An Intensive Look at the Identity of Darth Krayt
Update: For a look at who Darth Krayt actually is, check out my blog on the topic, Darth Krayt Revealed.

I've spent the last few days parsing through message boards all across the internet, hunting down theories as to Krayt's identity. I have a feeling this blog is going to be fairly long, so feel free to scan through it and read the parts of greatest interest to you. I'm going to begin by presenting the evidence we have that could hint at Krayt's identity, then provide a list of suggested candidates including why the are/aren't likely. I'll include my special odds for how likely they are that I came up with via a special formula that takes into account likelihood, buzz, shock-value, and a special "J" factor for creators John Ostrander and Jan Duursema... either that, or I made up the numbers off the top of my head. ;)

Anyway, onward and upward...

Physical Characteristics
The thing to remember with all of these characteristics is that due to the amount of time that has passed since any previous Star Wars material, any character could have undergone any number of appearance changes.
-Krayt's left eye is blue and right eye is orange/red; the blue one is likely a prosthetic
-He has a fairly large, muscular figure
-Krayt wears Yuuzhan Vong armor
-He has tattoos on his chin
-He suffers from a condition that he believes will claim his life in a decade or two

Quotes from Legacy's Creators Regarding Darth Krayt's Origins
Update: This quote sourced on 8/21/07
"For me, who Krayt is may not be as important as why Krayt is."
--Jan Duursema, Legacy #1 chat

"The founder and leader of the latest incarnation of the Sith order has a past that is kept secret even from most of his own dark side companions... A cunning tactician with a deep knowledge of the art of warfare... Born into a galaxy torn asunder by warfare and ravaged by the invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong... Armed with ancient knowledge gained from holocrons found on the world of Korriban, and driven by what he believes to be a higher purpose, Krayt's Sith order has been surreptitiously planning to bring its vision of peace and stability to the galaxy for over 100 years..."
--Star Wars Insider #88

"Darth Krayt has got layers and layers of nasty. There is much more to him than meets the eye... I wanted the armor to look almost painful to wear--and it is."
--Jan Duursema, Star Wars Insider #89

"There are no plans for an exploration of the Solo lineage for the foreseeable future."
--Randy Stradley, Legacy #9 letters page

"Oh, yes, my friend. Oh, yes."
--Randy Stradley, in response to "Any chance of running into any other descendents of any other Star Wars characters?", Legacy #9 letters page

"John and Jan say that answer will be revealed in issue #15. Can you stand to wait?"
--Randy Stradley, in response to "How long are we going to wait until we learn who Darth Krayt is under his mask?", Legacy #9 letters page

"You know, when I wrote that letter column, John and Jan were talking about that story arc being five issues. Now it has become six issues. So I'm no longer certain that the Krayt reveal will be issue #15. It might be #16. Either way, after reading the guesses here, I'm kicking myself that we didn't turn Porkins' vaccuum-frozen remains into Krayt..."
--Randy Stradley, TheForce.net message boards

Update: This comment added 6/23/07
"If we jumped right to issue #15, you'd miss all the great stuff leading up to [Darth Krayt's reveal]! Anyway, think how deflated you might feel if it turns out Darth Krayt is nobody you've ever heard of before."
--Randy Stradley, Legacy #11

Update: This comment added 6/23/07
"Much has been told about the legacy of the Skywalker family, but until now little has been said of the legacy of Obi-Wan Kenobi!
If you think you know the whole story, prepare yourself for a shock. In the wake of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan fought a lonely battle--the outcome of which rocks the future of the Star Wars galaxy!"
--Description of Legacy #16, third in the Claws of the Dragon arc and immediately following the issue that is to reveal Krayt's identity, from DarkHorse.com

Quotes from the Legacy Comics Themselves Hinting at Darth Krayt's Identity
"For over a hundred years, Krayt's Sith have hidden on the planet Korriban, using the miasma of the dark side that permeates the planet to conceal themselves."
--Legacy #0

