The Comics of Star Wars
I love a good list. In the tradition of The Novels of Star Wars, here is a somewhat complete list of Star Wars Comic TPBs. This will be updated for new releases and corrections, so check on back here from time to time.

I'm just starting out with the Star Wars comics, or rather revisiting them... I havent followed them since the Star Wars Marvel Comic series from the 70s and 80s. Good old Dark Horse has gone and put much of the old, as well as keeping the new in circulation, and compiling almost all of the series to TPB.

In an effort to simplify, I am only listing the TPBs (and some GNs) here, and no Infinities either (even though some of the multi-era TPBs may contain Infinities within them. I did list those here). I wont bother listing era titles here either, as I've exhausted that in the Novels list. Feel free to refer to that if its of interest. Scroll to the end here for further ramblings.

In my Novels list, I referred to the Star Wars New Essential Chronology as the ultimate resource chronology, as well as Star Wars Timeline Gold. For the comics, we now have The Star Wars Comic Companion, of which I have yet to lay my grubby little paws on, but hopefully it will be on its way to my mailbox in the coming weeks.

I think many of you know what the BBY and ABY stand for. If not:

BY = Battle of Yavin, which takes place in Episode IV: A New Hope
BBY = (years) Before the Battle of Yavin
ABY = (years) After the Battle of Yavin

I use the @ symbol to connote the date for upcoming releases.

A few of these are actually graphic novels (GN), which as opposed to the TPBs (trade paperbacks), are not collections of a comic series run. They are stand alone novels.

About the Star Wars films listed above: There are many different comic adaptations of the films, including manga (another subject I didnt include in this list, which goes into Star Wars beyond the films too.. maybe someday I'll get it in here). Suffice it to say that I merely listed the individual episodes here as a reference point to the timeline.

Alrighty! Just like my SW Novel list, I put this together so I could get the story straight for myself, and also to have a priority "shopping list" (so to speak) for myself. Its also handy to have these lists stored on a server, so there are a few more ways to access this if need be.

Q: "So then why dont you just use Dark Horse's online timeline?"

A: "That would be too easy"

Actually and frankly, they way they have the timeline laid out is a little confusing for the stuff I want to see. And by making a list here myself, I actually learn it.

This is by no means a big time collector's reference list of Star Wars obscura. I've seen some of those lists, and they only frusterate me with the knowledge that these things are practically impossible to find. This is the stuff thats out there, for everyone to access, and also the items that are generally withing the main continuity of the EU timeline. Again, as I said above - no infinities or other rare and obscure stuff for the most part.

There are several series that arent put to TPB, though highly worthy (like the new KOTOR series, of which we're waiting on issue #4), I havent figured out how or if they should be incorporated to this list yet. Surely when they do arrive as TPBs, they will be added. For now however, they remain absent - so technically this isn't a complete list, even though Dark Horse has done a n impressive job at compiling most of it.

This is mostly from the timeline provided on the Dark Horse website. There's another great little community over there. I highly recommend surfing around that site for more info on the comics, since they are now the main Star Wars comic publisher. Of course, keep checking in at our very own starwars.com EU comics pages for updates on new releases etc.

Also like my Novel list (and any blog I write), I welcome input from everyone, especially to help keep the list as correct and updated as possible. Like I said above, this will be frequently updated, fixed up and spackled, added to and all that. Eventually, I hope to get a link (either sw.com or publisher) to each title. But I said that about the Novel list and look how far I got with that. A listaholic's work is never done.

I'm not sure of the timeline date for Empire Vol. 5: Allies and Adversaries. I just stuck it up there where I thought it fit. Another one I have yet to put in the list is The Hunt for Aurra Sing, which I know takes place sometime before Episode III, but I'm not sure exactly. The upcoming Honor and Duty is a guess too, since it is only said to have begun before the Clone Wars and runs to Vader's first assignment (you all know what that is!). Surely there will be many more changes and additions to this list.

Yeah - there are a few in this list that are hard to find. That is a ridiculous price, but DH has been coming through with putting some of the TOTJs and other stuff back into print. Hopefully they'll make TOTJ complete and available, sort of like the ATLA series now.

:^O Okay, it might seem neurotic, but there is something so gratifying about lists, and it really helps me literally sort things out ;)

DV - most of the TOTJ books are back in print, and I just heard some more *whispers* that the couple that arent back in print by Dark Horse yet, most likely will be in the next year or so. Dark Horse is really doing a good job of getting everything back in circulation. Just look at the "A long Time Ago" (ALTA) series - those are all the original SW Marvel comics!

I must confess, I'm not real hip to the Star Wars comics, but I did notice one entitled "Darth Maul" that is set just before The Phantom Menace. Does this happen to tell about Darth Maul's infiltration of Black Sun? I've been wanting to read about that. In fact, anything that sheds some light on Darth Maul is interesting to me.

