Hello, again!
It's just recently occurred to me that Sith Lords seem to be a lonely type. I will attempt to explain why:
"Perhaps you'll reconsider and help me rule the galaxy for the good of all." - Palpatine to Anakin (ROTS)
"I am more powerful than the Chancellor. I can overthrow him, and together you and I can rule the galaxy." - Anakin to Padme (ROTS)
"Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son." - Vader to Luke (ESB)
"Your hate has made you powerful. Now, fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!" - Sidious to Luke (ROTJ)
Evil partnerships are doomed to fail because the 'friends' in such unions almost always betray each other. Sidious reigned supreme in this respect. He:
- Killed Darth Plagueis the Wise (who was once his master).
- Used Darth Maul and Count Dooku as mere placeholders until he could get his hands on the apprentice he really wanted: Anakin Skywalker. (Taken from the ROTS Visual Dictionary)
- Goaded Anakin into killing Count Dooku.
- Encouraged Luke to kill Darth Vader, and to take his place.
It is interesting to note that almost everywhere the Emperor went, he had someone tagging along behind him, be it one of his Sith apprentices, or even Sly Moore or Mas Amedda. And just look at the way he implored Anakin and Luke to join him. I admit that it could've been a power play. However, in ROTS, when the Emperor proved his mettle by besting the doyen of the Jedi, he still rushed out to the banks of the Mustafarian river in order to save Anakin. Why? Once again, he may have been strategizing. After all, Anakin had even more facility with the force than Sidious did. But in Anakin's susceptible condition, Sidious could've done away with him, thus strengthening his position even further. But he didn't. Why not? Perhaps he was worried about what the future would bring...after all, Anakin was a father, so there was at least one other force-sensitive being who might come looking for Sidious sometime down the line. But I think the
real reason for Sidious's actions was that on a subconscious level, he craved friendship (treacherous, though he was). I guess it's no fun wearing the nefarious crown of diabolical domination alone...even if you
do have the support of countless constituents.
In Anakin's/Vader's case, his wife turned down his offer of galactic domination, and his son rejected him several times in this regard.
Yes, I know the saying: "There are always two: A master and an apprentice." But my question is
why?
If a Sith Lord holds control over a certain territory, why not have
complete domination? Maybe they were concerned with someone being there to take control after their death. But really, as far as I can recall, after a Sith dies, there's no merging with the force. Essentially, there will be nothing left of him. So it's pretty much irrelevant what happens after he dies.
If I were Vader, and I
really wanted to rule the galaxy, I never would've asked for the support or companionship of Padme or Luke (to heck with conjugal love and nepotism). I simply would've overpowered the Emperor and taken sole control. How could Vader feel lonely with such a high midichlorian count? After all, if midichlorians were smart enough to conceive him, they're certainly smart enough to keep him company.
Thanks for sticking around until the end.
Very truly yours,
-Tee