"Nearly a hundred years ago, the Yuuzhan Vong invaded, plunging the galaxy into deep chaos--bleeding and weakening it. Patient in the Force, I waited, as the galaxy grew darker. I watched as the invaders, finally defeated, were allowed to live in exile on the sentient planet, Zonama Sekot. A folly designed by the Jedi. But ultimately, that too served my purpose... I made an alliance with the reborn Empire at Bastion... I know the Jedi from old. They could never share my vision. Two days ago the Jedi Temple on Coruscant fell. Today, at their academy on Ossus, the last of the Jedi will die. Sometimes, things must be broken in order to be rebuilt. As I have bent the Force to my will, so I will bend the galaxy and it will know order. My true work is about to begin."
--From the Holocron of Darth Krayt, Legacy #1

"The galaxy writhes in chaos and disorder. It requires a man of vision. I am that man of vision."
--Darth Krayt, Legacy #1

"My body fails me, Wyyrlok..."
--Darth Krayt, Legacy #1

"Perhaps a healing trance... or back into stasis...?"
--Darth Wyyrlok, Legacy #1

"I cannot go back into stasis. I am Emperor now and must be seen--and seen as strong... How long have I fought this thing which threatens to take me over and make me not myself? How much longer can I keep it at bay? A decade or two perhaps... not more... I have not lived this long or prepared so exactly to fail now!"
--Darth Krayt, Legacy #1

"For the past seven years, the former emperor Roan Fel has been a thorn in my side. He strikes from nowhere and then hides, like the Rebel fighters of old."
--Darth Krayt, Legacy #2

"So--the would-be Stih returns. My knowledge is not for you! You are not a Stih, Pretender, nore are your rabble."
--Ghost of Darth Bane, Legacy #5

"The heretic comes for the same reason it came last time. Its body is failing. It fears that which is consuming it."
--Ghost of Darth Andeddu, Legacy #5

"I often wonder if I shouldn't have ended the Skywalker lineage when I had the chance. Perhaps it was fated that I did not."
--Darth Krayt, Legacy #7

Reasoning Regarding Darth Krayt's Origins
(lots of the below reasoning is stolen from Grand Admiral Sean8's posts here)
--The Legacy comics do not want to tie the hands of the Legacy of the Force books series, nor do they want to ruin any of its suspense, by revealing Krayt to be a major player in that series
--His Vong armor implies he experienced the Yuuzhan Vong firsthand in some capacity
--His views imply a developed understanding of the Yuuzhan Vong war, meaning he had to be born before it so as to experience it in a way to gain understanding from it
--He spent some time in stasis
--His Sith Order is over 100 years old already
--His face is obscured, meaning either characters or readers would probably recognize him if he was unmasked
--He is likely to be someone familiar to Star Wars comic readers, and John Ostrander readers in particular
--He should be a fairly well-known character; it's unlikely he'd be a character who, when revealed, 90% of readers would go, "Huh? Who?"
Update: Reasoning added 6/23/07
--Krayt is likely to be someone we already know, as Mr. Stradley admits readers might feel "deflated" were he a completely new character
Update: Reasoning added 6/23/07
--Obi-Wan is likely to have something to do with Krayt's origins, since an issue describing a "lonely battle," likely on Tatooine, directly follows Krayt's big reveal. The battle and/or the issue likely detail either Obi-Wan fighting Krayt, or a battle Obi-Wan has that somehow leads to the creation of Krayt.
Update: Source added 7/26/07
--For an extended commentary on who Krayt could be, try TheForce.net's seven part Krayt Week, running 7/22/07 -- 7/28/07, Part One of which is available here

Possible Candidates for Darth Krayt
A'Sharad Hett--Introduced in Republic, Hett is a Jedi who fought in the Clone Wars and a human raised by Tuskens on Tatooine.
Arguments for--A known survivor of Order 66 who knew Anakin Skywalker personally, his being raised on Tatooine lends itself to Krayt's name, and Hett's facial tattoos are very similar to Krayt's. In addition, both fight with two lightsabers.
Arguments against--A'Sharad Hett might be a bit old to be Krayt, and was always a righteous Jedi. He also doesn't have the prominence that Krayt's identity might require.
Odds-- 7:1

Korto Vos--The son of Jedi Quinlan Vos, Korto was born in the final arc of Republic, just as the Clone Wars came to an end and the Empire was born.
Arguments for--Born at almost a perfect time for Krayt, Korto was also created at a time when Jan and John were brainstorming for Legacy. And with the series being titled Legacy, Krayt could certainly have one of his own.
Arguments against--In the final panel of the entire Republic run, Quinlan tells his son, "I swear that darkness will not touch you." Plus, Krayt comes across as a little whiter than Korto should be.
Odds-- 10:1

