 | How Did They Do That? |
Hi all! I know it's been a while...shame on me! I promise whole-heartedly to catch up on each and every one of your blogs. Eventually.
Everyone is well; the baby is growing like a weed--she turned 10 months old on the 22nd. How time flies!! Anyway, she's starting to pull herself up on things, and in her crib, so we had to lower the mattress so she wouldn't tumble out on her head.
When I went to put her to bed, the lowered position of the mattress was lower than I anticipated (and I'm a shorty), and I sort of....well....dropped her. Not to worry, it was a soft landing.
But that got me to thinking about something (as it always does) in Return of the Sith. When Padmé was unconscious on Mustafar, how in the world did the two droids get her aboard the skiff?
"We have Miss Padmé on board" 3PO, ROTS
How?
In the novelization of ROTS, Matthew Stover writes this:
He had no idea how he could get her back to her ship--he certainly had not been designed for transporting anything heavier than a tray of cocktails, after all...
.....3PO could see the little astromech: he'd tangled his manipulator arm in the senator's clothing and was dragging her across the landing deck.
Which still doesn't answer my question. How did the two of them get her up onto the bed in the skiff? I mean, really, she was "dead weight"!
Did you see the way 3PO dumped the dead jawas on the fire in ANH? It was just kind of a toss. I certainly hope he didn't toss Padmé on the bed like that! I know, I know, the jawas were already dead. And probably 100--give or take a few pounds--lighter. Maybe he was more flexible 20 years earlier? Maybe he was able to bend at the waist a little better?
If anyone has any insight into this matter....which I'm sure you will--you ALWAYS do--please enlighten me! I'll be back a little later to check things out.
Have a good day!!

Oh my goodness! Time does fly!!
she was "dead weight"!
This made me chuckle! I realize laughing at our heroine's passing is rather inappropriate, but ya know...
Unfortunately, I have no insight. Perhaps Artoo suddenly discovered some "special modification" or something... (Hey, it's happened before!)

Wow it's been a while since I visited the blogs. Shame on me!!!
Unfortunately, I haven't got a clue either. Hope someone can come up with a theory on this.
Great question
Promise to be on this site more often.

Well, considering that the ship had a medical bay, it stands to reason that it also contained a stretcher... with a repulsorlift or an anti-gravity device... that Artoo would of course, know how to operate via computer console...
And I love that description of Artoo dragging Padme across the tarmac... LOL... and touching on my last blog about costumes, fuss budget Threepio picked up Obi-Wan's cloak from the bottom of the ramp... LOL
Ten months, how time flies.... my grand-padawan is 10 YEARS old... oh my...

For a second there I thought you were suggesting 3P0 or R" had some how manhandled padmé in some form of assault later causing her to die. Thank god not.
Granny-Wan has the idea, however note that they would have to lift her somehow onto the stretcher

Hmmmm. . . I remember that passage from ROTS that you mentioned. . . Maybe R2 really did have some "Go Go Gadget" magic. We know he had rocket thrusters but in the OT he didn't have them. Maybe he had a special gear he shifted into and 3-PO pushed. . . Maybe

I realize laughing at our heroine's passing is rather inappropriate, but ya know... Well, really at that point she wasn't dead yet. So no harm-no foul. Besides, I made fun first. Ha!
BTW, I'm sorry my 66th blog wasn't splashier.....You know I really didn't realize it was the 66th until I published it. Could the 67th blog have as strong an impact?
it's been a while since I visited the blogs. Well, I'm in good company then, huh?

it also contained a stretcher... with a repulsorlift or an anti-gravity device... Ooh. that is good! That makes perfect sense!
and touching on my last blog about costumes, fuss budget Threepio picked up Obi-Wan's cloak from the bottom of the ramp... Well, Anakin did build him to help his mother.....I'm sure there were some house cleaning duties programmed into him.
I really do need to catch up on your blogs, Granny! I'll be around, chatting with my Crew, so I'll have some time this evening.

my grand-padawan is 10 YEARS old... oh my... Wow! Where does the time go?
I thought you were suggesting 3P0 or R" had some how manhandled padmé in some form of assault later causing her to die. Oh, no no no no!
however note that they would have to lift her somehow onto the stretcher Exactly! But you know, if they had a stretcher with a repulsor lift, they could have actually put the stretcher on the ground, rolled her on it, then raised it up and let it float onto the skiff.
Yes, I think that's the way I'll think about it.

