Jedi Vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force and Mid-Ohio-Con wrap up with photos
Jedi Vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force published by Del Rey, written by Ryder Windham and illustrated by my pal Chris Trevas and fellow Star Wars artist Tommy Lee Edwards, has just been released and if you're a Star Wars art fan or Expanded Universe aficionado you just *have* to pick it up. It's gorgeous from cover to cover featuring a ton of beautiful full color illustrations within. It's also one of the best EG's I've seen and read to date.

Here's another reason to check it out - Chris illustrated my Expanded Universe Jedi character, Kai Justiss aka our good friend and fellow Star Wars artist Justin Chung of World Famous Comics.com, on page 16 in the introduction. You'll see the heroic Jedi Knight/artist/webmaster in an "intense" dialogue scene with Jedi Master Jocasta Nu in the Jedi Archives. Seriously, it really is a sweet illustration.

Also, there are two scenes of our pal Doug Wangler as Quinlan Vos who modeled for Chris' illustrations which turned out great too. Justin actually makes a second appearance in the book as the model stand-in for Jedi Master Tholme with Vos on page 75. Along with this second Quinlan Vos scene, I also helped Chris with the direction for the reference photography for the Mara Jade funeral scene illustration as well on page 46. We shot the reference photographs of Shannon McRandle as Mara at Celebration Europe earlier this year.

There are some other really cool EU tidbits (like young Jedi Master Dooku and his original lightsaber) in the book but I don't want to give too much away in case Chris wants to mention it in his blog.

I tip my hat to everyone involved - Chris, Tom, Ryder, LFL and Del Rey (and Justin, Doug and Shannon). This book is an incredible piece of work gang. Great work!

Mid-Ohio-Con 2007 has come and gone and I want to thank the fans, my friends and my fellow 501st, Rebel Legion and Ohio Star Wars Collectors Club members for making it a really memorable experience. If you're curious I posted some pictures from the event in my new Myspace album right here.

The highlight of the event for me was participating on the Star Wars discussion panel towards the end of the day on Sunday. The panel featured friends and fellow Star Wars contributors Jan Duursema, Dave Dorman, Doug Wangler, Marc Wolfe and panel moderator Justin Chung. A crowded room full of Star Wars fans were enthusiastic and asked questions for us as the panel ran past it's allotted time. We had a really good time :)

You can also check out pictures from the panel in my Myspace album right here.

Thanks again for everyone who turned out for the event and I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Happy Holidays,
~J

Hints? I outright demanded that it be given to me, and I don't care who does it! (they will, of course, likely be warmly regarded as the giver of the Best Gift of the Year) I've been trying my hardest not to spoil it for myself whenever I go to the bookstore, but I can't help but sneak a peek each time!

One of the best EU books to come along! Man, this book is an excellent read and should be read by every Star Wars fan!!!! The illustrations are marvelous, as is the set-up of the text (and all of these timeline-notations!!!) A shame it did not also come out in hardcover (just as with the release of the New Essential Chronology)...

Hey Joe - Thanks for the plug!
It was great to include Kai Justiss in the book.
Also again thanks for the introduction to Lisa and Alex.
(Note to fans - Rebel Legion member Lisa, seen in Joe's Mid Ohio Con pics as Endor Leia, was the model for Leia in the torture scene with Darth Vader on page 120).

Yeah - judging by the previews, this is going to be a sweet book indeed. Thanks for the heads up Joe.
That discussion panel sounds like it would have been a blast!

This EG is really neat. It contains a bit too much post RotJ stuff for my taste but the illustrations are beautiful and the stories are made interesting by writing everything in the 'inside universe' style.

Hi there mate, the book sounds amazing and I'll be getting it for sure. Need to catch up on my Essential Guides, so this is a great starting place,
How cool that you shot the gorgeous Shannons reference photo's at CE. I bumped into her twice that weekend. Once at the Novotel when we all had that San Miguel drinking session and again in the ladies toilets.
Yep, you heard that right, Me and Chris 'Rojo Trooper' Gereke kind of got mesmerised and instead of following the signs back to the main hall we kind of latched onto Shannon and just followed in a trance.
Ahhh, those were the daze...

And Lisa Scharf was also my Princess Leia model for my Celebration IV/Europe artwork earlier this year too :)

Hey Mark! It was great meeting you finally and hanging with you at Celebration Europe. Glad to hear you had such a memorable time, I think we all did ;) Actually, Chris shot the reference photos. I just helped coordinate the shoot and helped with the poses since Shannon is a friend of mine. But it was fun because she was teasing me the whole time and I'm an easy target.

While I'm sure the text is great, it was the beautiful color artwork that convinced me to buy this book. I tip my hat to those involved.