A Previously Unknown Descendant of A Known Star Wars Character
Arguments for--The mystery seems dependent upon the reveal of someone semi-recognizable, but with the entirely new time period, an entirely new villain would also be nice. Plus, it sticks with the Legacy theme.
Arguments against--It's a completely new character that would require a lot of backstory, particularly since we need to know how he ties into the character he's descended from. Possibly more trouble than it's worth, compared to an entirely new character or a character we've seen before.
Odds-- 12:1
Of possible Unknown Descendants, the following merit specific consideration:
A Vos descendant other than Korto--This could be another child of Quinlan's, or the child of Korto.
Arguments for--He wouldn't have the cloud of Quinlan's words hanging over his head, but would still be a Vos.
Arguments against--If it's going to be a Vos, why not just make it Korto, since he's of the right age?
Odds-- 20:1
Update: This character added on 6/23/07
The son of Obi-Wan Kenobi--The unknown child of the Jedi Master who stood guard over Luke Skywalker.
Arguments for--The issue of Legacy directly following Krayt's reveal details a "lonely battle" Obi-Wan once fought; the preview announces, "until now little has been said of the legacy of Obi-Wan Kenobi! If you think you know the whole story, prepare yourself for a shock."
Arguments against--A "lonely battle" doesn't hint at the creation of a child, and this would be a huge detail to throw into the Star Wars universe, and greatly change everyone's view of Obi-Wan.
Odds-- 50:1
A descendant of A'Sharad Hett--A child or grandchild of the aforementioned Tusken-raised Jedi.
Arguments for--The benefits of A'Sharad (Tatooine origin, tattoos) without the drawbacks (upstanding citizen, too old).
Arguments against--A'Sharad's 2nd- or 3rd-tier as it is. His child is just one more step into obscurity.
Odds-- 55:1
Jacen Solo's Sith apprentice, if it's not Ben Skywalker--Jacen is likely to take a Sith apprentice, and there's at least a decent chance it will be someone other than Ben.
Arguments for--This would add some great continuity between the two series.
Arguments against--The timeline seems a little off, it could tie the hands of the book authors, and a lot would hinge on the publishing order of the books vs. the comics.
Odds-- 66:1
Jacen's "pet" or his Sith creation--Lumiya claims Jacen will create a "pet" of some sort on his journey to Sith-hood.
Arguments for--This adds continuity between the two series without exclusively tying the hands of the Legacy of the Force authors.
Arguments against--The idea of Jacen's making a pet is vague as it is, plus that would be a weird reveal unless more information is available at the time.
Odds-- 87:1
Update: Odds worsened (from 50:1) and "Arguments against" updated on 6/23/07 due to Luke's comments in Exile
The illegitimate son of Luke and Shira Brie--The two "dated" between Empire and Jedi in the Marvel comic series, and Shira/Lumiya recently made a comeback in the Legacy of the Force book series.
Arguments for--Would add an emotional dynamic and tie it in well with the Legacy of the Force books, plus Luke tells Mara when going through Lumiya's apartment in the aforementioned book series, regarding her bedroom: "There is nothing in there that I haven't seen."
Arguments against--The whole thing would feel like an Arthurian rip-off. Plus, such a storyline would have more practical usage in the books, where Lumiya actually has a role. Also, Luke tells Mara that he wasn't involved physically with Shira/Lumiya.
Odds-- 100:1
A descendant of Ysanne Isard--Leader of the Empire for a period some time after Palpatine's death, it is unknown whether she had any children.
Arguments for--She has two different-colored eyes.
Arguments against--Is that really a reason for her to be the mother/grandmother of Darth Krayt, when one of his mismatched eyes is probably a prosthetic, anyway?
Odds-- 150:1
A brother to Roan Fel--It has been neither confirmed nor denied as to whether Legacy's Emperor Roan Fel has any siblings.
Arguments for--We have yet to have a real brotherly feud in Star Wars.
Arguments against--Must every Star Wars conflict be Family Feud for control of the galaxy?
Odds-- 275:1
A son of Ben Skywalker and Tahiri Veila--It's assumed Ben will carry on the Skywalker genes (and name) through children; Tahiri is a Jedi once close to Anakin Solo who has been reshaped by the Yuuzhan Vong.
Arguments for--Tahiri's Yuuzhan Vong influence could tie into Krayt's Vong armor, plus it gives Krayt some major player connections.
Arguments against--Tahiri is 13 years older than Ben, and do we really want to hear, "No, Cade, I am your grandfather"?
Odds-- 300:1
A brother of Kol Skywalker--We saw Kol in Legacy #1, but like Roan Fel, it has been neither confirmed nor denied as to if he had any siblings.
Arguments for--Revealing his existence could make for some shocking imagery.
Arguments against--"I am your uncle" even lamer than "I am your grandfather."
Odds-- 350:1
A brother of Waxarn Kel--Kel was a minor Jedi during the New Jedi Order who allowed his body to heal naturally from battle wounds to show the danger the Yuuzhan Vong posed.
Arguments for--Waxarn is just knowable enough to make a blip on the radar.
Arguments against--If you're going to make such a small blip, why make a blip at all?
Odds-- 1,400:1
Another clone of Jorus C'Baoth--A Jedi in the Old Republic, Jorus had an insane clone named Joruus who aided Grand Admiral Thrawn post-Endor.
Arguments for--He'd be an easily recognizable face, and one known to have Force ability.
Arguments against--Joruus served his purpose.
Odds-- 2,100:1
Another clone of Palpatine--The former Sith Emperor, Palpatine's clones have given the galaxy hell in the past.
Arguments for--He's taken over the galaxy before, he can do it again.
Arguments against--Does anyone really want to see him do it again? People hated the first cloned Emperor enough as it was.
Odds-- 3,600:1

