 | Back to school, Zombie Prom and Insider #84... |
Before I jump into full-on self promo blog mode I want to thank the Incredible Hulk for running (or rather ruining) things in my studio including the chore of posting on this blog while I was away in Chicago for Wizard World a few weeks back. Luckily, his alter ego Dr. Bruce Banner showed up too and put things back in order before I returned. Though it seems the Hulk was pretty popular in the blog comments last entry so I guess for better or worse things were a success, so thank you my big green friend.
I hit the ground running as soon as I got back from the Chicago convention so I didn't get a chance to post a con wrap-up report like I did for San Diego. Doing both shows back to back this year almost killed me, or at least my work schedule anyway, since I like to think I still have some endurance left even though I turned 32 last month. Basically, I had a great time, stayed out way too late every night with friends and had fun sketching for fans and selling artwork. I skipped Chicago last year for the first time in like seven years because I was busy trying to make my deadline for Dark Horse Comics' Star Wars Empire series at the time. This year I forced myself to go, even though I had reservations about how successful the show would be or if I should just cut my losses and get more work done that weekend in my studio. But I'm glad I went since I picked up a few new important contacts and possibly some really cool work doing concept art for a feature film project coming up. I don't want to talk about it just yet for fear of invoking the whammy but if it goes through it'll be a great opportunity to make some good money and get my name and art more exposure in Hollywood cirlces I suppose.
I'm already illustrating for another film project, creating comic book art cut scenes for a horror/comedy/musical called Zombie Prom. It's being produced by horror maestro Wes Craven with special make-up effects by Stan "The Man" Winston (Terminator, T2, Aliens, Predator, Jurassic Park, Pumpkinhead and just about every other cool genre movie that mattered including the Star Wars Holiday Special!).
The film will be playing at the Sundance Film Festival coming up. It's bascially Little Shop of Horrors meets Grease with a little Rocky Horror Picture Show thrown in. The director showed me and a few of the other artists who are working on the project the completed film (with temp comic art) while in San Diego this summer and it was really funny and entertaining. I'm really excited to be a part of this project.
All of the following stuff along with Zombie Prom has kept me on my toes ever since I got back from Wizard World-
I'm currently working on a new sketch card project for Star Trek (the other white meat). That project is due in late September. I'm illustrating a cover for IDW's new Angel series, that piece is due in two weeks and I recently did a fill-in page of pencils for their upcoming Saw: The Rebirth comic which will tie into the Saw II horror movie sequel coming out this Octobter. Komikwerks has me illustrating a children's action-scifi-adventure book called ThunderRiders which should come out later this year.
And I just wrapped my latest Star Wars artwork for Insider #84. There are a number of pieces I'm really happy with in this batch of art featuring Emperor Palpatine, a handful of Jedi (including one of my personal favorite Jedi characters) and a Republic Senator too I was working with Dan Wallace and Pablo Hidalgo on this feature so I think everyone will like it since those guys never disappoint the fans.
I'm still really hoping to draw more Star Wars for Dark Horse Comics soon but I think they are booked up with writer/artist teams for the first half of next year on all of their new series. So I'll just cross my fingers and hope they need another fill-in artist for a story soon. If I had my druthers I'd only ever draw Star Wars comics since that is my true love in life but there are so many talented artists in Dark Horse's stable already - Jan Duursema, Doug Wheatley, Brandon Badeaux, Brian Ching. These storytellers are the real deal and you can't really ask for any better when it comes to spending your hard earned cash on SW comics. I'm really looking forward to all of the new series they're working on which debut in 2006.
In the meantime, I'll just hope for more work from Star Wars Insider since I have some new projects with SW author Abel Pena that we really want to work on if they get approved by editorial. I'll keep everyone posted on my upcoming projects here and on my official website .
I start teaching the Comic Book Illustration course at the Columbus College of Art and Design next week. I've been teaching this class both Fall and Spring semesters (with a few summer sessions thrown in) since 1998 and I'm looking forward to the class starting up again. I like teaching how to draw comic books since it keeps my own skills sharp. Often artists don't get to verbalize what they exactly do when they are creating art, usually we just run on instinct and what feels right or looks good. But explaining the process, the techniques, just vocalizing it allows me to comprehend the process better myself, it makes me more aware of what it is I'm doing so I can do it right more often. Plus it's fun to be creative around other artists, interacting with them and feeding off of that positive energy (even if they do need a little discipline and a kick in the pants to get their work turned in on schedule) since making a living as a freelance illustrator can be somewhat isolated existence. Still, I like being my own boss and getting to draw Star Wars all of the time so I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world
I hope everyone had a great summer and good luck for those of you heading back to school! Be nice to your teachers...

