sewing droid, MT2200 (Em). Yes, we had some issues with the upper thread, but I had a nice talk with her and got all that straightened out. No bobbin trouble, even! (Love ya, Em! )
Nobby, I must warn you...I think Em has a little thing for FX-9. Every time he comes up in conversation she gets all flustered and starts spitting oil. We may have a situation on our hands.
And I suppose a costume review is in order as well:
Ceremonial Leia: Done, done, and done!
Senatorial Leia: Working on it. Fabric issues! GAH! I hope to have the collar and hood attached and the pieces for the belt cut & coated by the end of the week.
Bespin Leia: Oh geez...I should have started cutting by now.
Slave Leia: Hehehe, yeah. I have a game plan, but I seriously need to get in shape for this sucker. Shouldn't you all be encouraging me? Who wants to see me in this at C4? It just might have to be replaced with something like
Padmé's Pearl Nightgown: The plans are in order, thanks to PS77!
Tomorrow, another BFD tradition will receive its due. You won't want to miss this, people. Warm up your vocal cords!!
Forcefully,
JP

Great pics, JP!! Someday I will be able to make a costume. May not be acurate at first, but will let you know when i get started. I think Leia's ANH outfit would be a good starter for me. I just want to keep it simple for now.
Look forward to more BFD stuff from you.

Too funny!
I'll have to check out the pics tonight...looking forward to it.

More excellence (and a beautiful dress). How do you even find the time for costuming alongside all your other commitments as a Jedi Princess?
...looking forward to it.
As well you should be!
Seriously, do I get some sort of award for "blirting"? A commemorative plate, perhaps?

You are so incredibly CUTE! Oh to be young again Darling, you have made an amazing Ceremonial gown. It is absolutely stunning, made for a princess, which you certainly do look the part.
I have a game plan, but I seriously need to get in shape for this sucker. Shouldn't you all be encouraging me? Honey, from what I gather from these pics, there's NO NEED!
You are petite as it is! Go on with your bad self Hope I said that right, I'm so out of the loop on new lingos..LOL! Awesome Entry, and thanks for sharing YOURSELF with us.

I still love that gown JP77!! I have materials for it (if I ever get to it ), but am still having problems figuring out the belt. I have an idea of how to go about doing it, but I am not completely sure (of all things...a belt). Oh well...I have plenty of time to figure it out
Bespin Leia: Oh geez...I should have started cutting by now.
I have the same thoughts here!! I really need to get that one started. I may be doing my vest/jacket mock-up next week. I will let you know how it goes
Padmé's Pearl Nightgown: The plans are in order, thanks to PS77!
You're welcome That one was not too bad. Good luck!!

Hmm... and my droid is particularly vulnerable right now, having just emerged from an unhappy and confusing relationship with a Foreman Grill.
Perhaps I should set them up on a deactivated photoreceptor date.
Your costume is fabulous, nice belt too! That looks like a lot of work!

That's why I'm working on that particular one as my 1st solo project. (I had some assistance with the other Leia costumes...) Best of luck with it, v-girl!!
I still want a Leia Bespin outfit!!!
Me too, Hansgirl!! I sure hope I get it done...it's my absolute favorite!
Too funny!
Why thanks, K-guy! You are too kind for writing all those wonderful letters!

I don't think you have reached your full blirtatious potential. Bodacious and I will be the judges of that. And no plate. Commemorative warming jelly, if anything.

still having problems figuring out the belt
That is one area I have conquered! I'm way craftier with things like metal and glue than with fabrics..let me know if I can help at all, my costuming Master.
Perhaps I should set them up on a deactivated photoreceptor date.
FX-9 had better be nice to her, though. She's "fresh oil" as they might say...

How are you set for making me a Gamorrean costume?
Er...can't we do something more fun? Like an Anakin-ish costume? Or something with Corellian bloodstripes?
you look every bit the part
You are too sweet, Brookie! Don't form any opinions until you actually see me, though. (It's not like I'm going to post pics in which I look bad.)
Girly-Wan says she wants your costume!!! Better yet, I'll teach her how to make one!

It was funny, she had shoulder-length hair at the time, so we went to the store and matched brown yarn to her hair to make the buns. I'm sure the clerks thought we were NUTS holding the skeins of yarn up to her head!
I can't remember what the belt looked like......It wasn't anything fancy, though.
Anyway, I'm here, so let the Blirting begin!!!!!

I did a little dressing up myself!
Wow! I knew you sew, but that's stunningly accurate. You're a very authentic seamstress (probably comes from being a fan). How on Coruscant did you manage the belt? This puts most of the costumes I've seen to shame -- including the professional, store-bought ones!
Meet my sewing droid, MT2200 (Em).
*Shakes pylons with Em.* A pleasure to meet the friend of a friend! What do you mean, my seams are showing?
You won't want to miss this, people.
Can hardly bear the anticipation! I've already hijacked a pan of my mother's cookies (should it be cookiees in Star Wars, perhaps?) in preparation for the festivities.

Thanks, ma'am! It took me a day or two of vomiting to realize the comedic potential in that episode, but later I realized just how surreal it had been. Those poor people! Why did I inflict myself upon them? Once again, I plead innocent due to facepaint overdose.

Hmm... and my droid is particularly vulnerable right now, having just emerged from an unhappy and confusing relationship with a Foreman Grill.
Sounds like my relationship with the trash compactor -- absolutely crushing. And then there was the time the Bermuda python got a crush on me. That was such a constricting romance -- I felt like the life was being squeezed out of me; I needed my air, but I just couldn't breathe. It was so difficult to disentangle myself. Those kind of women just chew you up and spit you right back out, you know?

Perhaps I should set them up on a deactivated photoreceptor date.
When my friend and I escaped the laboratory (don't ask), we split up and agreed to find dates before we reconnected in a year. I searched and searched, but couldn't find a willing droidette. Finally, I was forced to admit defeat and rendezvous with my friend in a park.
He was standing next to a blue mailbox and a red fire alarm. I said, "Hey, man, looks like you had more luck than me."
He shrugged off his success. "Ignore these two. The fat one just stands there with her mouth open, and if you touch the redhead, she screams her lungs out."

Put it in your diary - 4th November 2007. But after so much booze-fasting - I'd expect two crates of beer at the finish line!
Seriously, I'm up for it. I'm not in it to win any records, just the satisfaction of completing one of the best marathon courses in the world. I'm also doing it for charity. Next year is the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War, so I'm hoping to raise money for the limbless veterans of that campaign.
