A 'What if' blog concerning Star Wars and Fable
Alright, so this is a departure from my usual blogs, but hey, my blog home page says anything and everything will be written in my blogs. So :p

Anywho, this is more of a 'what if' or 'what I'd like to see' type of blog as far as Star Wars go, and for that matter many RPGs to come. I've played most of the Star Wars games that have ever been created, and up until the most recent few years, most Wars games have been rather putrid since the old NES and SNES games. There have been exceptions, I'm a big big fan of all of the Jedi Knight games (except for Mysteries of the Sith, I don't count that as a JK game.) Star Wars Galaxies was an awesome and amazing game when it came out, and for the first several months, the publishes made it even better (vehicles, player cities, all of that jazz,) but like SOE did with EverQuest after they took it away from Verant, they decreased the quality of the game the more they modified it, until it became the boring, child's game it is today.

A few years back, I don't know when exactly, they finally created a unique and fun Star Wars RPG (Episode I video game didn't count as an RPG, it was too horrible to be considered as much.) That was KotOR (Knights of the Old Republic). Followed by KotOR II. Both games are awesome, and I highly recommend every single Wars fan that plays video games to try them both :)

Thing is, as much as I love RPG's (Final Fantasy 7 is still my favorite video game!) as long as they have excellent stories and characters, I can get bored with them. Even KotOR's real time action combat system can get boring because, like Galaxies, all you do is click and that's that. Your character attacks, you have no control how really.

And then this winter break, I finally got my hands on Fable. And I seriously believe this game is going to completely revolutionize RPGs for years to come! Maybe not at first, but it's a start. Why? Well it's an RPG, but the combat isn't 'pick a character, pick an attack, watch your character attack.' Instead, you control the character's movements and attacks fully, from a third-person perspective! The Sword fighting was fun, and requires some strategy (you can't just smash and smash, you have to dodge or block attacks, and find ways into the enemy defense postures, depending on how difficult the enemy is.) Furthermore, there's a magic system along side of it, some of which strongly reminds me of Star Wars (shooting electricity from your hand is the very first power your character starts out with!) And although some of the magic powers are useless in the game, others I couldn't have beaten the game without! (slow time and Berserk combined are two of the most useful powers you could ever get in the game!)

Now imagine a Star Wars RPG game with the same combat system as Fable!!! For that matter imagine KotORs I and II, or even the third one if they're making it, with that system! As I've said, I've always loved the Jedi Knight games, even if the story lines aren't that great. But I don't think the combat system for that game would quite work for this type, it'd have to be modified for the Fable-esque type game, and then you have force powers as easy to use as shift-click. It'd really be a dream come true for me as far as video games go, the depth of story and character found only in RPGs and the fun of a real combat system. :D

So what do you all think? Comments commments comments! :)