Well, I'm glad you made it to Chicago this year, otherwise I never would've been able to say "I stared deep into the thoughtful eyes of Joe Corroney."
It's too bad these Star Wars blogs won't let us post our own pics yet -- I'd post that Boba Fett sketch you did for me. Ahh well, here's a link instead: grantgould.com/swsketchbook.html
Talk to ya later, man --

Any idea which issue of Angel your cover will be gracing?
Glad to hear you'll be splashing ink around Insider again. I still harken back to the days when every issue was guaranteed at least a Corroney Holonet feature. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the other ideas you are pitching with Abel, your collaborations thus far have been outstanding.
So, if RojoTrooper gets you on board for a zombie SW film, I want to offer my services as an extra bloated corpse. I can inflate my already substantial gut better than an Amargosa toad. Hoorah!

Vader commands his shuttle to land on a Former Separatist held planet Snoyarc.. To investigate the disappearance of his elite squad that is a mix of Elite ARC Troopers and shock troopers..
As the craft descends.. he sees abandoned at-rts, crashed speedbikes..
As Vader walks out to survey the damaged equipment.... a lone speederbike roars past him..
then from the trees emerge a whole mixed squadron of battle damaged clone troopers, battle droids, and mutalated humanoids.. firing thermal denators, blaster fire, and heavy fire.. at the trooper... and then the fire converges on Vader and his shuttle..
Hmm..
sounds good..

Howdy Joe!
I'm glad to see that you have a lot to do, and you have made connections. That, as I'm sure you know is the way to get places (hard work helps too, but not as much as 'knowing someone'). The Hulk was rather pleasant to speak with, although he did have this hang up with stretchy pants!
BTW - Happy Be-Lated Birthday! The Red Bull is on me!!

Grant Gould... (in my best Jabba voice) ho, ho, ho, this sketch card artist is my kind of scum!
Deep, thoughtful eyes? My sister used to tell me when I was growing up the reason my eyes were so brown was because I was full of... poodu.
Glad you liked your free Boba sketch Now beat it ya bum!
(Just joking, you know I'm madly in love with you and will keep stalking you online forever and ever!)

Hey RojoTrooper, can I be in your zombie SW fan film too? Actually, if anybody has footage of me on Sunday at Celebration III you can just use that and insert me digitally into your movie. I think I got barely two hours of sleep the night (morning) before. Note to self - Do not go out drinking at another Star Wars convention with both Quinlan Vos and Jan Duursema...

Hey Boneman! Not sure about ink but I'm definitely splashing around pencil for Insider #84
I actually have been going straight from pencils to digital color more often lately (doing that kind of work for Dark Horse has spoiled me now). I'm still inking some other projects occasionally but working in full color for myself has allowed me to see the light and take shortcuts without hopefully losing too much of my usual style.
I'm not sure which issue my Angel cover will be for yet, IDW hasn't told me. They wanted something all purpose from me that they could plug into the series anywhere I believe.
Abel Pena is the man.

Hey Jedi Master Scully, thanks for the support. I agree that in this business it's equal parts hard work and skill and about who you know. Doing research and being in the right place at the right time can go a looooong way (especially for a hack like me).
I have to confess, the jolly green giant and I both share an affinity for purple stretchy pants. We're a lot alike that regard, especially when I get angry and can't form complete sentences. Thanks for the birthday wish and the Red Bull (Hulk get jealous)! Now if I could only take you up on that drink somehow...