Yes, it does go into that - and in fact it goes along with the Darth Maul novel Saboteur (and the novella Shadow Hunter). Have you read that? Here's the link to DH's page on the DM TPB (heck, while Im at it, I'll edit the link to this list)

Thanks for the link to the DM TPB, that's one I'm going to read. It looks very cool. I know some folks think that Darth Maul is just a minor character, and he may be that, but he's an interesting character to me. JK - I couldn't wait until I got home from leave to research the question you had for me. I've attempted to answer it anyway so here goes:

I would question the placing of Rite of Passage at 28 BBY - it takes place after Twilight as you've rightly placed it, but Twilight should be placed 32-31 BBY, right after Infinity's End, which is missing.

Then, Darkness takes place next (also omitted) at 30 BBY, followed by Rite of Passage.

You're placement of Jango Fett: Open Seasons should also be at 32-31 BBY, right before Outlander. The Jango Fett tpb is a different story and should be placed with Zam Wessel's which is in the right place.

I know I can't play it. But DV does it oh so well, and I like to listen. My sister once started learning on the salmon - she was pretty young, and that was a more managable size. Thanks Rogueish! I was waiting for you to get here :)

I just did a little more research from what you told me (and found out about the upcoming Honor and Duty too!), and had to find a happy medium between what you say and what the DH timeline says. It mostly clicks but there's still a little discrepencey about Twilight. Its difficult b/c the TPBs collect a series that can have a longer timespan. For the most part, everything in my list will begin at the date shown, but may stretch several years beyond. Of course the multi era ones I tried to note at the bottom.

I'll have to continue the research of course. I tweaked my Novel list around alot too. There's a lot of conflicts among the different timelines and sometimes theres not a lot of precision to be had.

I couldnt find an Infinity's End TPB anywhere. Is it collected to a TPB under a different title? Heelp! I got the other omissions in there too now. Plus some new things - Where does The Hunt for Aurra Sing go, and do you know about the right date for Allies and Adversaries?

Mina - Making lists helps me keep it all straight (read my thoughts at the end of the list up there). I did the same thing with making the Novel list (see link at top of my blog). Some of these comics do follow the story in the novels, and I put those in the Novel list (but some other comics still tie in to the novels to some degree). So your confusion is why I put these lists/timelines up to share.

I think you are Dark Spork

No JK, it is not. I too have wished that Infinity's End hit TPB status, but it never did. Rogueish & I are regulars at the DH boards, and we've been told that "Infinity" never really hit the appropriate sales mark at the monthly level to justify a later TPB print run. In DH's math, low sales = slim chance of TPB reprint later.

Having said that, I can say that these TPBs are most definitely out of print right now:

TOTJ: The Freedon Nadd Uprising
TOTJ: Redemption
Empire's End
X-Wing: Requiem for a Rogue

Editor extraoardinaire Randy Stradley has said that all of DH's previous monthly Star Wars comics would eventually see collection in TPB in Ominibus formats in the next few years. So DON'T go bidding on Ebay just yet! (Empire's End TPB sure ain't worth $100, I know 'cause I own it!) I have seen all the other TOTJ volumes on bookshelves, so I know they're out there somewhere. I hear ya rivet head. I cant stand the collector's price they put on something like that. I've some of the out of print YA SW novels at stores, whereas they have a collector's price online for 10-20x the cover price ]:)

I would be interested to see Empire's End. The Dark Empire TPBs are pretty interwoven with the novels, so it would be nice to continue where DE2 left off.

Maybe if enough of a fan base responds, Infinity's End will make it to TPB. Its absence leaves a gaping hole in the early part of the Star Wars series run.

JK, my bad - I forgot that Infinity's End isn't in tpb format - and Rivet-Head's explanation as to why it didn't make the grade fits, it just isn't that good a story, and although it had potential, it's kind of on tangent to the other stories surrounding that part of the timeline. I mean, who wouldn't want a story about Quinlan Vos up against a brood of ##### Dathomir Nightsisters? Then again, the timing of the tale is lame, considering his early popularity when teamed up with Aayla Secura.

As for The Hunt for Aurra Sing, it should be placed immediately prior to Darkness, at 30 BBY.

I want it!

How lame could it be compared to some other things that have made it to TPB? I mean come on! I think the point is more that everything before and after in the Star Wars series is put to TPB, so the absence of IE makes for a big gaping hole.. at least for the completists.

It's not entirely lame - just the timing of it., and I guess the idea of an ancient species who hold the power to destroy the galaxy is not one that I'm a fan of. Anyway, I guess you'll have to try and dig for the individual issues.

I have no interest in the fan-presidency thing... I personally think it's a pointless idea - are they telling me the worthy recipient is going to make a difference, is he or she a better fan than me? I doubt it.

Ha ha! Hi Rogueish. So great to here from you as always. Im flattered you are compelled to comment to me here.

Your pup sounds wonderful (well, as you can probably tell, I have an animal bias, so she could never be a bad thing to me).

Meh, yeah, the "presidency" is so pointless I couldn't ignore how pointless it is, and the irony in its similarity to the imperical theme in SW. How could I not comment on that? LOL.

So you think this fan club presidency might be the culprit in global gas prices soaring sky high? :^O
