What's a fangirl and fanboy to do while they await the coming Star Wars TV shows? Okay, I've already offered it up this way, but there's this little show that airs on the SciFi channel Sunday nights. It's called Battlestar Galactica, and today Galactica fans received some very frakking good news:
Feb. 13, 2007
SCI FI has renewed Battlestar Galactica for a fourth season, commissioning a minimum of 13 more episodes of "the best show on television." Production will resume this summer with an eye toward a January 2008 season premiere.

Good because since sweeps began a little bit ago, the fate of our beloved crew and skin jobs was on the negotiation table. Not so good because season 3, currently airing, has 6 more episodes left, leaving us poor frakkers with nada for 8 months or more. What's taking them so long? Well, there's a little more to it than the simple fact that such a quality show that has upped the standards for television across the board might take a little time to actually produce. An excerpt from the last news I came across before today:
January 8, 2007
Eick and Moore also confirmed that they are in the midst of developing a 2-hour standalone..."Battlestar Galactica" film, which may be released between Seasons 3 and 4. If there is no Season 4, then the film, which would probably be released on DVD and air on Sci Fi, would not go forward.

So not only do we get our season 4, but a movie to boot. I've been a little skeptical about the notion of straight to DVD movies, as well as movie expansions from TV shows, but hey, the old BSG did it, albeit to limited success. Trek turned rather well with it's movies, although that was done for theatrical release. But what really has me intrigued and hopeful about it is in how innovative the producers of the new BSG have been with the show so far. They really have changed the face of television. It's a unique market right now, but the maker himself (I mean George Lucas of course) has turned his attention to the realm of television media.
There's still the
proposed Caprica series to possibly look forward to as well. When i first heard news of a possible movie, I wondered if it might cover this time period, but apparently not.
More info.
So what to do while we wait for BSG 4, the movie, and Star Wars TV? Have a frak party! This will give all you late starters plenty of time to catch up. I know I'll be watching the previous seasons again, since the whole frakking series is so interconnected. It's packed with details and tie-ins, similar to our GFFA. I just hope this time around they won't wait until 3 weeks before the January 2008 premiere to release season 3 on DVD.
I had a whole bunch o' stuff to say about why this show appeals to me so much, especially concerning the "reimagined" Starbuck and how her (Yes, I said "her"... hope that's not a huge spoiler for anyone) character has moved forward the concept of the female protagonist/hero by a zillion steps, a role that has been stagnant since at least Victorian times. Yes, this show brings us back to the roots of "story" derived from mythology, yet in a whole new way. This is one of the major factors that has made the Star Wars saga so universal...
But I wasn't going to talk about that now, as I've already used a considerable amount of blog space on a
previous BSG rant.
Instead, I leave you with this catchy tune to inspire:
A New Crew in Town
And who can deny the awesomeness of this prospect:
