Today on starwars.com
A few hours ago Lucas Arts finally revealed it's big secret project with BioWare that was rumored to be KOTOR 3. More recently, word got out that it would be KOTOR as an MMORPG, which let down a lot of console gamers who were also avid fans of KOTOR I and II.
I followed a live blog from the press event over at
1up.com, with hopes that we would get some information on what kind of development this was gearing towards. In the Q&A following the main presentation, the question was asked as to whether it would be made for consoles, and the reply was that they were only talking about PC "... today", which sounds hopeful to me that there will be a future release for at least the Xbox 360. Or maybe by that time, it will be for the Xbox 720 or 1080
There is no release date yet, and from the sound of it the developers are working their way towards revolutionizing the MMORPG. This is not KOTOR 3 people, as it is not a continuation of the stories from the first two KOTOR games, nor is it the same kind of gameplay.
Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place 300 years after KOTOR 2, which I believe is about 3600 years before the film era, and if any characters from the KOTOR games show up in it, they will have to have weathered three centuries (which isn't so far fetched in the Star Wars Universe).
I haven't been much of a PC gamer since the days of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. Being primarily a Mac user and console gamer leaves me little time, desire, and choice. That being said, I'm glad this isn't actually "KOTOR 3", and if there is any development for the console, perhaps it will have a condensed story that can continue the KOTOR saga and have extended online play, yet not necessarily as an MMO. I'd love to see JJ Miller's KOTOR get worked into that, or how about Darth Bane! Alas, both of those also have hundreds of years between them, the KOTOR games, and TOR.
Sweet video with BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk talking about the game.