Kir Kanos--A former Royal Guard that has survived as far as is known, evidence says he might be Force Sensitive.
Arguments for--He's popular among comic book readers, and Carner Jax, intended to be cloned from the same source as Kanos, spent time as Lumiya's apprentice.
Arguments against--The clone plotline is not canon, and therefore it's not even for sure that Kanos has Force abilities.
Odds-- 15:1

Tholme--Master to Quinlan Vos, Tholme was a contemporary of such Jedi as Qui-Gon Jinn and Ki-Adi-Mundi and made frequent appearances in the Republic series.
Arguments for--He's a creation of John and Jan, a known survivor of Order 66, and even has a blue prosthetic eye.
Arguments against--He'd be very, very old, and spent time helping Quinlan return from the Dark Side; as a "Qui-Gon-like figure," it's unlike he'd slip to the Dark Side.
Odds-- 20:1

Miko Reglia--Apprenticed to Kyp Durron, Reglia was tortured at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong, and has been labeled the first casualty of the Yuuzhan Vong War.
Arguments for--He has first-hand experience with the Vong, and we all know the rule about seeing the body...
Arguments against--...But to strip someone of their title of "first casualty of the war"? Surely there are better candidates, even if someone presumed dead is desired. Plus, odds are against someone that originated outside of the comics and might not be known to comic readers.
Odds-- 45:1

Vader's "Secret Apprentice"--Currently being developed for the Force: Unleashed next-gen game, this character is to be trained by Vader to hunt down remaining Jedi.
Arguments for--First-hand Sith knowledge that very few contenders have, plus the game was originally due for release close to the time we should learn of Krayt's identity.
Arguments against--The game was developed very separately from the comic storyline.
Odds-- 50:1

Update: Odds worsened (from 15:1) on 6/23/07 due to Mr. Stradley's comment that fans might feel "deflated" if Krayt is an all-new character
A Completely New Character
Arguments for--Legacy is set far enough in the future that the Star Wars universe is ready for a completely new villain.
Arguments against--What's the point of a big reveal if there's no one special under the mask? Plus, isn't Krayt entitled to a "Legacy" of his own?
Odds-- 75:1
Of possible Completely New Characters, the following merit specific consideration:
Update:This character added 7/28/07
The Reader's Own Face--A mirror inserted into the comic to reflect the readers' own faces back at them.
Arguments for--It would be a nice, surprising twist.
Arguments against--This might work in, say, a video game, but to try it in a comic would get complicated, especially the the cost of printing a mirror every time Krayt's face is shown.
Odds-- 3,551:1

