Queen For A Day
Hello, all! I'm puzzled about something. I'm not sure if this has ever been brought up........

In The Phantom Menace, after R2 fixes the Queen's Naboo starship, he is presented before the Queen, who is actually Padme's loyal bodyguard Sabé. She calls on Padmé to take the droid to be cleaned.

Okay, wait a minute.... Why would she send the real queen of Naboo to clean up a droid, a droid that has no actual importance in the saga as of yet? Wouldn't she want the real queen to stay by her side in case an important decision concerning her planet's safety and security is to be made? Why did Sabé feel Padmé would be of better use cleaning a droid?

I understand the importance of making everyone believe Padmé was just a mere handmaiden, and that Sabé assumed the role as a decoy in times of crisis But why not let the Jedi, who we "presume" didn't know about Padme at this time, (maybe Qui-Gon knew and maybe he didn't.....) in on their little secret? Wouldn't that have been a helpful thing for them to know from the start, since they were more or less protecting the queen?

Am I missing an critical plot point concerning R2? Was he more important at the beginning than I realize? Was it really THAT important for Padmé to be the one to clean him? Of course we knew how significant R2 was at the end of TPM, and in the subsequent movies, but if you watch the saga from 1-6, R2 was introduced as just a astromech droid on the queen's ship.

So why tie the "real queen" up in a menial task that one of the other crew members on the ship could have taken care of??:|

Or was this a plot on Sabé's part to overthrow the thrown and take it for herself???? She did seem awfully comfortable in the role.;)

Something to think about.

You bring up a couple of great questions that I didn't when I blogged about this a good while back, GB!

Wouldn't she want the real queen to stay by her side in case an important decision concerning her planet's safety and security is to be made?

Wouldn't you think?!?!??? :O

I thought it was weird, too... I thought the decoy had a lot of nerve to assign the job to Padme... I would have fired her for that.... LOL

when I blogged about this I figured SOMEONE had to have brought this up! May '06 was a bit before my time, but it's scarry that we used some of the same wording!!;)

I thought the decoy had a lot of nerve to assign the job to Padme... Exactly!!!

I would have fired her for that.... Ha! LMAO!:^O

This gets my vote...... ;)

Maybe Padme wasn't entirely sure she could trust the Jedi..... ?:|

Everytime I see TPM, I always seem to sense a bit of "UUrrrrrrggggg, you're going to get it" when Padme is told to clean R2. Now, why she still goes on and does it is beyond me. I would have totally gone out the door and told another handmaiden to clean him up. But maybe it was really to just throw everybody off the scent that SHE is really the queen.

Who knows what holes one will fall through in the Star Wars plotlines. But we still love them! :)

This gets my vote...... Yesssssss!;)

Maybe Padme wasn't entirely sure she could trust the Jedi..... She trusted Palpatine, and look where that got her! ;) ;)

"UUrrrrrrggggg, you're going to get it" Didja notice just how surprised she did look when Sabe called on her? Part of the ruse?

But maybe it was really to just throw everybody off the scent that SHE is really the queen. That is a very good point, Slow!:)

Gotta love the "plot holes"!:^O

I, too, caught that. Hmm...............Of course the look on the Jedis faces when Padme reveals that she is the true Queen of Naboo, rather than Sabe seems to clinch the why. Padme didn't want anyone to know she was the Queen, so she pretended to be the handmaiden, even if it meant cleaning up an astromech droid.

Slow already mentions it in his answer.

Good question, BTW!!! I loved everyone else's answers, too.

She did, didn't she? ;)

I always thought it had more to do with setting up the real queen to look like a handmaiden. Don't forget, sometimes there's more safety in anonoymity.

Just trying to keep things secret. I don't like secrets--except the ones I tell!:)

Of course the look on the Jedis faces when Padme reveals that she is the true Queen of Naboo, I do think Qui-Gon knew something, or at least suspected the queen was switching places with someone. Make-up doesn't fool everyone.

Good question, BTW!!! Thank ya!:D

I go with the take-over plan. That seems like the more interesting plan. Then we'd have a whole 'nother storyline! Hmmmm.........Maybe Sabe was working with Palpatine......]:)

I found it weird also but then I thought that maybe knowing Padme as well as she might have known her, she thought Padme would like to get to know the droid or maybe she did it to get Padme's mind off of all the troubles on Naboo for a little while. Only GL knows what he had in mind.

