Enough Already
This weekend, I decided to watch Clerks 2. I have been incredibly forgiving of Kevin Smith because of his Star Wars references - as I think all of us have, because we get giddy when anyone mentions the movies in a film or TV show - but enough already.

We get it. Geeky arguments about who shot first, about which fan base is more loyal and fanatic, and which series of movies is the best. Ha Ha. You popped into the movie-making scene with a movie that incorporated the pop culture arguments that populated our youth. And then you kept making that movie for more than 10 years.

It's gotten annoying now. It might be nice to see a movie from a reasonably talented man that relied on real dialogue, not just one-liners and witticism blurted out by stoned friends.

It's also annoying because it's largely not the case anymore. Most of us are cross-genre fans anyway.

When Star Trek finally started to self-destruct (I'm looking at you, Voyager), we accepted all the Trekkies into our ranks. When Lord of the Rings came out, everyone rushed into the theaters to see the live-action adaptation of everyone's favorite 50-year-old fantasy story. We were all pretty happy, as it would have taken a brain-damaged gorilla to mess them up.

We all accept those in costume, and don't blink twice when some nut refuses to serve on a jury because her grasp on reality has slipped and she refuses to swear an oath to anything but Starfleet. (That really happened, kids, in the 1990s, in case some of you don't remember. It was in LA, I think.) But look at Mike Tyson. You don't need a costume to be a nut.

The point is, the fan bases have been cross-breeding for a long time. Most of us are on the Battlestar Galactica wagon now, and we'll be there for the next Indy movie, too.

So, please, Kevin Smith, I beg you. Enough already. Stop trolling the same waters for the same jokes. Everything has now taken on the tone of feeling like you're somehow better than your own geekishness, because you can make movies where characters talk about it. You've got skill and a reasonably good hand at editing. Stop painting sci-fi fans as impossible, dysfunctional dorks. (And while you're at it, if you're going to lay into religion so ferociously, try to make fun of something other than just Christianity. We get it. You have issues.)

As evidenced by how you handled the donkey sex show in Clerks 2 and the Silence of the Lambs joke that went on too long, you need to learn when to let up. We got the joke. Some of the stuff is still funny. It just isn't original anymore.

I reluctantly agree. Or maybe you've just opened the doorway for me to finally accept it. I really loved Mallrats, then the first Clerks. Jay and Silent Bob SB was only mediocre, but since Mark hamill was in it, and it was heavily SW-centric, I choked it down and convinced myself to like it. I actually thought Dogma was pretty good on it's own - and there weren't really SW refs in that (maybe some Force refs - I don't remember).

But still, after those first 2, I find myself rolling my eyes at it all. KS beat that horse to death, twice over. And I haven't even seen Clerks 2 yet. When I watched An Evening with Kevin Smith (havent seen pt. 2 of that either) I hoped to gain a little bit of understanding, but at that point he was planning to *not* make a C2 for these very reasons. Pretty ironic.

I am good friends with a married couple who enjoy Star Wars, but are not avid fans (they haven't even seen all of the prequels yet, so I bought all three movies for them for Christmas.) and they have suggested to me that I see Clerks 2, because of the Star Wars references. I still have not seen it yet, but I have to admit, I am curious.

I'm so honored that you remembered!! :p

But, yeah, you're right... BUT of all the SW references in Mallrats, I think the best moment is Shannen Doherty being called "Brenda" heh heh... still makes me laugh just thinking about it!!

I have never been a Kevin Smith fan... one viewing of Chasing Amy was enough for me. Blech! :::gagging Yodacon:::

Don't even get me started on his "issues" with Christianity (which are really issues with Catholicism, btw).

He needs to find a new routine.

Nah, no interest whatsoever in Clerks 2 ... it takes more then a SW referrence to bring me to donate a couple hours of my life to a film these days.....I mean, honestly....A donkey sex scene? .... ( how does that relate to Star Wars? ... or do I really want to know...LOL....)

Fan base cross-breeding....I love that one :) ....

ahem....Cpt Janeway rocks Kessel....and you know it :D .....

Oh, but she most definitely doesn't. And somewhere in your heart, in the heart of every fan of Voyager, you all know it.

It was OK. But it was too disjointed, and too quick. And again, many of the jokes were too easy. It does not stand up to more than one viewing, IMHO. Real worthwhile movies either stand up to, or get better with, each viewing.

Don't even get me started on his "issues" with Christianity

All I would like to know is, why is it that Christians (esp. Catholics) are required to have such a good sense of humor about their core beliefs - but other faith systems organize protests and riots when there's even a hint of criticism.

On the contrary, my wayward thinking friend .... My heart is quite sure of its feelings about Voyager....Afterall, all Trekdom would be speaking Borg had it not been for her and her crew...and she did get them all home...as she promised....

So there :D ....

True. Makes me wish Christians would stand up more when the faith is assualted.... not act out in a violent manner, mind you, but defend themselves in the public square more. As a Catholic, I do let some things slide if it's not too, too bad, but some things are so offensive that I just can't stand by and shrug. Some things are just too important and my faith is at the top of that list.

Nice blog!

Amen -- nobody I know is just a fan of one franchise. And Mr. Smith, who dabbles in all sorts of different genres, really should know better by now.
