Star Wars Galactic Phrase Book & Travel Guide is a Fun Little Book - Literally!
One of the gifts I got for Christmas of 2008 was the Star Wars Galactic Phrase Book & Travel Guide. Written by Academy Award-winning sound designer Ben Burtt, this is a guide to the languages created by Ben Burtt for the Star Wars films. In here you'll find brief guides to Pre-Corellian, Bocce (refered to by Owen Lars in A New Hope), Huttese, Ewokese, Shyriiwook (aka Wookie-speak), Droidspeak, Jawaese, the Sand People's language, Gunganese, and Neimodian. As a bonus, Burtt includes a detailed account of how he created some of these languages and many of the sounds heard in the films, including the distinctive sound of lightsabers and R2D2's beeps and whistles. All in all, this is a fun, little book - and I really do mean little! The book is the size of a small travel guide, which adds to the fun. This book is a rare chance to see how a sound designer works and how fictitious languages are created. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in these aspects of film creation. Final rating: **** (on a scale of 0-4 stars).