Glad to see that most of us have the same thoughts going thru our head when watching the movies.

I'm glad you brought this up! It was always a little weird that Sabe made Padme clean R2. I mean, they didn't know how important he was back then. He was just the one droid that didn't get shot off the ship, so he was able to fix it!

Wouldn't she want the real queen to stay by her side in case an important decision concerning her planet's safety and security is to be made?

Exactly! Even more so considering the stunt they had just pulled!!

Notice you don't see her in AOTC

Ha! I love this entry! :D

I've thought about different things that have to do with the Queen/decoy/Padme', but not really about this! Good one. I sorta think the only reason we have that scene in the movie is to develop a bond between Padme' and Artoo.... nothing else. Just a cute scene to introduce them to each other more.... I doubt that GL put any more into it than that. :D

Again, great read! Now all we have to do is to get everyone else back here blogging again.... :^O

Well I thought Padme stayed in the room until that whole conversation was over, but yes, if a new problem arose, one would think it would be helpful to have Padme there.

Wouldn't that have been a helpful thing for them to know from the start, since they were more or less protecting the queen?
Um, yes!!! I can see it now: droidekas surround Padme, and Darth Maul corners Sabe. The Jedi Force-leap over to save Sabe as the droids open fire on Padme. Sabe screams: "No you stupid heads, that was the queen! I thought Jedi were supposed to be wise!"

Hmmmm...very interesting ;)

You know...I have often wondered why Padme' was instructed to clean R2, but never really thought about it the way you have. It would make sense to keep her close to the "Queen" in case of "emergency"...so why she wasn't is beyond me. I guess I really have nothing to add here...:8}

Notice you don't see her in AOTC

Decoys shmecoys. If you employ a royal guard/bodyguard and have the captain of the guard watching over you, you shouldn't feel the need to have to employ a decoy as well, otherwise what's the point in employing the guards in the first place. What - she never trusted her own staff, including Panaka? Christ, talk about paranoia and self-importance.

If you ask me, Sabé Knightley must have thought "I'll teach you, you pompous egotistical teenager. You aint paying me enough to be your loyal bodyguard AND your decoy. Clean the karking droid"

Now as for Palpatine - there was a guy who did it right. You never heard him say "Alright Tarkin, I'm going out to play some pool but I need you to put this cloak on in case some smeg-head wants a pop at me."

Experience see. Palpatine's been there, done that - top leader. Padmé? Amateur. If she doesn't get her management skills sorted quickly, she'll be dead before she's 30. Stress/ulcers/losing the will to live...I've seen it before, especially in these young yahoos.

I actually read this in "The Journal of Queen Amidala" - it's actually a Scholastic book my son and I read together from the library. Padme wanted to throw everyone of of her identity. She felt the best way to do it was to fully embrace the role of handmaiden.

It's a really great book! We're currently reading Anakin's Jurnal from Ep. I - it's cool to "hear" the insights given in first person!

Hope that helped! :D

I always kinda figured that she was doing it on Padme's (the real one, that is) orders. Padme clearly used the decoy Queen as a means of exploring outside the ship... why shouldn't she use it for the same purpose inside?

But now I'm not so sure... damn you allllllllllllllll!

I can see why she wanted R2 clean The rest of her ship is all shiny and clean. She'd want a clean droid on it. And R2's cute.
I think Sabé enjoyed bossing people aroud.

Well, I personally think that every queen in disguise should do a few tasks such as this. Then again, I think Sabe was onto something. Or she thought it was secretly set to kill the queen, and she secretly harboured the plans on becoming queen, so go kill the real one with no one knowing! This is sounding more and more like Shakespeares' Richard III! Or maybe she just did it by coincidence, OR because R2 was the cutest littlest astrotech, and only felt that Padme would be safe with her.....

Too many ides!:D

Well, a good security plan required that no one outside the inner circle be trusted--even the Jedi. And Panaka was wise enough to be able to handle any matter that came up while Padme was cleaning R2. But I agree with everyone else--while it was insulting, it would (needlessly) sell the fact that Padme wasn't the queen. (If they really wanted to sell it, she shouldn't have been in the room in the first place, she should've hid in the 'fresher like Obi-Wan in ROTS, creating prequel continuity ;) .) Good to see you again, GB :).