Update: This character added 3/31/07
Boba Fett--The infamous bounty hunter, Fett is known to be alive and kicking at least at the time of the Legacy of the Force series.
Arguments for--Boba Fett is a very popular character who has once again come into the spotlight in the novels. He could use Vong implants to sustain his life, and Jacen could somehow enable him to use the Force.
Arguments against--Fett and Jacen don't get along. Besides, it might be a bad idea to limit such a popular character's future like this, cutting down on any bounty hunting adventures--the kind he's loved for--that he could have up until the Legacy comic series.
Odds-- 80:1

Ganner Rhysode--Trained as a Jedi under Luke Skywalker's Order, Ganner gave his life valiantly in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong.
Arguments for--A beloved character and excellent combatant, Rhysode has more name recognition than almost other 2nd- or 3rd-tier crossover candidates from the books.
Arguments against--Ganner is so beloved because of the way he gave his life; for him to have survived and gone on to be a Sith would belittle the character.
Odds-- 115:1

Update: Odds bettered (from 700:1) due to increased buzz on 4/15/07
Nom Anor--A prominent Yuuzhan Vong and schemer during the Vong's invasion.
Arguments for--Anor was a popular villain and someone people "love to hate."
Arguments against--Anor is thought to be dead, he's a Vong with no Force connection, and Krayt appears to be human under his Vong armor.
Odds-- 125:1

Update:This character added 7/28/07
Mace Windu--A former Jedi Council member, Windu is thought to have met his end at Palpatine's hand.
Arguments for--Windu arguably fell to the Dark Side when he decided to kill Palpatine rather than let him stand trial, and his body was never recovered.
Arguments against--He's just such a huge name to do something like this to... plus, Krayt's skin tone seems lighter than Windu's.
Odds-- 126:1

Update: This character added 7/28/07
Daye Azur-Jamin--A background character in the New Jedi Order series, Azur-Jamin has a prosthetic left eye and was turned to the Dark Side by a female Force-sensitive Yuuzhan Vong.
Arguments for--He has a prosthetic eye, a Vong connection, and went Dark Side.
Arguments against--Azur-Jamin was redeemed by a team of Jedi, and is quite obscure a character.
Odds-- 127:1

Wurth Skidder--A Jedi Knight under Luke Skywalker, Skidder is thought to have perished fighting the Yuuzhan Vong.
Arguments for--If anyone presumed dead is to be Darth Krayt, it'll be someone thought killed by the Yuuzhan Vong.
Arguments against--Most comic readers would probably say, "Who?"
Odds-- 130:1

Zekk--Trained to Jedi Knighthood under Luke Skywalker's Order, Zekk is a former love interest of Jaina Solo and had a brush with the Dark Side in his teenage years.
Arguments for--Zekk is of about the right age for Krayt, and still a peripheral character in the Legacy of the Force books.
Arguments against--Not very well-known by comic readers, Zekk doesn't have the popularity to deem him worthy of a cross-medium trade.
Odds-- 145:1

Rosh Penin--A Jedi trained at least partially by Kyle Katarn, Rosh had a brief run-in with the Dark Side when he joined the Disciples of Ragnos.
Arguments for--Rosh has already touched the Dark Side.
Arguments against--Designed as an annoying character, his reveal would likely be disappointing even for those who knew who he was.
Odds-- 150:1

Jaden Korr--Another Jedi under Kyle Katarn, Jaden was the protagonist in the game Jedi Academy.
Arguments for--Jaden was at least a well-liked character, who depending the game ending could go Dark Side.
Arguments against--The canon game ending has Jaden fully in the Light.
Odds-- 180:1

Quinlan Vos--A Jedi throughout the Republic comic run, Jan and John told stories of Vos' work as a double agent and his brushes with the Dark Side. He eventually overcame and survived Order 66.
Arguments for--We know Jan and John love writing about Quin, and he's easily identifiable to and popular among comics readers, as well.
Arguments against--Quinlan had a brush with the Dark Side and overcame. Besides, do Jan and John really want to commit him to the Dark Side, especially when he should be off raising his son?
Odds-- 250:1

Update: This character added 4/14/07
Kyp Durron--A Jedi who has brushed the Dark Side before, Kyp is known to be strong in the Force.
Arguments for--He's tasted the Dark Side before.
Arguments against--Why have him fall to the Dark Side again?
Odds-- 735:1