I like Granny's idea, though! Yep, I do too!
Either that, or R2's got a "Go-Go Gadget Bodybuilder Arm" or something. Ha ha! i.e. "special modification"!

Artoo levitated her using his evil sith abilities. He had to have turned Sith at some point, having to deal with 3PO on a regular basis.
Another happy landing. . . Hee hee hee; Didn't even think about that!
Maybe he had a special gear he shifted into and 3-PO pushed. . . Maybe Maybe so! Where DID those rocket thrusters go in the OT? Did he over use them and they burned out?

I'm inclined to agree with the repulsor stretcher theory. Thank God for the fans to figure this stuff out right?
However morbid it might be, the idea that 3PO's bedside manner (as evidenced in his Ep IV jawa tossing) somehow contributed to Padme's demise in labor is a better explanation to me than a broken heart. My wife and I have both said this...what mother gives up the ghost when she has two newborn children to look after?
Gah...I'm not much of a Padme fan. I'm glad Leia took after....well, Bale, I guess.

R2 might have activated his jets one last time, not to fly but to get more propultion and drag her inside the ship, that would explain why she died, CO2 intoxication XD hahaha.
Now really ... thats a very good question, they might have threaten some of the workers of mustafar to help them or keep c3po for all eternity, =P

Wow!! Time really does fly by I'm so happy that she is doing well...I needed that good news after the winter I've had at work
I have no explanation as to how R2 and 3PO got Padme' aboard her skiff, either. Granny's explanation does make the best sense...and I'll take it

I agree and say that granny's explanation is the best, but I'll put forth a possibility that maybe there was a med-droid on the ship, but then it would have shown it helping Padme after the lightsaber duel. So, that was a waste of writing lol.

She woke up, a little dazed and groggy, Threepio helped her to her feet, and she slowly, awkwardly, stumbled up the ramp with Threepio's help, only to finally collapse on the bunk and pass out again from the exertion.
No biggie.

P.S. ( story conference between Lucas and McCallum)
George : So at this point Obi Wan leaves Mustafar with Padme...
Rick : Yeah but George, wasn't she lying on the ground after Hayden strangled her?
George : Oh yeah, well, ok, let's have 3PO do this big song and dance about how he and R2 had gotten her on board and let the audience mull over the details (chuckle)...
Don't tell me you can't picture it!

I vote for levitation of some sort. I know neither one was a droid with any Force-like abilities, but you never know . . . C3PO and R2 got out of some mighty interesting scrapes that droids of average calibre would not be able to squirm out of.
Your little story about "dropping" the baby reminds me of a trip we took many years ago when padawan # 2 was about 8 months old. Our family was in a hotel room on our way home from a vacation out west. Pad # 2 was in her little seat awaiting her dinner of strained peas or some other delicacy.

(cont . . .)
The seat was on the bed (not near the edge). I turned away for a moment to get her dinner ready. When I turned back to the bed to feed her, the chair was still on the bed, but no baby was in it. Her sister and daddy-O were on the other side of the room, sans baby. "Where's Padawan # 2?" I asked, concerned that she wasn't where I just had left her. "I don't know," hubby/daddy-O replied. Strange. She wasn't walking yet, so there was no way she could have just strode away! Strange indeed.
"Padawan! Padawan, where are you?" we called. Not a peep.

(the end )
I walked around the bed, and there was Padawan # 2 laying on her back, staring happily at the ceiling. All we could surmise was that she had pushed herself out of her chair, slid across the slippery surface of the bedspread and went over the edge of the bed . . . like water cascading over a precipice.
"Padawan! How did you get there?" the three of us exclaimed in unison. She just smiled and cooed at us, happy as a lark was she.

Well, considering he looked awfully flexible when he was getting thrown around in Ep II. You know, in the droid factory? I don't think it was so much him being flexible as him being flexed.
C3PO and R2 got out of some mighty interesting scrapes that droids of average calibre would not be able to squirm out of. True, very true. We may just have to chalk this up to one of those things that can't be explained.
Pad # 2 was in her little seat awaiting her dinner of strained peas or some other delicacy. Actually, some of that food isn't half bad!

All we could surmise was that she had pushed herself out of her chair, slid across the slippery surface of the bedspread and went over the edge of the bed . . . You know at that age, babies are more mobile than we give them credit for! Once they learn they can move the least little bit.....woosh! Away they go! Like little greased piglets!
They're also not as fragile as we might think! hee hee I'm glad she wasn't hurt!
