Medstar Duology Marvelously Develops Barriss Orfee
Battle Surgeons and Jedi Healer, written by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry, make up the Medstar Duology: two volumes focusing on one of Barriss Offee's assignments during the Clone Wars. These books mark the first time that Reaves and Perry team up. They would later team up for Death Star. (See my review here.)

The books follow a combat medical team assigned to Drongar: a jungle world where battle is waging over a native plant with medicinal properties. This is Barriss Orfee's first solo assignment, without Luminara Undulli along. Along with a sometimes overwhelmed medical staff, the authors add an investigative reporter and a spy from Black Sun to the cast to make things even more interesting. (A few of these characters will later show up in the Coruscant Nights Trilogy and Death Star.) The authors also smoothly make reference to other adventures, specifically Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter (see my review here) and Clone Wars Volume 3: Last Stand on Jabiim (see my review here).

All in all, the books are an intriguing look at what combat medical teams do in war - even if the war does take place "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away." Final rating: **** (on a scale of 0-4 stars).