Tahiri Veila--A Jedi trained in the New Jedi Order who has major Vong influences upon her.
Arguments for--Her strong Vong connection and her Force ability bring her to the forefront of one's mind when contemplating a human wearing Vong armor.
Arguments against--Krayt is pretty clearly a male.
Odds-- 750:1

Callista--A Jedi from the Old Republic who trapped her consciousness in a machine, then re-possessed a body and "dated" Luke for a while.
Arguments for--She can now only contact the Force through the Dark Side, and it's conceivable she could somehow transfer her consciousness into a male body.
Arguments against--Such a convoluted origin story seems like overkill.
Odds-- 775:1

Asajj Ventress--A dark acolyte under Count Dooku, Ventress escaped to an unknown location near the end of the Clone Wars.
Arguments for--Her fate is wide open and she's known to be alive (at least up to a point), and she lost an eye in Obsession.
Arguments against--Krayt remains a male. And Ventress would definitely need to hit the gym.
Odds-- 820:1

Ben Skywalker--The son of Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker, Ben is close with Jacen Solo.
Arguments for--Krayt's problems could be due to the disease Mara contracted while Ben was in her whom. Plus, he could end up being Jacen Solo's Sith apprentice.
Arguments against--"Cade... I am your grandfather," coupled with completely tying the hands of the Legacy of the Force authors.
Odds-- 1,020:1

Ken--The alleged grandson of Emperor Palpatine, Ken is thought to have attended Luke's Jedi Praxeum.
Arguments for--He carries with him a powerful Legacy, could be the right age, and is fairly unused.
Arguments against--He's unused for a reason. Few people want to awaken the travesty that is the Glove of Darth Vader series.
Odds-- 1,138:1

Roan Fel--Emperor during the Legacy time period.
Arguments for--He's a Force-sensitive who might have wanted to solidify his seat as Supreme Ruler of the galaxy. And, he's never seen with Krayt...
Arguments against--...Because Krayt wants him dead. Plus, his age it doesn't really fit with Krayt's time frame.
Odds-- 1,175: 1

Janek "Tank" Sunber--A childhood friend of Luke's, Tank was a conscript in the Imperial army.
Arguments for--A character with some following whose story is told via comics.
Arguments against--Is this guy even Force-sensitive?
Odds-- 1,220:1

Brakiss--A former student of Luke Skywalker's, Brakiss formed his own Shadow Academy.
Arguments for--He's a Dark Sider who has substantial power in the Force.
Arguments against--He's dead. And he wasn't really a character popular enough to bring back.
Odds-- 1,350:1

Update: This character's odds bettered (from 4,321:1) and his Arguments for/against rewritten on 7/26/07 due to TheForce.net's discourse on him for Part 5 of Darth Krayt Week
"Resurrected/cloned/hybridized" Anakin Solo--Jacen's younger brother, Anakin was developing into a powerful Jedi until his untimely death during the Vong war.
Arguments for--Plenty of people would like to see Anakin return, and his personality seems one that could, under the right circumstances, evolve into Darth Krayt.
Arguments against--George Lucas asked that Anakin be "removed" from the place of lead character, and it's unlikely a character killed in the books would be revived in the comics.
Odds-- 1,401:1

Jorallen--A Jedi Knight slated to appear in the nixed Knightfall Trilogy, he would have participated in the war with the Yuuzhan Vong.
Arguments for--The title Knightfall seems to hint at dealings with the Dark Side, and reportedly, the intended cover of Jedi Fire, that trilogy's second book, contains an image that resembles an unmasked Krayt.
Arguments against--That trilogy was canceled. Jorallen's a nobody who might not even exist in canon.
Odds-- 1,450:1

Kol Skywalker--The father of Cade Skywalker, Kol was killed on Ossus by the Sith.
Arguments for--Or maybe he faked his death to devote himself to the Sith. Palpatine had Grievous kidnap him, after all.
Arguments against--Do we really want another "I am your father" Skywalker moment?
Odds-- 1,600:1

Sora Bulq--A former Weequay Jedi, Bulq joined and served under Count Dooku for a large part of the Clone Wars.
Arguments for--John and Jan have used him before, and it would be nice to get a non-human in such a major role.
Arguments against--It might be nice, but Krayt looks pretty clearly human. Plus, Bulq's pretty clearly dead.
Odds-- 1,900:1

