The Philosophy of Luminara Unduli
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!:D

In CW Volume I, Master Luminara spoke the following:

"The crystal is the heart of the blade.
The heart is the crystal of the Jedi.
The Jedi is the crystal of the force.
The force is the blade of the heart.
All are intertwined.
The crystal...the blade...the Jedi...you are one.
Barriss Offee, your training is complete."

Today I spent a bit of time mulling over what Master Luminara could have possibly meant, and I've determined that these words can be interpreted two different ways: by literal/figurative interpretation, and by analogy.

Literal/Figurative Interpretation

First, I pondered over the dual meanings of the words heart, crystal, and blade. Here's what I came up with:

Heart
The literal heart is life-sustaining. Once the heart is irreparably damaged, death ensues.

The figurative heart can be described as the seat of motivation (whether the motive be good or bad).

Crystal
The literal crystal is pure in its clarity.

The figurative crystal also represents something precious and pure.

Blade
The literal blade is sharp; it pierces.

The figurative blade is also piercing and pervading; it discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Loosely based on Hebrews 4:12)

If taken this way, Master Luminara meant:

The crystal (literal) is the heart (literal) of the blade (literal).
The crystal is what gives the lightsaber its power.

The heart (figurative) is the crystal (figurative) of the Jedi.
The good motives of a Jedi are what make him or her precious.

The Jedi is the crystal (figurative) of the force.
The Jedi is what makes the force pure (as opposed to the Sith, who use it for evil purposes).

The force is the blade (figurative) of the heart (figurative).
The force can pervade the figurative heart, and discern one's motives.

Interpretation by Analogy

The crystal is the heart of the blade.
The crystal is what gives the lightsaber it's energy. Without the crystal, the lightsaber would be useless.

The heart is the crystal of the Jedi.
A Jedi's heart is what gives him or her energy. Without a heart, the Jedi would be useless (or dead).

The Jedi is the crystal of the force.
The Jedi is what gives drive to the force. Without the Jedi, the force would be useless.

The force is the blade of the heart.
Even if a Jedi is unarmed, they can use the force as a weapon. Though it is not a literal blade, it is a weapon which is generated from within.

All are intertwined.
They all work in harmony.

The crystal...the blade...the Jedi...you are one.
The saber's source of power...the weapon itself...the one who gives drive to the force...all are one.

Barriss Offee, your training is complete.
Boy, did Barriss Offee have some serious meditating to do after that lecture!!!?:|

Thanks for joining me, ladies and gentlemen. It's been a pleasure.;)

Luminara has been one of my favorite of the "background" Jedi and I was glad to see the scene you mentioned in the Clone Wars cartoon.

Good insight. Looks like you did a lot of thinkin'!
