Nonfiction at the Presidio
Hello again,
Well, here we are at the Presidio, after years of anticipation. I have a view of the bay--well, a strip of it anyway--and there's a great corridor filled with ILM matte paintings. The food is good and there's plenty to explore. Moreover, all the DVD tie-in books are done and coming in--John Knoll's Creating the Worlds of Star Wars, Trisha Biggar's Dressing a Galaxy, The Ultimate Visual Guide, etc.--and reaction has been positive. Even George seemed very enthusiastic about Trisha's deluxe edition of Dressing a Galaxy, when we showed it to him.

And so we're now geting ready to solidify our nonfiction lineup for the next few years. We're meeting with our licensees and hope to have everything set up within the next few weeks. I can't say what exactly we're going to do, but if even if just some of the proposals on paper are accepted, fans should have a great bunch of books starting in 2006 and continuing long afterward. Also Last of the Jedi #2 is in book stores--and I just got in the manuscript for #4, which begins well (I haven't finished it yet).

However, if anyone sees a mistake--and there are some--or has something to say about any of the nonfiction or the Scholastic books (my areas), please drop me an email. These books are fairly complex and fairly difficult to put together, so errors slip in--but I'd like to correct them in the second printings, so eventually we achieve something akin to perfection. ha! ha!

So keep in touch,
all the best,

so you never edit fiction that's not schoolastic? anyway, those dvd tie in books seem cool! I hopefully will get some of them for christmas since my b-day's tomorrow and all of those presents have been bought. I am also a big fan of the making of ROTS just so you know!

Wow, that's one of the coolest things I've heard in awhile.

Maybe I should wait to get the books until they're closer to perfection...hehe. Just kidding.

Out of curiosity, have you always been the editor for Scholastic books? I seem to find at least two errors in each one I read, varying between spelling, chronology mistakes, and cultural flubs. I'm a geek, I know. But I love the Scholastic books dearly, and I feel like they get edited less stringently. ...Which is why I'm not assuming anything is due to you, since I so enjoyed Making of and Art of ROTS.

Anyway, I'll be sure to drop back by if I see anything in Last of the Jedi #2 (which is making me anxious by having not been read yet - stupid LSAT study interrupting my SW study!).

John Knoll's Creating the Worlds of Star Wars is mind-blowing - certainly one of the best behind-the-scenes books yet. The quantity and quality of the previously unpublished photos had me exclaiming out loud when I first paged through it. I haven't even had time to look at the CD-ROM yet, I've been so captivated by the writing and the images. Once I'm through it all I'll write a full review on my blog site.

Thanks for publishing this!

Okay, so to answer/comment on some of the above questions:

I'm glad you like the ROTS making of book. It was a long, rewarding experience.

We just agreed on the title of Last of the Jedi #4--it will be Death on Naboo.

We do really try our best on the Scholastic titles, editorially. Sorry if errors creep in! Let me know what they are!

Glad you like Knoll's Creating the Worlds--that one was a huge amount of work, but a lot of fun.

Someone wrote about the Ultimate Visual Guide, that we misspelled a planet name, but our continuity editor assures me it's Dorvalla not Dorvalia.

Okay, keep those comments coming!

thanks much,
JWR

Mr. Rinzler, what about the Death Star labeled in the DK Ultimate Visual guide at 120km in diameter (the old number), versus the corrected diameter in the DK Star Wars Cross Sections book: 160km in diameter? Was that a mistake?

The last round of non-fiction books have been out for a few months now. Any advance word on what we can expect next in terms of non-fiction?