Update: This character added 7/28/07
Darrus Jeht--An Old Republic Jedi who spent time training under Mace Windu, Jeht is known to have been influenced towards the Dark Side by Palpatine himself.
Arguments for--It would be a nice touch if Palpatine were to have a hand in Krayt's creation.
Arguments against--Question: "Who?" Answer: "A Jedi who died in 19 B.B.Y."
Odds-- 2,830:1

The Mayor of Sernpidal--A mysterious figure in Vector Prime, the mayor of Sernpidal acted as though he knew Han Solo and Chewbacca. The mayor threw himself into a Yuuzhan Vong dovin basal in an attempt to save his world.
Arguments for--A brave soul who has an era of mysteriousness about him.
Arguments against--Who is this guy? He's so mysterious that it would be a bizarre reveal. Plus, he's dead.
Odds-- 3,000:1

Update: This character added 7/28/07
Owen Lars--The man who reared Luke, Owen was thought killed by stormtroopers.
Arguments for--Growing up on Tatooine, Owen's Force sensitivity could have been overlooked. He could have raised Luke with plans to turn him to the Dark Side.
Arguments against--We saw what we're pretty sure was the body, and while an old curmudgeon, Owen just doesn't come across as Sith-quality.
Odds-- 3,249:1

Update: This character added 7/28/07
Owen Kenobi--A continuity hiccup created Obi-Wan's brother Owen.
Arguments for--What with the comic publishing order, it's likely Obi-Wan has something to do with Darth Krayt.
Arguments against--This character's existence is entirely the creation of a retcon. He really serves no other purpose, and is probably left where he lies, in the dark.
Odds-- 3,250:1

Update: This character added 7/28/07
Elan Sleazebaggano--A former death stick pusher on Coruscant, Sleazebaggano is known to have "rethought his life."
Arguments for--Rethinking one's life could lead to becoming a Sith Lord, right?
Arguments against--Let's be reasonable. Sleazebeggano never exhibited any Force sensitivity, and that would just be one bizarre reveal.
Odds-- 3,332:1

Stam Reath--A Padawan to Echuu Shen-Jon, Reath appeared in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and is thought to have met his end at the Battle of Geonosis.
Arguments for--His master had an intense encounter with the Dark Side, and his apparent death frees him up from any other possible storylines.
Arguments against--Why bother with such a low-caliber guy?
Odds-- 3,400:1

Zayne Carrick--A Padawan during the Old Republic, Zayne became an on-the-run fugitive when framed for the murder of his fellow padawans.
Arguments for--We know Krayt spent time in stasis, and his masters had a vision that could label him the "destroyer of worlds."
Arguments against--Zayne's story is ongoing in the Knights of the Old Republic comics. Why ruin its suspense?
Odds-- 3,500:1

Update: This character added 7/28/07
Luke Skywalker--Father to the New Jedi Order, Luke Skywalker is the son of Darth Vader.
Arguments for--Who better to be the Ultimate Overlord? And, hailing from Tatooine, "Darth Krayt" fits quite nicely. Plus, that Force Ghost of his could be just a Force illusion.
Arguments against--He's the Grand Master of the Jedi Order, and the poster boy for the Light Side.
Odds-- 4,449:1

Update: This character's odds worsened (from 3,720:1) and his "Arguments against" updated accordingly on 7/28/07 due to his taking of the Sith name "Darth Caedus."
Jacen Solo--The son of Han and Leia Solo, Jacen has begun down the Dark Path in the Legacy of the Force books.
Arguments for--Early on, he was seen as very likely. So perhaps Dark Horse began a misinformation campaign to make his reveal so surprising.
Arguments against--He's already got a Sith name, and there's never before been a Sith who changed their name--not to mention ruining the end of the Legacy of the Force series. Randy Stradley said no Solos will be appearing anytime soon, and he wasn't joking.
Odds-- 4,450:1

If anyone has any other candidates they'd like to suggest or evidence they'd like to provide, comment or e-mail me about it and I'll happily add it to the above information. In addition, if new evidence comes to light, you can count on me to add it here and/or update character's odds.

