 | A Collector's Story-Prologue |
According to my blog page, this is my 9th blog and the first one since the end of July. Man, it's been a long time.
My Star Wars fandom is well-known around work, and I don't hide it. I wear a Star Wars shirt at least once a week and I have Star Wars stuff all over my desk and computer. This year's vacation time was spent with thousands of other Star Wars fans in Los Angeles, CA. My co-workers make fun of me regularly, but I don't mind-it comes with the territory. One of the most commonly asked questions, (beside are you crazy) is if I collect Star Wars items and if so, what do I collect. So this is my answer.
I've been asked numerous times if I collect Star Wars figures and before this year, I would have answered in the negative. My reasoning was it was too expensive to collect every figure that has come out in the last 10 years, which was the beginning of my die-hard fandom. It wasn't because I didn't want to collect all the figures, but I couldn't afford to spend $3 to $4 dollars a pop (now it's $7 to $8 dollars a pop.) When you consider buying two or three figures at a time, you're spending thousands of dollars. So I didn't buy many, although I do have a few that I bought around the time Attack of the Clones came out.
I focused my collecting efforts on other items, such as Master Replicas Force FX sabers and .45 Scale saber hilts. I have a number of Star Wars themed board games as well as different sets of the OT VHS videos. (That's an interesting story that I'll explain later.) For the most part, my collection consisted of random items that I've found on eBay for reasonable prices. The first "complete set" that I obtained was the M&mpire figures.
I mentioned that I didn't collect figures until this year. I started collected the 30th Anniversary figs mainly to get the coins, but I have to figure out what I wanted to do with the figures. I guess I could have sold them on eBay as loose items, but I didn't really want to deal with the eBay seller stuff. I could have given them to my brother for him to sell but I wasn't sure if he still was selling things still. So I kept them. I bought a couple of bookcases for other purposes and decided to use them for Star Wars stuff. So I'll be organizing my Star Wars collection this weekend and will hopefully have it done.
You might be reading this and wondering why I don't have any pictures up. Well, this blog is an intro to my collecting. I am hoping that I will have a new blog done once a week or so that will highlight certain aspects of my ever-growing collection.
Remember, The Force will be with you, Always.

As a collector myself (boy, what an understatement that is! ), I look forward to seeing what you've got and hearing any cool stories about how you came by certain items.

Bring it on, gencrs!!!
So, little by little, you've been adding to your collection. Taking small steps first. Then larger and larger still. You now are one of us (who collect figures ). Can you hear the maniacal laughter?
Okay, I'll return to my Dr. Jekyll persona . . . I'm looking forward to your forthcoming blogs about your ever-growing collection. I like to see what other fans have, mostly for two reasons. I don't collect everything (who can?!), and it gives some hints into each of our personalities. It's rather fun to learn about each other in these more untraditional ways.
Happy Collecting!

My little bro. Love you! I'm excited to see more toy blogs from ya! I feel so fortunate to have met you and even more stoked to become your "big sis" as you one time put it.
I can totallly see you showing off your SW fandom at work too. Perhaps you can use your force powers to get that manager of yours in line or that coworker to answer his dang phone so you wont have to force throw it against the wall. LOL
Much love to you bro... My Gencrs.

I don't collect anything right now...I don't have the time, the money, or the space (that about covers all the necessities of collecting, no?). But it's been fun to see the other bloggers' collections and their stories about how they obtained them. And as JediMelinda said, it also gives an insight into personalities, which is always interesting. I look forward to your future entries about your collection.
Oh yeah, GO CUBBIES!

Well, this blog is an intro to my collecting
Excellent. I love looking at other people's collections, it inspires me to at least think about doing a display room. The thought usually goes away by the end of the day, but hey, maybe one day it will stick.
I have Darth Tater!
I have one too JMW, and a Spud Trooper. They sit on a shelf in my entrance landing and give me cause to smile everyday. Not the most sophisticated on collectibles, but I still love 'em.

hearing any cool stories about how you came by certain items. The VHS story is cool.
Do you have one of the Star Wars spuds? I have all 3, Darth Tater, Spud Trooper, and the R2-D2 edition, but I don't remember what it's called.
I can totallly see you showing off your SW fandom at work too. It's a lot of fun, especially seeing the looks that I get.
Oh yeah, GO CUBBIES! Sorry about that, your cubbies lost to my d'backs.!!!

Not the most sophisticated on collectibles, but I still love 'em. I think the least sophisticated collectables are cool, especially the ones that are designed for young kids. They don't break as easily.
once you start it's hard to stop. I hear you, Lily.

Hey there! I set a limit for myself when I started to get the 30th figs because I knew if I didn't, I'd buy them all and mourn my bank account. And I don't blame you for staying away from selling on ebay, it's a pain.
Looking forward to your future collecting entries.

COOL, gencrs! Looking forward to seeing your stuff.
I collect kids.
I have a very few items myself, and for the most part, they were given to me...which makes them even better...but I find that it is really important that they have places of honor, you know? I want anyone who somes here to know what SW means to me.

ONE OF US...ONE OF US....
Looking very much forward to seeing your collection dude!
funny, MOST collectors START with the figs and work their way up to higher end items; looks like you took the reverse route LOL.
Either way its all good.
and I agree, even with the amount of stuff I get I simply cant bring myself to become a COMPLETIST when it comes to figs, just way too many to keep up with. So I pick & choose the ones that I find the coolest and pass on the rest. Figs can be fun to collect though and if you OPEN them are also great fun to set up and display.

I set a limit for myself when I started to get the 30th figs because I knew if I didn't, I'd buy them all and mourn my bank account. Yeah, I'm already starting to hear my bank account crying, but it's been worth it.
they were given to me...which makes them even better... I think the items that I received as gifts are special because it shows that someone cares and they know what I like.
Figs can be fun to collect though and if you OPEN them are also great fun to set up and display. I like opening the figs because you can change the way they are displayed easier, and they take up ALOT less space. You're my inspiration on that aspect, Deej.

I think it's very interesting to hear about what people collect. There's so much stuff out there, it's so hard to buy it all up!
I mostly stick to the books and comic books. I love reading them and it's not nearly as expensive a habit (because collecting can turn into an addiction) than collecting the figures. I did start out with collecting figures, but this was more a boy who loves toys thing than a collection thing.
Keep up the good work! (and if possible, your bank account too!)
