A Still Moment in a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Please reference this picture.

You might be asking, why would a picture of a computer screen be worth writing about? I'm so glad you asked.

Let's set the stage for this scene. Han, Luke, Chewie, Ben and both droids have just blasted there way into the control room after the Millennium Falcon was pulled into the Death Star by the tractor beam. They are talking about how to get the beam turned off and Ben suggests that R2 plug into the computer. The images begin to flash in rapid succession on the monitor. This image is part of that succession.

This is a pivotal point in the saga. All the characters' lives are about to be changed forever. For some, the change will be for the better, yet for others, the change is disastrous. Let's take a look at the changes.

Ben decides to take care of the tractor beam power on his own and leaves Luke with the droids and Han and Chewie. He says it will be easier for him to turn off the beam power alone then for the whole group to go. Ben tells Luke that he must stay with the droids and that they must be delivered safely or other systems will be destroyed. At first thought, Ben has a good idea about strategy. It would be easier for one person to walk around unseen then for a large group, including a giant Wookie and two droids, to walk around. Splitting up is better for the success of any mission. But looking a little further into the situation, Ben seems to think he's not going to make it back to the ship. Did he "see" his future in the Force? Does he sense Vader's presence on the Death Star? If Ben doesn't sense Vader, it's obvious that Vader sensed Ben. Vader tells Tarken about sensing Ben's presence. He says, "Escape is not his plan." So, what is his plan?

This will be the last time Luke will get a chance to talk to Ben. Luke is now forced to take car of things on his own, even though Han and Chewbacca are still around. I'm sure Luke and the others didn't expect that they were going to be able to stay in the control room for long. Luke's destiny was about to take an exciting turn.

While Luke is trying to figure out what to do after Ben leaves, and tries to convince Han and Chewie to stick around, R2 starts going crazy and beeping for what seems like no reason, until 3PO says the princess is aboard the space station and is scheduled to be terminated. Luke comes up with a dangerous plan for rescuing the princess and has to convince Han to go along with it, using the only thing that Han would have trouble saying no to, the possibility of getting a large reward. Luke, Han and Chewie decide to leave the control room and go rescue the princess, much to 3PO's displeasure.

The situation with Han and Chewie would seem to be much less complicated. After all, they were only providing the transportation. They weren't expecting to be captured. They're only thought would be getting back to the ship and finishing their job so they can get paid. However, Han's greed makes him go along with Luke's plan. So they leave the room and start out to rescue a princess.

I love this scene. It cracks me up every time. Han knows he's being played by Luke, but sooo wants the money that he doesn't care one bit! Luke gets so excited at the thought of rescuing the princess, his voice is going at incredible speeds...then Han slowly enunciates his arguments. :^O Too funny!

Great job pinpointing what motivates each of the characters in this scene!!

You might be asking, why would a picture of a computer screen be worth writing about? I'm so glad you asked.

So what you're really telling us is that this blog is all about LUKE. :^O

I have to admit that I, too, love that scene where they are trying to figure out what the hell they are staring at on the computer screen and what their action plan is. :^O

Fun, fun blog. I so needed it after reading Melinda's blog. Not that anything was wrong with her blog, just that it was a deep-meaningful blog. Ok, I'll quit rambling now. :^O

Great job on your Still Moment!!

Perfect image -- you take a technical moment and expound upon it. Living up to your blog name!

And what I love about the moment is that Han and Chewie THINK it's an easy call for them. They're just in it for the money, after all. But they soon find that this decision changes their lives, forever... and they didn't even see it comin'.

This has to be one of the toughest stills for which to write - at least I know I would have a hard time with it! But you did a great job...! :D

This is a pivotal point in the saga. All the characters' lives are about to be changed forever. I never would have looked at it this way before - so true!

Han's greed makes him go along with Luke's plan

Greed can be a very powerful thing... and one that makes/breaks a movie. ;)

Well done.

Han's greed makes him go along with Luke's plan
Isn't that ironic? That a not-so-positive trait could lead Han to a choice that would tremendously change and broaden his life for the better?

you pulled it outta the fire and wrote one hell of a blog!!
I agree - well done!

gencrs, you've just proved that one always is able to find meaning is one is willing to look beneath the surface. . .and, thus, we never should judge a book by its cover.

So what you're really telling us is that this blog is all about LUKE.

always a good thing! :D

Nice job my friend! I can picture the scene beatifully via your descriptions! And you are right -- the decisions we make (should we go? should we stay?) can affect us forever! Nicely done!

It would be easier for one person to walk around unseen then for a large group,

Yep, especially with all the noise Han seemed to make everywhere he went!

I tell you....how you got this from that "very difficult still" is beyond me. You ARE creative!!!

Great!!

there are soem great "What If" moments in that scene...what if Luke had insisted on going with Ben? What if Han had refused to go rescue Leia?

its also one of Luke's first real "take charge" moments; despite Han being older and more experience, Luke quickly takes control of the situation and formulates his plans and convinces others to follow him....the hallmarks of any good leader.

Great blog my friend, good to see you!

Good blog.

I believe Obi-wan knew he wouldn't see Luke again. He did tell him that his fate lay along a different path than his.

You had to feel bad for Luke too. His uncle and aunt just get murdered, and his new father figure departs despite his desire to accompany him.

Wow!! This truly had to be a difficult still to write about...and you did an excellent job.

This is a pivotal point in the saga. All the characters' lives are about to be changed forever.

So true...and in more ways than anyone could have imagined!!
