The Novels of Star Wars
This is a chronological list of Star Wars Novels. No comics or games, just the books.... well okay, and a few graphic novels. I am including the in-continuity young readers series books, as well as a few graphic novels relevant to the story in other EU books.

2 Good EU references:
- The Star Wars New Essential Chronology*
- Star Wars Timeline Gold

Note: Some of the different eras overlap where an era starts within another era. Also, I have tried to keep series books together even though some books jump ahead and coincide with others on the timeline - those dates are noted (X-Wing series, Jedi Apprentice). Otherwise, if an entry doesnt have a year BBY or ABY after it, it occurs at at the same time or right after the last entry with a date above it.

______________________________________________________________________

BBY = (years) Before the Battle of Yavin
ABY = (years) After the Battle of Yavin
(@ ) = Expected release date
*GN* = Graphic Novel (there's just a few in here)
* = all novellas are in paperback editions only

They contain short and side stories from different periods in the timeline, and include such authors as Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole. I stuck 'em in there after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

Del Rey's Star Wars Timeline

Del Rey's Star Wars home page
- This will link to *most* of the books and a little summary, except for the graphic novels and young readers books of course (I've tried to link the latter to their publisher or other info).

*A good EU primer
If you havent had the pleasure to own or read the Star Wars New Essential Chronology, but would like to get an idea of the EU with a little synapsis of how all the books, comics and games of the EU link together, I highly recommend this article on sw.com (it rocks!): Endnotes for The New Essential Chronology

My endnotes

This will be an ongoing process as new books come out and with the help of other fans to tell me if I've missed anything. I basically wanted to make this list for my own reference, but have seen others who were looking for a "books only list", so I figured I'd go live with it and share the love. If you were looking for this list, enjoy!

Here's my little intro (even though it's at the end) and disclaimer. I have been a complete and total SW film purist until about a month after ROTS was released ( okay! i lied!! ). Now I am an EU noob and spoiler feind (of which you will find none in this blog). My disclaimer is that I still will not be reading any of the film novelizations. Its a film purism thing. Hey - we all have our "thing". Even if I have TESB and ANH novels from when I was a kid... I dont actually remember them.

December 2005 - Well, previously my disclaimer included not reading any books within the film era as well. Now that has changed since Dark Lord was released. I am also indulging in the young readers series Last of the Jedi which coincides with Dark Lord and takes place right after ROTS. I'm sure there will be many more to come, but no film novelizations still - I still feel the same way about those.

I'm also starting to get back into the comics again, which I hadn't paid much attention to since the early 80s. I recently was reunited with my old SW Marvel Comics collection, of which I didnt remember how many I actually had. It starts from #1 and runs somewhere into the 60s, with very few missing issues, and thankfully not too much damage to most of them for being in a cardboard box in a barn attic for 25 years or so. Now, Dark Horse has reprinted that whole series in the form of omnibus style TPBS, called "A long Time Ago...", Of which I hope to collect. Check out my other entry which lists the comics of Star Wars in the same form as this list:

The Comics of Star Wars

I also got lucky and found the first issue of KOTOR recently (they were selling out quick, I got the last copy in the shop), and hope to continue with that series - ah, there's something about a fresh start with a new series.

March, 2006 - LOL @ me above... not a n00b no mo'! I've read a ton of stuff, and have learned so much in relatively short amount of time. I'm actually starting to feel a little more caught up to my friends who have been reading the EU since it really started to get published.

Thanks, JKT

haha! shatterpoint, you got me here before i got cestus deception up.

jedi abba - please come back! you looked at this shortly after shatter point and the list was only half up.

i started by copying my own essential reading list, then for another two hours i added in everything else i could find. at the time of this post here i am somewhat complete, so now everyone give me feedback on what ive missed and if things are in the wrong order at all, wrong timeline dates etc.

the very bottom of the page has two entries, and i dont know authors, timeline dates or anything!

very nice list.. I have looked and realize I have not read nearly enough EU to be happy yet.. I have read 22 of the titles I see here.. maybe a few more than that.. but not many.. though that would include none of the Jr series.. I look forward to using this as my catalogue :x

Hey jkthunder - this list is pretty amazing. I read the Thrawn trilogy which was great but never ventured into anything else after that. Can you suggest 3 good ones to read? I've heard Labrynth of Evil, Ep. III novelization & The Rise of Darth Vader are really good, so something maybe on that level?

yes it seems dark lord is what everyone is waiting for. i havent read LOE (its within the movie era, so taboo for me), but i've heard excellent reviews of it. i think if you see Graham76 or mirax around here they could answer your question better, since as i said i'm still an EU noob.

everyone seems to love the thrawn tril so it may be hard to top that. since that is close to the beginning of the post ROTJ EU, you could continue reading up the timeline, thru jedi acadamy books and so on. if you loved the thrawn tril, then you will probably also like the hand of thrawn duology, also by timothy zahn: specter of the past and visions of the future, but in doing so you would be jumping over a lot of stuff that occurs between that and the thrawn trilogy. it all depends on how much you want to stick with the timeline and read the events as they happen.