Wow, you weren't kidding:O. I am very impressed by the amount of research and work ethic put into this blog. I would love to see a totally new character, and that would open up a totally knew background, and provide more debatable topics, and more books/comics. :D

impressive.....most impressive blog.

First let me applaud you for great research. An amazing blog. I have not actually read the comics, but I am aware of the story. I just have one question: In what time period does Legacy occur?

I want to e-mail you, but it is about something else, is it okay if I do.

"100 years beyond everything you know about Star Wars..." That was the tagline. Issue #1 was approximately 130 A.B.Y.

Go for it.

That is quite a long time, don't you think some of your candidates would die of old age?

Many of them would, yes. But Darth Krayt spent time in stasis, as per Darth Wyyrlok's comment in ish #1. Other quotes indicate that Krayt has not only been alive for over 100 years, but has been gathering Sith forces on Korriban for that long.

Excellent blog. The whole idea of an newer, newly established character seems like a good idea on paper. But when it comes down to it, and say Log'aan Draeke is under the mask, you would be like, "Oh wow. A new character. That's great. 15-16 issues leading up to this nobody I can't pronounce." An older character sounds like a wiser move. Or, perhaps not even an older character sounds good too.

Maybe if it is someone like Vos' son, it'd be cooler. I mean, its less work for everybody because a) already established origin and b) he already has a look and we have a feel for him. I hope its not someone like Anakin. (Yes I am bringing movies to EU.) Maybe L.C.F. (Legacy Creative Force, no pun intended) takes it upon themselves to reveal the whole Chosen One motif. Plus, it might blow over badly with fans.

its alaways a skywalker that poses the strongest sith powers as we know from darth vader and luke, so really why not a offspring of luke, he is so posed to have alot of kids

Excelent research!

There is something that is bothering me. In the comic were Darth trayon reports her failure to Darth Krayt, she tells him that a Skywalker was there. He answeres "I wonder if i shouldn't have destroyed the Skywalker lineage when i had the chance". So he must be someone close to the skywalkers. But what 'chance' is this? Is there any book or comic that i don't know about that had the skywalkers in danger of extinction? I think this is an important, but annoying clue. I have no ideia who the guy is...?:|

Interesting thought of Anakin Solo being Darth Krayt, that would be very interesting. Loved all the research you did.

i think so, it has to be a skywalker, think about it, cade skywalker is already turning to that path anyway, so why not have a battle for the throne, the heir to the throne, a fight between the last skywalkers. that would be awsome if i say so my self

Thanks for the plug, Master Aaron! Isn't it nice that we have you to correlate and deconstruct all of these bizarre online theories? :p

The mayor of Sernpidal? Wow, I have yet to hear that one... From which board did that theory come? :^O

One of TheForce.net's threads, actually... you know, it's an interesting sensation when you're having trouble separating the joke speculation from the real deal. And it's not even as cut and dry as one might think--the Zayne Carrick idea was originally posted as a joke, except then someone gave it a serious slant.

Awesome entry. Very well researched and unbiased.

I haven't encountered A'Sharad Hett yet, but it sounds like a good match up to me. At the moment, I'm leaning between Ben Skywalker, because of the Vong armor that he used while sparring with Luke, and Kir Kanos, because of the Vong retcon in Crimson Empire II.

Darth DeBar, is thinking along the same lines I am.

Nom Anor.

-He has a fake eye.
-He has worn masks that make him appear human in the past.
-Krayt wears Vong armor.
-They where able to sabotage the Vongforming (Anor was an amateur shaper)

Its probably a long shot, but I don't see which other established character fits.

Now I have never read any of the Yuuzhan Vong novels, but I thought that the Vong operate outside of the Force....so Nom Anor turning out to be a Sith Lord sounds a bit daft to me...A'Sharad Hett seems the obvious one to me as he looks very similar, although why does every major new character have to be related to a previous character? Palpatine and Maul came from out of nowhere, why can't Darth Krayt?

AWESOME. This is amazing.. how did you compile all this? Personally, my bets are on Ben,
Vader's apprentice, or a Shira/Luke child. Though.. I can't help but think that IF Cade had a brother... IF Roan Fel had a brother... I'd bet it would be Krayt, simply for the irony possibilities. To quote Darth Jecod: impressive.....most impressive blog.
