On the Way to Comic-Con
Hello One and All,
Next week I'll be going down to San Diego to participate in the craziness (and looking for some comic books from the 1970s). Lorne Peterson will be there--and I have to say his book, Sculpting a Galaxy: Inside the Star Wars Model Shop is looking fantastic. It's been fun to edit. We're pretty much done with the interior design, the writing is approved, the cover is done--George Lucas, Rick McCallum and Phil Tippett have done their pieces...and Lorne has done some incredible sculpts--just for this book! I can't say exactly what they are, but the deluxe edition will be at least as sumptuous as Dressing a Galaxy. Now we're working on the booklets that will go inside the deluxe edition, which comes out this November.

Let's see...what else is happening. I've finished the first draft of the Making of Star Wars book--this is for the original 1977 film. George Lucas read the rough draft, made some corrections, filled in some blanks, and signed off on that. So now the captions are done for the chosen images--many, many never seen before--and we're just starting the design for the book, which comes out in April 2007. So we're in fairly good shape.

We're really happy with the response to the four Sith covers for latest Star Wars Insider--thanks to Aaron McBride and Christian Alzmann of ILM! I think it was one of the highlights of 2006 for publishing. The New Essential Guide to Droids is either in or on its way to bookstores and it has some really great work in it by illustrator Ian Fullwood and author Dan Wallace. We're also finishing up the New Essential Guide to Alien Species--and it too has dozens of great new paintings.

And... there are more things in the works that shall remain nameless for now. But stay tuned to starwars.com...

thanks all,
Jonathan Rinzler

The New Essential Guide to Droids is a great book and nicely put together - hats off to all involved.
The Making of Star Wars is going to be a must next year, as we are are all swept up in the celebration of 30 years (30YEARS?!!) of Star Wars.
Good luck with all the new publications - and have a great time at ComicCon.

so.....The Making of the Making of Star Wars, 30 years later. Hope memory retention is a prerequiste for Lucasfilm employment. - so far everything you've been attached to has been stellar.....so this will be my New Hope. and also that this bodes well = authors and BTS folks will be attending CIV (another NEW HOPE!)

Good luck on scouting out and finding those comics you're seeking.
and I never did discover access to that shot from RotS I was seeking - Anakin on the verandah at night looking out at the Coruscant skyline - I believe Dusso was the matte artist. I contacted him but he said Lucasfilm now owns the artwork {sigh}.

Great to hear from you, J.W. (May I call you that?) :D
I own Making of Revenge of the Sith...what a great look behind the scenes.

Making of Star Wars sounds exciting, I can't wait to get it!

We're really happy with the response to the four Sith covers for latest Star Wars InsiderI received the Vader cover, and I loved it...very menacing. All of the covers were fantastic, especially the Emporer cover - it gave me the chills.

Wish I could make it to Comic-Con, but mileage and funds are prohibitive. Have a good time!

Thanks for all the positive feedback on past, present and future titles. One item: The making of Star Wars book will be based on archival interviews almost exclusively. So no need for memories to function (cos they usually don't)--there are actually many old interviews from back then that were never published. Should make for interesting reading, I hope...

Jonathan, I found your blog again. Many thanks for the interview last week, finished annotating it and read it back -there's some very neat stuff in there. Hope to cross paths again in the future, and enjoy comic-con.
Cheers mate,
