 | A Still Moment in a Galaxy Far, Far Away |
I don't remember what I thought when I first saw this scene from ROTS at the movie theater. After all that was almost 3 years ago. Neither do I remember what I felt at the time, but I have been reflecting on this still for the past 2 months in hopes that this entry will have some significance to me and maybe to others who read it.
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m318/lilliantorres/blog%20challenge/blogchallenge.jpg
What does this scene mean to me, what this scene shows and was it necessary?
We all know the reasons Anakin had to wear that mask but remembering the proverb "no evil deed goes unpunished" other reasons come to mind. As sorry as I feel for him and as much as I understand the reason behind his decision for turning to The Dark Side, after Anakin's treachery against all the beings who believed in him, I say he got what he deserved.
His face hidden from the LIGHT...the same LIGHT that once made him a powerful Jedi.
The lowering of that mask covering his once handsome face signifies the end of his life in that LIGHT and the beginning of a life in DARKNESS. A mask can magnify the wearer's personality and Anakin's disposition after his defeat on Mustafar was rage, shame, pain. The clincher is when he learned of Padme's death which added grief and emotional suffering. All the more reason to be the villain he became following his turn. The Dark Side he wanted...the Dark Side he got, in more ways than one. He was trapped in a dark place, in a dark mask...a constant reminder of his new self. His reward.
How does the scene affect the Saga? Evil people are not pretty. The whole Darth Vader get-up is appropriate, especially the mask and his breathing which made Anakin's role in the The Dark Side credible. The mask gave him the liberty to literally "get away with murder". Few beings in the galaxy knew his real identity and that made it easier for The Dark Side in him to let loose. No face...no conscience...no shame.
In addition, I believe the mask also hid his true feelings which was to his advantage, at least when it came to his dealings with the Emperor. When watching ESB and ROTJ I've often imagined what his face would show about his feelings if he wasn't in that mask.
In the ESB scene when the Emperor tells him " I have no doubt that this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker...He could destroy us" Vader responds " He's just a boy..." Note the tone in his voice. What would his face have shown if it could have been seen?
At the end of ESB after DV tells Luke " I am your father", after the Falcon jumps to light speed with Luke and Leia, something DV didn't expect, we see DV just looking out to space then turning, looking again and walking away never saying a word. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
In ROTJ...the scene on the Death Star where the Emperor tells him: " And now I sense you want to continue your search for young Skywalker". Imagine that irritating voice just grinding on his last nerve. DV turns his head to the Emperor and is silent for a few seconds as if thinking " give it a rest old man".
Also in ROTJ when Luke gives himself up to DV to be taken to the Emperor. After the Troopers take Luke away DV is staring out at the stars. His face could have shown him thinking what AM I doing. He's MY son.
Most faces show emotions. Our faces show when we're in pain, happy, sad, etc. All of these scenes could have been interpreted differently just being able to see DV's face...his true self.
Remember this is just my imagination and my point is while that mask helped transform him to do evil, it also hid any true feelings he had toward the Emperor. Could that be one of the reasons the Emperor never saw his own fate?
What would I have changed in that scene? Nothing could have been changed. Any change would have to have been before Anakin was injured and defeated by Obi-Wan and we know that was not possible.
Padme's words just before her death: "Obi-Wan there is good in him...I know there is still...." The good she knew was there but we would never see until he redeemed himself. All because of that mask.

He was trapped in a dark place, in a dark mask...a constant reminder of his new self. His reward.
I love how you put that, however sad it may be.
What would his face have shown if it could have been seen?
Things could have turned out so differently! Perhaps the Emperor would have seen something in his eyes, a "weakness."
Could that be one of the reasons the Emperor never saw his own fate?
Exactly what I was thinking with the above comment...
A powerful still moment, a well-thought entry. Wonderful job, Lily.

Fascinating stuff, Lily! It's significant that it is in darkness, in the suit, that Anakin is not able or allowed to be himself. For better or for worse, his real self is hidden from the world. Only by encasing Anakin Skywalker's entire person (errr...what was left of it!) was Darth Vader able to...rise.
Good one!!!!

He was trapped in a dark place, in a dark mask...a constant reminder of his new self. His reward.
I believe the Emperor kept him this way intentionally... perhaps better therapies existed for his injuries, but Palpy wanted him to suffer, to feed his rage.... to feed his darkness...
We can all imagine his emotions by the turn of the head, or the tilt of the mask, because we can imagine what he is feeling... but that vision in our heads is enhanced by the "what if" that comes from the MASK...
And the breathing... that was just creepy... has to be the greatest sound effect of all time!

