GB's Randomness - Pt I: Distractions At The Movies
We've all had them.

I'm not talking about the random cell phone ringing or babies crying....I'm talking about the comments from the peanut gallery--made during MY movies; the comments that have stayed with me up to 30 years!

My distractions date all the way back to 1977, when Star Wars was first in the theaters. My first viewing was everyone else's first viewing, so everyone was pretty quiet, just watching the movie with great interest. Well, after a movie has been in town for a while (and that one was, for a good 50 weeks--unheard of anymore) people tend to watch the movie less and flap their jaws more.

So are you still wondering what the heck I'm talking about? Well, here are my distractions--I just can't seem to shake them!

1) The group is in the trash masher and Luke is sucked under the water. When he reappears on the surface, he chokes on the muck. Some smart alec in the audience yells: "He's barfing!" Yeah. I can't watch that scene without thinking about that.
Thanks, dude!:O

2) I had to take my pesky little sister and her friends to the movies on a Saturday afternoon. You know how little sisters are. I was only 14 at the time, so I'm sure they seemed extra pesky. The battle over Yavin at the end, when Porkins gets hit, one of my sisters' friends comments: "Sorry, fat boy!" Cold blooded!

3) The medal ceremony at the end of ANH --- the scene where our beloved heroes are decorated for their heroism. Leia smiles sweetly at the two, and we are still not privvy to the info that two of the three people up there are siblings. Han bends to receive his medal and winks at our princess. **sigh** Leia then turns to Luke, who is eagerly anticipating receiving his medal. He bends, Leia places the medal around his neck -- what an exciting moment! Then some fool - probably "Barfing Dude" comments: "OOh, nice cuchongas!"

AARGH!!! People! Leave my movie alone!X-(

4) AOTC on the IMAX screen -- Absolutely LOVED it!! I don't have a bad thing to say about it.......exceeppppt........some of the close up scenes were a bit too up close. We actually got to see some of the zits that were beginning to form on Hayden's face! No one wants to see that! Oh, sorry....No one MY AGE wants to see that. ;)

5) Most recently, at the midnight showing of ROTS May, 2005, In a packed theater, Padmé gives up on living. A woman two rows up from me makes a face and tosses her hand up. Not that big of a distraction, but I'll probably not forget it because that evening was one of the most special to me...I had the great opportunity of taking my nephew, Michael, who was 16 at the time, and not quite as big a Star Wars fan as his auntie. But there I was, with my Star Wars buddy, standing out in the middle of the night at the movie theater. :x

So these are just a few of the obstacles I face whenever I watch my movies. So do the next fan a favor: If you're bored at the movies, please, SHUT UP and/or LEAVE!!!!!

Especially YOU, Barfing Dude!X-(

I can remember a kid saying "That's Princess Leia" during Han's thawing out party at Jabba's place... however, it was the 10th or 12th time I'd seen the movie so it didn't ruin anything, but it COULD have... I said "shsss" and the overpreotective, enabling parent said "he wasn't talking THAT loud!" Jerk...

I always told my kid if he talked during the movie, whatever movie, he'd have to go wait in the ladies room...

:^O

I also remember standing in line with a guy who told us that the first she saw Star Wars, his daughter peed in his lap during the attack on the death star...

What a bummer!!! People can be sooo silly sometimes. They have to say one little stupid thing that can ruin a wonderful experience for everyone else!

My guess is that these comments sounded funnier in their heads...!

A "friend" of mine snickered loudly in ROTS when Anakin pledged himself to Palpatine and again when Padmé died. Thankfully it was the 3rd time I had seen the film, so I had already felt the initial impact of these scenes...but it was only 7:30 on the opening day, so I know tons of people were watching for the 1st time. Ok, thanks GB....now I will be thinking of all of these things, too! :O!!! (just kiddling!)

I know what you mean by the little "distractions", and I must say that some of the things I think about now are mostly because of you girls, and because of the many bloggers we met at CIV...little comments that have permeated my SW watching, but have actually enhanced the movie b/c they "bring warm feelings to my heart" now....unlike Barfing Dude!! :p

This was really funny....thanks for a good Tuesday morning giggle :D

This one time, some fat kid behind me spilled his 44oz. drink of Big Red. This theatre we were at was only a dollar theatre so the drink ran under all the seats and I had to lift my feet up off the floor for the next 10 minutes of the movie (kinda hard for a 6ft. tall guy). As I recall it, we eventually ended up moving, but not before all of our shoes were sticky. The kid kept on talking though and about halfway through the movie he and his grandpa left. This wasn't at a Star Wars movie though.

Sadly the only SW movie I saw in theatres was ROTS in October 2005.

Awwww, GB, I'm so sorry you've had some experiences that have left such a "bad taste" in your mouth!

I know there have been distractions at theatres when I've gone, but I think I get so engrossed in the film, I can' remember one of them! I guess that's a good thing, huh?