just added a few young readers series some with links to save space - jedi quest and boba fett have links to their full list of each book. the last of the jedi books i just listed without a link b/c the publisher listed the title of #2 incorrectly! also, two last of the jedi books are yet to be released.

definitely continue to check back here as i am frequently changing and updating this list!

i am also trying to format this in some way that it could be easier to read, but putting a space between each book makes the list waaay too long!

tales of the bounty hunters is up there Jedioutcast65.65 - in the 'movie era' right after episode V.

paintin - glad if the list is helpful. there are certainly a ton of books after ROTJ and a lot of them deal with luke and leia finding out more about their parents, but its all really spread out in little bits in the books. the recently completed dark nest trilogy (close to the end of list here), has l&l finding out a good amount of info. the bad news is, the whole NJO series is the set up for the dark nest books.

i am SLOWLY chipping away at putting a link to each title. slowly as in once a month or so ive sat down and tried to find the best link to the title (usually either the del rey or sw.com link).

HAPPY READING ALL! BwahahahHAHAhahahaha!!!!!:^O :_|

I've actually read most of the novels. I'm only missing maybe 5-10. If you want any reviews or recommendations, feel free to ask me. But as I'm too poor to invest in Hyperspace, my email address is j_m_palmer@juno.com. I carried a similar list to this in my pocket for years. Now I just keep a list of those I haven't read yet; it's much easier for me. As for the "young readers" books, well, I tried the YJK series and a couple of the JJKs, and I'm not a young reader anymore.

well im no young reader by any means but i have thoroughly enjoyed the jedi apprentice series, and have started the last of the jedi books too - all as an adult. they go with continuity quite well. i dont know about YJK and JJK, since i havent read them - but jude watson's writing is enjoyable for all ages IMO.

LOL - i only included the young readers books that are considered to be acceptable within the main continuity. the galaxy of fear books are total infinities as far as i know, and dont have any film characters for that matter. they are a dozen or so SW kids horror books. if anyone really wants to know, they start in the timeframe of 6 months after ANH - here's a link if interested - http://www.jedinet.com/timeline/timeline.asp?title=gof&nav=178

and more about the order here and young readers books - there are some indiscrepencies as to when the two jedi apprentice special editions actually take place on the timeline. i placed them as best i could here, but i think there are some issues with obiwan's and anakin's ages in those books as to when they actually occur. as far as everything else in my list - again - its to the best of my knowledge. there are some inconsistencies between different timelines, and sometimes i had to choose from the most trustworthy source for the date.

Sweet. Thanks Rex0. I probably wouldn't have seen that error (if we can call it that with this chronology stuff) in a long while, especially since I haven't read much from that era yet, nor do I plan to any time soon. Dammit, one more correction. Darth Maul: Saboteur takes place at least before CoD. The novella claims it is Maul's first mission on his own.

I hate being one of those people. Sorry.

Cool for you (with the PT era) Rex0. I hear great things about the HS Trilogy.

About COD (and dont worry about correcting!) - as you know, there are not only disputes as to when things occur in certain books in the EU, but also some events in one book can jump another book. I've actually rearranged the Darth Maul books and COD a couple of times. The way I have them arranged now are according to the publisher's information. Saboteur is like a flashback I beleive, but I dont have an exact date for it, so I left it with Shadow Hunter where it lives anyway. Make sense??:|

I've just been pointed to this outstanding list of the books (thank you Darth Rex0 ;) ) and I realize I still have a bunch more books to get.

Most everything I have is older so I noticed the majority of stuff to acquire is from the Prequel Era. Sadly though my goal to read them in chronological order isn't going to work that well seeing as how I still have a bunch to acquire but thanks to this outstanding list you put together I know exactly what I need to purchase and be on the look out for :)

Make sense?

Yeah, that make perfect sense.

*rolls eyes*

Just kidding, there is no secure date given I think, but I will check out my book when I get home just to be sure. It sure isn't going to save the world if I figure this out, so I might forget a few times. It may not matter to some poeple, but to me..

No, nothing else matters.

Sorry, I don't know what came over me.

Great List! I have one question though. Are there any novels that deal with Luke going to the DS and with the Emperor's clone, or are they just in the comics? ?:| Thanks again. Blows my list away.

Do you mean DS as in the dark side? The thing with the emperor's clone was only in the Dark Empire comics, and much of the EU after that refers back to that story. I would argue that Luke really went to the dark side so far as he intentionally put up a front. Anyway, this can and is argued to death in the BCAT forum.

I havent read all these books by far, but I can say that Luke does brush with the DS in several others. Dark Empire is just most often referenced. In Truce at Bakura he gets pretty close. Again, I refer you to the BCAT forum on that.

I am soooooo glad you did this!!!!!! I've been looking for a semi-compleat list of the books to see how many I still need to read. So far, I have read exactly 70, only 117 more to go, give or take a few.