What would his face have shown if it could have been seen?
THAT is the question of the day. As Keanu would say... whoa.
I love your conclusion, that the mask was a crutch which kept him evil. It's no wonder that, as he committed his first act of good in decades, his mask was fried.

Beautiful, lily.
Imagine that irritating voice just grinding on his last nerve. .."give it a rest old man"
Anakin's disposition after his defeat on Mustafar was rage, shame, pain
Absolutely...the face of that mask was a perfect display of what Ani had become inside.

The moment where it shows his surprise of the mask just confused me the first time I saw the movie. He should have seen this coming.

I have settled down to read all of these - and I started with yours
His face hidden from the LIGHT...the same LIGHT that once made him a powerful Jedi. *chills* good one!
Evil people are not pretty Interesting observation. While it is true (as in this case) that evil is usually represented by ugliness, evil people can be cloaked in beautiful visages as well - sort of like the old "wolf in sheep's clothing" adage. But you're right - the Vader image wouldn't have worked as well if that gorgeous Ani were still "himself".

the mask also hid his true feelings Yes! I, like you, have always wanted to try and imagine what Ani's face would actually look like in those scenes. The mask is also a great metaphor for life - don't we all try and hide our true feelings, from time to time?!
Nicely done, Lily! Off to read the others...always on the move

Wonderful stuff, Lily!
I'm glad you pointed out Vaders most poignant moments - the moments when he peers off into space, and we can almost hear his thoughts...
Great start to the day

Oh my gosh, jl! How poignant! Wow!!!
I tried (hopefully successfully ) to ignore, as I read your entry, my own interpretation and feelings of/about how I felt when I watched that mask lowered over Anakin's charred face. I did not want to be clouded by my own point of view.
I never before considered a point of view such as yours, and I must say that your interpretation makes perfect sense to me. Thank you!!!
what AM I doing. He's MY son
I often think this. How could he turn such a cold eye to his own flesh and blood, be so bent on destroying Luke?

This was such a powerful scene...probably one of the most important in the entire saga. You captured it so well!!

Aw, yeeeeeesssssss...The age old theory of 'the man behind the mask'. I, too, wonder what he was really thinking. I tend to think that he survived soooooo long as the Emperor's right hand because he was able to mask his emotions and what he was really thinking. Hiding behind a mask makes it easy to do those things.
Wow Lily, I throw the gauntlet down and you step up to the plate with a great entry!
Wonderful job, my dear friend. Great blog!!

well done!
that made it easier for The Dark Side in him to let loose. No face...no conscience...no shame.
very true; no longer did he have the "Hero of The Galaxy" image to live up to; and his anonymity gave him licence to let loose his darkness.
Great job Lily!
I cant wait to get through all the rest of these blogs, you guys have outdone yourselves!

Interesting thought. . .!
Lily, I am SO impressed! I think you executed the blog challenge brilliantly -- anyone can easily see the time and effort you put in.
You captured everything encompassed by this mask: good & evil; Anakin & Vader; beauty & ugliness; truth & lies.
I loved it! Well done!!!

I just thought -- the Emperor was wearing a mask, too? but kind of in reverse! He had the mask of Chancellor Palpatine and then became his true, twisted self. His ugly evilness could not be undone. . .
See! You've got us all thinking!!

I still have chills from this fabulous, Still Moment I'm in total Awe, my dear
The mask gave him the liberty to literally "get away with murder".
Most definitely! Not just once, mind you, but time and time again it's so sad, what he had become. This once, truly talented, young Jedi Knight, with unbelievable Exceptional Skills, that Stood OUT amongst the rest of his peers.... had fallen to the grips of Darkest of all Temptations; The Consumption of the Dark Side
Bravo, my dear friend
A total Must Read, Wonderful!

Although the "Noooooooo!" that ended that whole scene was a little over the top, I loved that scene. The foundation of the OT that was the prequels was complete. Darth Vader had truly arrived. Great blog.

Totally.. The Mask was the lock on the trap that Anakin was caught in. And it took a lot for hime to break free of it.
Your still is one of the more powerful stills in ROTS, and so awful, cause his eyes are no longer maddened, but Anakins eyes, and as you watch it be lowered onto his face, you can see for a fraction of a sec, that Anakin is terrified and trapped.
Great blog Lily!!