My mom always tells the story about seeing "Aliens" for the first time in the theatre with my dad. At one of the (many) suspense-filled moments, she actually stood up and screamed (very unlike Gram Gram Shmi!). I wonder what folks thought of that? Of course, I think several other people also "shared" the moment. . .so no biggie (I still have nightmares about crab-like aliens trying to suck off my face! *shudder!*)

But! That's totally differnet than these rude comments! Gheesh. I. . HATE. . RUDE. .PEOPLE!

There. I feel better now. Thanks for commiserating.

I will never forget when I saw ROTS for the 1st time. It was near the end, just as Padme was dying, and these 3- & 4-year-old kids were running up and down the aisle! Arrgghh! Not only was the noise distracting, but what the heck were they doing at a PG-13 movie?

My hubby usually adds his brand of commentary to any movie. When we saw Titanic, in the middle of the movie, he said "The ship sinks". Not loudly, but still, it took me out of the moment of enjoying the movie.

I hate it when people talk and make rude comments during movies.

It's not a SW-related story, but I do have one. When I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2, there was a group of teenage girls in the theater that afternoon. All they did was talk, snicker, laugh, and make comments throughout the movie. I tried to keep my attention to the screen, but they would cause a stir every once in a while that would cause me to lose track of what was happening.

I know I've had other experiences, but cannot remember them at this moment.

Never!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blasphemy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big no-no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

;)

Hmmm....I don't think I have any crazy stories like that, but I've gone to quite a few movies with people who talk during them and I'm ALWAYS embarrassed by it because I know how distracting it can be.

GB, I will NEVER look at ANH the same way after this........ :O :^O ;) Nice blog!

I always told my kid if he talked during the movie, whatever movie, he'd have to go wait in the ladies room... :^O Never heard a peep out of him, did you?

his daughter peed in his lap during the attack on the death star... I think it had that effect on a lot of people! hee hee

My guess is that these comments sounded funnier in their heads...! You are probably right, JP. Probably someone who was trying to impress his buddies......

A "friend" of mine snickered loudly in ROTS when Anakin pledged himself to Palpatine and again when Padmé died.:O Was it the first time your "friend" had seen the movie?

People just don't understand.......

but have actually enhanced the movie b/c they "bring warm feelings to my heart" now.... Awww! I wish I had those distractions! I missed out on so much!!

I'm glad you enjoyed this entry, MOY2P --- I know I used a lot of frowning and angry Yodacons, but it was really meant to be funny. :D

some fat kid behind me spilled his 44oz. drink of Big Red. Oy!!! I hate that when you stick to the floor!

Sadly the only SW movie I saw in theatres was ROTS in October 2005. Oh man! Well, at least you got to see one of them. Maybe when they come out in 3D?? (IF they do)

I think I get so engrossed in the film, I can' remember one of them! I guess that's a good thing, huh? Wow, you're lucky! At least the "barfing" comment didn't come until after I had seen the movie 10 times. ;)

I wonder what folks thought of that? Ha! :^O I don't even know her, and I can picture that!

(I still have nightmares about crab-like aliens trying to suck off my face! *shudder!*) What about the alien thing coming out of that guy's chest? -- oh, sorry.....

just as Padme was dying, and these 3- & 4-year-old kids were running up and down the aisle! What are people's problems??? And yeah, that was too INTENSE a movie for a 3-4 year old to be at!

When we saw Titanic, in the middle of the movie, he said "The ship sinks". OMG!! That's hilarious! :^O I just boo-hooed at that movie! Sure, we knew how it was going to end, but the story was just awesome!

All they did was talk, snicker, laugh, and make comments throughout the movie. THAT'S why I like to wait until a movie has been out for a while, then there aren't as many people in the theater. The last movie I went to see I pretty much had a private showing to. There was only one other couple in the whole theater. It was awesome!

Never!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blasphemy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big no-no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :^O The whole package is nice, I just didn't need to see him up that close. Good thing he blew his nose before the scene!

My sister said when she went to see AOTC the guys that were there snickered
at the love story between Padme and Anakin.
She looked at them and asked " Just where did you think Luke and Leia came from.?"

I know some of the love story was "cheesey" but my sister's right.:)

Those are some great stories!

I saw AOTC at the imax and there were a lot of comments during the romance/love scenes, eventhough they cut some of the scenes down to fit the reels. I find a lot of the Padme/Anakin scenes cheesy so I was laughing along. :)

I know exactly what you mean, gb! I have a couple of friends, even, with whom I refuse to go to the movies because they like to chat, chat, chat during the films. Not constantly, mind you, but any chatting is distracting - and inappropriate during a film. Either wait 'til the end or don't bother going. That's how I feel.

I can't watch that scene without thinking about that.

The power of suggestion . . . I probably never will watch the scene the same way again either. ;)

# 2 - I always have a hard time with people when they make such comments!
