"Star Wars: The Old Republic" Announced
Today on starwars.com

A few hours ago Lucas Arts finally revealed it's big secret project with BioWare that was rumored to be KOTOR 3. More recently, word got out that it would be KOTOR as an MMORPG, which let down a lot of console gamers who were also avid fans of KOTOR I and II.

I followed a live blog from the press event over at 1up.com, with hopes that we would get some information on what kind of development this was gearing towards. In the Q&A following the main presentation, the question was asked as to whether it would be made for consoles, and the reply was that they were only talking about PC "... today", which sounds hopeful to me that there will be a future release for at least the Xbox 360. Or maybe by that time, it will be for the Xbox 720 or 1080 :p

There is no release date yet, and from the sound of it the developers are working their way towards revolutionizing the MMORPG. This is not KOTOR 3 people, as it is not a continuation of the stories from the first two KOTOR games, nor is it the same kind of gameplay. Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place 300 years after KOTOR 2, which I believe is about 3600 years before the film era, and if any characters from the KOTOR games show up in it, they will have to have weathered three centuries (which isn't so far fetched in the Star Wars Universe).

I haven't been much of a PC gamer since the days of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. Being primarily a Mac user and console gamer leaves me little time, desire, and choice. That being said, I'm glad this isn't actually "KOTOR 3", and if there is any development for the console, perhaps it will have a condensed story that can continue the KOTOR saga and have extended online play, yet not necessarily as an MMO. I'd love to see JJ Miller's KOTOR get worked into that, or how about Darth Bane! Alas, both of those also have hundreds of years between them, the KOTOR games, and TOR.

Sweet video with BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk talking about the game.

Well, I'm not really thrilled to hear that it's PC only. I have no games at all for the PC and really don't think I could get used to it. I agree with you in that I'm glad that it's not KOTOR 3. But I'm sure this is great news for PC users!

NOOO!!! I sure wish it was KOTOR III, but this is alright, I suppose.

Well, even if it's not KOTOR 3, they'll have a chance to respectfully wrap up the plotlines from KOTOR 1 and 2. So...

"After Malak was gone, Revan disappeared, never to be heard from again."
"When Darth Traya was defeated, the Exile followed the clues into deep space, where she also, was never heard from again."

...Well at least I'm sure we're getting a really awesome looking game! I mean, Bioware just did Mass Effect and it was...

*views screenshots*

...The lightsaber hilts are four times larger than they should be and everything looks like a Japanese cartoon.

Frak.

"Being primarily a Mac user ... leaves me little ... choice"

If it's an Intel-based Mac, you could always Bootcamp it.

Cool! Hopefully this will make up for the debacle that was SW Galaxies.
Of course, I'll have no time to play this - so my joy is short lived. There. It's gone.
In the interim, perhaps bioware could release a mini-game; Star wars - The Old Republican, where we get to play as John McCain, customizable Depends and all.

I'm pretty sure the graphics are still in a rough sketch phase, and I had heard them talking somewhere about trying to work on the graphics so they weren't too "cartooney", but yeah - at this point they don't look like something most MMO players would really be too enthusiastic about - that coming from a non-MMO person.

Wait... Rive?!?:O

Bootcamp or Parellels... bah. I still have a PC, just not one that's good enough for modern games. Mine Sweeper still is teh rulez tho :D

utf19 - Don't give up hope for *something* on consoles!

I sure wish it was KOTOR III, but this is alright, I suppose.

Characters like Rive mentioned could certainly appear, but being that this is an MMO, there probably won't be one tight story that everyone will experience - but we'll just have to see where BioWare takes this.

nob - They said something about SWG in there, and how they've learned their lessons from it. I can't even imagine how I would start to play a game like this either - bigger than all BioWare games (and expansions) put together? My attention span doesn't last that long :p

:^O

That scares me a little bit

So far it looks great!! But, they really don't have much content out, so we'll wait and see. But based on what I've seen, I can't wait.

Well, I have never played an MMO in my life... mainly because I have a life. But then again, KOTOR was the first RPG I ever played. I had to. It's freakin' Star Wars!

What I think is really funny about this PC only situation is that I was kind of mad Force Unleashed isn't getting a PC release. Now the opposite has happened... :^O

Yea, but the final product is a long way off yet. They will most likely fix the graphics.

Apparently they've been developing this since 2005, they might still - but I'm worried they've done too much to make a serious graphics change now.

Bootcamp or Parallels

Bootcamp. Bootcamp. Bootcamp. Bootcamp.

And just to make sure you heard me: Bootcamp.

Bootcamp lets you boot your Mac as a Windows computer. Parallels runs a little emulated Windows machine inside of your Mac operating system. This is much, much, much slower and not a good idea for playing games (and most new ones won't even run in Parallels since Parallels doesn't support Direct X9).

Well, if anybody can make a good MMO it's Bioware, but I doubt it. I don't pay monthly to play PC games either. Oh well.

Bootcamp

Don't have an Intel, so Parallels would be my only option anyway... if I were even considering it. Someday I may upgrade the old PC though ;)

I don't pay monthly to play PC games either

That, plus time, plus platform, would be another reason I probably will only get to see youtube clips of this game... unless a console version gets developed :D

so we'll wait and see

A looong time.

[TFU] isn't getting a PC release. Now the opposite

I don't play any modern PC games at all. i'm a console guy who still hasn't gotten an Xbox360 or a PS3 yet lmao.

I play SNES emulated games on the PC and laptop though as well as MAME. The SW arcade games were a hoot back in the 80s.

This announcement thrills me. For once, the fevered fan speculation was correct! Now, let's just hope the controls are more manageable than Galaxy's.

I'd love to see JJ Miller's KOTOR get worked into that, or how about Darth Bane! Alas, both of those also have hundreds of years between them, the KOTOR games, and TOR.

Implausible, maybe, but it would be awesome.