Like I said before. . . .I'll be in Dallas in October [url=http://scifiexpo.com]
No wonder I would always eat my veggies as a child, I never thought it might have been because of the purple stretchy pants!! Thanks for solving that mystery.
I need to confess something - I CAN'T draw, even my smiley faces suck! So I do feel a bit out of place when I see all the things ya'll draw, I feel so inferior and wonder what I'm doing talking to such gifted people. Then I realize it's the stretchy pants and that ya'll are just funny - even just to read. But everything I see is so amazing! And I loved your Boba Fett.
I'll be 32 in February

Opps, the URL didn't come through right.
It's www.scifiexpo.com
I'm excited cause Carrie Fisher will be there (yes, she has and will always be my favorite character)! Okay, time to go home now, I have played long enough here at work.

32's not so bad... I'm just getting used to it setting in I think. 30, or even 31 was harder for some reason. At least I'm not 20 again. I mean 19, you're still a teenager, 21 you're an adult. What the heck is 20??? Where am I going with this? I don't know...
I'd love to check out Sci-fi Expo sometime. The programmers for the show) even invited me one year but on my own dime. I'm just a starving artist and can only afford to travel so often since Comic-Con takes a big chunk out of my account each year. If they comped me I'd be there for sure. I hear lots of great things about that show.
Don't worry about not being able to draw, there's too many things to list that I'm not so good at. We're just glad you're here

I believe Zombie Prom is playing at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2006. Though the director, Vince Marcello, might be planning to premiere it elsewhere before that. if it garners major studio interest like they are hoping then they plan to expand the short film into a full length feature. If that happens I've been promised to be brought on board along with my pal and art director for the project, comic book artist Tom Mandrake, to work on it further. Wish us luck!

Life so sucked for me when I turned 30, I cried for months! This is really the first place that I have ever admitted to being almost 32, and since I can pass for anything from 22 to 27 I really use that to my advantage.
I to am broke! My weakness for DVD's and SW books keeps me that way and my trips to places like this. But when I become extremely wealthy I will be taking applications to help starving artists.
Best of Luck on the film. . . .can I be "dead extra #2"?

It doesn't get me anything, but people just think I'm younger than I am, and I just don't argue!!

I cried for months too.. when no one was looking At least I certainly don't behave like I should be in my thirties. My students can attest to that since we usually talk about comic books (natch), video games and movies for the entire three hour class while we draw. Sometimes we're having so much fun I forget I'm the teacher.
There's so many new SW books coming out this fall too - Prequel Chronicles, Ultimate Visual Dicitionary, Locations of Ep I-VI, Trisha Biggar's Dressing a Galaxy, John Knoll's 365 book, SW Poster book... That's like $400 right there... can someone give a SW artist the LFL discount... and a table dance?

By the way, when you become extremely wealthy I'll gladly accept any donations to the Joe Corroney Starving Artist fund. Maybe by that time there will be a Zombie Prom sequel in which case you can be dead (or even undead) extra #1!

My theory is that Gen Xers are redefining what people used to think - about everything!!
I know I don't act my age, but sometimes I feel as old as my parents.
I loved my professors that would talk about other things besides the subject at hand! The strange thing, I retained so much more information about the class than from the profs that just lectured.
Please don't tell me that, I just spend $70 on SW books yesterday! I think I need a LFL discount too - no table dance needed, but thanks!! (I'll pick up the drink tab though).
WooHoo - Undead Extra #1!! That will move my name up in the credits to the "Also Starring" section!!

I was circulating through the artist alley at C3.. So I may have some footage
I did see you at SDCC.. I didn't make it back for the 3 for 25 print special..
I had to catch the plane back to Houston.
And yes.. You can be the Special Ops Trooper.. "Look Sir, Zombies"..
Thanks,

The book delima is pretty severe the rest of this year. Keep an eye out for the online deals though. If you pre-order the Prequel Chronicles book from Amazon.com you can get it for $94, plus free shipping!! That's saving a bundle (and I need to get around to doing soon). It's only $87 pre-order at Walmart.com, but with shipping added, the other works out as a better deal.

I'd take him up on his offer JMScully. For my money, Joe's Vader is at the top of the list. If you don't mind my asking, are you thinking of a head shot (or helmet shot as the case may be) or more of a full action pose?

THANKS, I will!
You see I have this one tattoo that I need covered (something stupid when I was 18), and it has a lot of dark lines, so I have to have something dark to make sure it's covered. I was thinking about a SMALL but full size Vader, and he has to have the lightsaber. That is just a MUST HAVE!! Maybe a little action, I don't know just yet. . . .but I will know what I want when I see it.
