Who's Darth Vader?
I had never watched an entire episode of The Apprentice before last night's episode (10 November 2005). No self-respecting fanboy would have allowed himself to miss a television program featuring Star Wars, and I was no exception. I think it safe to say that some fanboys are aware of Ponda Baba but I'm certain that all of us know Darth Vader. That's why last night's episode was so surprising; none of the members of Team Excel seemed to have any experience with that Galaxy Far, Far Away. This entry is not condemnation of their ignorance, though. I mean, not everyone knows who George Washington is either. Frankly, there are merely a handful of characters in the last century of film with whom everyone should be familiar: Charles Foster Kane, Marty McFly, Michael Corleone, Indiana Jones, Stanley Kowalski, and Darth Vader. I've left some names of this list for the sake of brevity (and comedy), but, with all seriousness: who else is there? And these boneheads in Team Excel didn't feature The Chosen One on their in-store display?! That's like forgetting the bread in a sandwhich, or leaving the shark out of Jaws. I hope you'll forgive my exasperation; I'm not sure how else to react. Maybe next time, someone will do their homework. Oh, and by the way, it's back to leaving my Thursday evenings free of television.
