It's a Wrap--on the Making of Star Wars book
Well almost. While we're still noodling a few pages and the cover, I've just about finished work on the Making of Star Wars book. And, no, there's never been a making of Star Wars book before. We're talking about the first or "original" film--the 1977 Star Wars. There have been dozens if not hundreds of magazine articles, a few documentaries, and several books that have pretended to chronicle its creation, but Lucasfilm has never published a making of book about the original movie.

They were going to. Many many interviews were conducted--the details of which will be revealed later by starwars.com--with George Lucas, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Gary Kurtz, John Barry, Dennis Muren, John Dykstra, and lots of others--but the book was never completed. It was never even started. And that may be a good thing in so far as making of books circa 1977 were paperback knockoffs, generally, with a few black and white photos. The marketplace in 2007 for books on film is completely different, and, fortunately, very competitive--which means the publisher, Del Rey, is sparing nothing in producing a 300-plus page book with over 500 color images and a 150,000 word manuscript (courtesy of myself). That's more than many novels.

So now the book, I feel (none too objectively), really tells the story of how George Lucas and company made a film that no studio wanted made. And that story is amply complemented by a host of never-before-seen photos. It comes out in April 2007 just in time for Celebration IV.

Let's see...what else is happening bookwise: Ryder Windham is hard at work on two books for us; we've wrapped up work on the Complete Cross-Section book from DK, which has a few new vehicles in it. I've been working with George Lucas on a book he wants to see, which is coming along nicely and is always an adventure. There's also a very good scrapbook in the works as well as an amazing pop-up book. Yes, I said pop-up.

That's about it for my titles. More in March, I'm guessing.

I'd love to read about how Star Wars came about. Glad you all waited until now to make such a book. Look forward to reading it.

I do hope it's out in the marketplace in time to read thoroughly before CIV -
will you be attending and doing a session about the book?
Loved your Art of Star Wars. and your session at CIII.

The "Making of" book sounds awesome! And a pop-up book... my shekels are as good as spent. :)

Not trying to sound like a killjoy but I would rather see behind the scene videos, that go beyond what we saw in Empire Of Dreams. Not saying I will not check it out but I feel seeing it would be better than reading it.

This is some exciting stuff. I've always been enchanted by the history of this saga's beginnings, and how GL remained faithful to his passion and his vision. I will consider this book money well-spent. The Padawans will adore the pop-up book as well, I'm sure (who am I kidding - so will I!! :D) !

Silly question, but will the book be on sale AT CIV??

Yes, the Making of Star Wars book will be on sale at Celebration IV and I will be there to show a few things and tell a few stories that didn't make it in.

As for the unintentional killjoy, my take is that it's apples and oranges: there are things you can do in a documentary that you can't in a book, but there are things you can do in a book that you can't in a documentary. In terms of pure information a picture is worth a thousand words, but a documentary will go by in maximum two hours, while a book takes much longer to go through because it has more in it. And it may actually have more images. Hopefully people will want the oranges and the apples...

Thanks for all the positive comments!

I've been looking forward too this book ever since I read about it. After reading "The Making of Revenge of the Sith" I couldn't imagine a more comprehensive book. I told many people that it is by far the BEST "making of " book I've yet read. Any chance of a revised edition :D? That has the rest of the story. And or a new "making of book" for Empire and Jedi. I already have my $$ set aside for this book...can't wait!! Thanks for the all awesome Star Wars books that you have written and worked on (i.e. Making of Menace and Clones) thus far. Bring on some more. At a slow pace please, so us people with families and budgets can grab them all.

Finally! A book about the movie that dared the most! This film was guerilla filmmaking at it's best. Everyone involved gave their heart and soul (and several their health) for a project everyone ELSE thought was just fluff. It's an enigma I've been fascinated with for decades upon whose coattails an empire rides.

Please tell me some of it explores costume creation, what happened to the originals, any other interesting tidbits relating to same beyond familiar McQuarrie&Mollo sketches?

And never say never (sorry!) Full color 70 page Random House Step-Up book (for children) Star Wars The Making of the Movie by Larry Weinberg 1980. No comparison, just out there.

Anxiously awaiting April!

J W Rinzler writes: There is definitely info about the costumes from the old interviews, but I can't say I found any new sketches, except maybe one by McQuarrie for Obi-Wan.

We now have advance copies in-house and it looks pretty good.

And I'd love to put our a revised Ep III Making of--but the publisher will have to sign on for that. We'll see...

onward,

I've rec'd a couple of emails asking about whether the Making of SW book will include a summary of the Journal of the Whills. It will. There will also be an image showing George Lucas's first written page of the Journal (actually about a quarter of that page).

Keep those questions coming...

And to reply to those other questions, the Journal of the Whills is not about Mace Windu, though there is a character in there with a similar name who is a Jedi Master--but in character, the personage is more like Qui-Gon Jinn. Take a look at Insider 92 for more: Unknown Origins.

Howdee, I bought the making of Star Wars book a few months ago and have read it three times. The info in it , the interviews and also the backstory and original story drafts were an amazing read.

Fantastic!
