The year started out with
Clone Wars news... we were introduced to
Ahsoka Tano, who serves as the show's token mullet.
Shortly afterwards, an
announcement was made that the series would air on Cartoon Network as well as TNT. It never made it to TNT -- and thank goodness, 'cause I don't know what I'd do without that extra hour of
Law & Order.
On the big screen, the release of
Fanboys was delayed
multiple times... thankfully, there's nobody dying of cancer waiting to see
this movie.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out in May, and online reviews were very mixed. In fact, fans haven't been this divided since the last time any movie was ever released into theaters.
Some of the most
scathing reviews came from Lucasfilm's own Pablo Hidalgo... apparently,
Indy IV wasn't as subtle and sophisticated as last year's
Transformers.
Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett played a KGB agent in the movie... her Russian accent was so convincing that I kept thinking she was looking for moose und sqvirrel.
A few months later, Harrison Ford
said that the next Indiana Jones movie is "still in the primary stages." Call me an optimist, but I've already marked my calendar for Memorial Day, 2027!
And IndianaJonesShop.com started selling a
Fertility Idol Pencil Cup. Ironically, this will never, ever get you laid.
This year was also the 30th anniversary of the "
Star Wars Holiday Special," the only TV show in history which managed to be both non-denominational and universally offensive.
Elsewhere on television, a
Star Wars fan's wife came face to face with
Dr. Phil... after an hour with the TV personality, she realized that her husband could be much, much worse.
A
"Mandalorian Wedding" took place at the San Diego Comic-Con... just as quickly, Californians passed a constitutional amendment to prevent this from ever happening again.
Also in July, fans near Tokyo were treated to Celebration Japan...
Peter Mayhew and David Prowse both attended, where they hosted such panels as "How the hell are we supposed to sleep in those tiny hotel beds?"
Unfortunately, Carrie Fisher
bowed out at the last minute... she was apparently furious that nobody told her those high autograph fees were in yen.
But Ms. Fisher did appear on the game show
Deal or No Deal, where she promptly offered a snack to Howie Mandel and told him not to be afraid of her hat.
November 4th was a momentous day... for the first time in our nation's history, I chose not to buy the newest
Star Wars DVD release.
Of course, that was also the day Barack Obama was elected President! Obama received a key
endorsement from George Lucas, who was has long been a proponent of change. Remember when he changed Darth Vader into an annoying nine year-old?
On Veteran's Day, a comedy club in Michigan held a Comedy
Roast of Darth Vader, which begs the question: wasn't he already roasted?
That same day, the
Clone Wars movie came out on DVD, and different retailers had
special promotions: Best Buy offered exclusive tin packaging, Target had free comic books, and Circuit City gave away pink slips.
In other collecting news, the
Star Wars: Frames book set
cost between four and five THOUSAND dollars... or, for the same price, you can buy a 58-inch flatscreen and watch the images magically come to life!
For a bit less, a new line of Artoo
Shampoo Dispensers was revealed online. It had millions of fanboys wondering -- what's shampoo?
Finally,
Billy Dee Williams and
Samuel L. Jackson were named two of Ebony Magazine's "25 Coolest Brothers of All Time." George Lucas failed to make the list, despite his
best efforts.
