Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!
Today I spent a bit of time mulling over the Anakin/Obi Wan conflict in EPIII, and I'm fully convinced that Anakin could have actually kept his 3 remaining limbs. It was only because he was arrogant and headstrong that he lost them in the first place. I believe that a little humility could have saved him alot of pain and aggravation in this instance. Here's my reasoning on this matter:
Yoda sent Obi Wan to battle with Anakin, but Obi Wan didn't want to do it! Remember, he practically begged Yoda: "Send me to kill the Emperor. I will NOT kill Anakin!" But a commission is a commission, and being the loyal Jedi Obi Wan was, he went off to find Anakin against his will.
When they finally came face-to-face, do you recall who made most of the aggressive moves in that battle? It was Anakin! He's the one who came across with the threat: "Don't make me kill you!" He's the one who executed that huge back flip which signaled the beginning of his attack on Obi Wan. He's the one who jumped onto Obi Wan's floatation device as they drifted down the molten Mustafarian river. And then Obi Wan took the high ground...and warned Anakin not to jump.
I'm convinced that if Anakin had heeded Obi Wan's advice at this point, he could've kept his 3 remaining limbs. He could've just continued floating, disembarked elsewhere, and the battle would have been considered a draw. In my humble opinion, it's not like Obi Wan would have chased after him. Why not? Because Obi Wan was emotionally torn and only half-heartedly fulfilling his commission, he was hot and tired from battling in the steamy Mustafarian environment, he was years older than Ani and didn't have his same strength, energy, and midichlorian count, and he also realized he wasn't as gifted in the force as Anakin was. But despite all of this, Obi Wan had experience on his side...which moved him to take the high ground. He'd also worked with Anakin long enough to realize that his wayward ex-apprentice most probably would fiercely attack him despite his warning not to; which is why he was so prepared to adroitly defend himself.
Now what was Ani thinking when he ignored Obi Wan's warning? Well, I recall that Anakin engaged in similarly audacious battle tactics before. Remember the way he dealt with Assaj Ventress in Volume I of the Clone Wars? Assaj had the high ground...far higher than Obi Wan had on Mustafar. Yet he successfully jumped and attacked her without suffering any permanent damage. This may have been what Anakin was referring to when he said, "Don't underestimate my power."
But in this case, it was Anakin who underestimated Obi Wan. He jumped, and Obi Wan, ever fleet of saber, executed a swift, masterful swipe, effectively depriving Ani of his legs and his remaining arm. As Anakin tumbled, limbless, onto the black sand, his eyes glowed a Sithly yellow, and he screamed, "I hate you!" Hated him for what? It was Anakin who refused to follow good advice in this case. It was nobody's fault but his own.
Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize if that seemed like a rant, but I just had to get that out of my system. Thanks for sticking around until the end of this entry.
*love, hugs, and kisses*
