Top Ten Star Wars Mysteries Warranting Further Explanation
The Star Wars Universe is ever-expanding, and always presenting us with new stories. However, as it has grown, the Expanded Universe has turned up a number of mysteries. Some of these are present only in the EU; others are created by the movies, but the growth of the EU has made the answers to the questions they ask feel more absent. Whether they are holes that need to be filled in or simply the outer reaches of the Expanded Universe that the EU seems sure to tackle eventually, this is my list of untold stories I want to hear.

The Top Ten Star Wars Mysteries Warranting Further Explanation

10. Neva Kee--This little-known podracer from Episode I barely makes a blip on most fans' radar. However, there's a juicy nugget in his databank entry that begs for further explanation: "Kee left the Boonta Eve race in the second lap, wandering off course in the Hutt Flats. He was never seen again." There's got to be a story here. Why would the little guy just disappear? Was it intentional? Though it certainly seems like a small question in the greater scheme of Star Wars, it's one that nags at me. Whatever happened to Neva Kee?

9. The Fate of Asajj Ventress-- The Count Dooku's dark acolyte caused all sorts of trouble for our heroes during the Clone Wars. Naturally, a villain of this type deserves a climactic resolution to her story. And she got one... but that resolution ended with her on a med ship, mind-tricking the pilots into taking her as far away from the Clone Wars, Dooku, and the Jedi as possible. Did she perish on this journey? Did she settle down somewhere and erase her former past? Did she run into some sort of threat? A villain with as central a role as Asajj Ventress had deserves a story arc with a little more closure.

8. One Thousand Years of Sith-- The history of the Sith is a long and mysterious one... particularly from the Ruusan Campaign to The Phantom Menace. As the Jedi's greatest enemies, every fan would love to know as much as possible about the history of this lethal order. But from Darth Zannah to Darth Plagueis, a millenium passes, and the only names that come up are Darth Millennial, Darth Cognus, and Darth Vectivus. What were the Sith up to? And what sorts of Sith reigned in this era of secrecy? As the definitive bad guys, the Sith are a huge part of the Star Wars story.

7. Halagad Ventor and the survivors of Order 66-- We know that Darth Vader tortured out of Halagad Ventor the location of a secret Jedi base, housing what Ventor believed to be all the survivors of Order 66. But who were these survivors? And where was this base? Is it connected at all to the Jedi base Ferus Olin is creating in the Last of the Jedi books? And what about K'Kruhk--now that he's appeared in the Legacy comics, what was he up to for 140 years? This is luckily an area where we are likely to get answers in the coming years, particularly with the Live Action TV Series. But let's hope that besides just exploring the Dark Times, future Star Wars EU answers questions about the Jedi Purge that older EU sources raised.

6. The Contents and Origins of the Prophecy of the Chosen One-- For playing such a crucial piece in the Prequel Trilogy and the Star Wars Saga overall, it's surprising how little we actually know about the Prophecy of the Chosen One (see here). So where did this prophecy come from? And what does it actually say? Does it do more than just prophesy the coming of a chosen one? And what are the implications of the arrival of the Chosen One? Though these are questions that might never be answered, they are quite central to Anakin's story and the Star Wars Saga as seen in the movies.

5. Yoda's Story-- Not Yoda Stories, but Yoda's story. What's this guy's background? With 900 years to work with, there's a lot left to explore. We've got the pseudo-canonical origin story of Yoda seen in Star Wars Galaxy #9, but even a confirmation or denial of this would be great. And, of course, some fleshing out of the story would also be appreciated. Yoda's also got the Chu'unthor storyline when he's 700, but that leaves plenty of time before and even after for some stories about the diminutive Jedi Master. And while we're at it, some information regarding his species and/or homeworld would be quite interesting, I'm sure. Yes, we'll probably never get that much of an origin story on our little green friend, but nevertheless, some more of Yoda's history would be welcome.

4. Jedi Service Corps-- This is where they send all the Younglings who aren't quite good enough to be Padawans. And, while we might or might not have gotten a story on them last year (discussed here), the story of an almost-Jedi has-been at the age of thirteen would be quite riveting. While this seems to be an area of Star Wars EU pushed to the side, stories exploring this topic could be both thought-provoking and add quite a bit to the fabric of the Star Wars universe.

3. D'harhan-- This bounty hunter originally reared his ugly head-like appendage in The Bounty Hunter Wars Trilogy, but more recently made a reappearance in Jude Watson's Last of the Jedi series. What's up with this guy? He's a humanoid being whose head has been replaced by a cannon, and indications are that he's from the Clone Wars-era and one among others. Oh, and he's also kind of friends with Boba Fett. What is he? Some sort of weird Republic or Separatist experiment in advanced weaponry and/or bigger-and-better troops? His recent reappearance shows that he hasn't dropped off the map entirely. Hopefully a further explanation is forthcoming.

2. Darth Plagueis-- Ever since his mention in Revenge of the Sith, fans have been hungry for information on Darth Sidious's master. The announcement and then cancellation of the Darth Plagueis novel did nothing to satisfy this hunger. The guy who trained Palpatine's gotta be bad news--plus, rumor has it has he has the power to stop people from dying. Plus, did this guy have a hand in Anakin's creation? Eventually, we've got to hear more about this guy. He's too intriguing not to.

1. The Whills-- Who are these guys? All we really know is that a Shaman of the Whills taught Qui-Gon the secret to surviving death. We also know they've been with the Star Wars story since its beginning (per the first-ever released Star Wars product, the original novelization). There are also indications that they're some sort of record-keepers--we know they keep a journal. But beyond that, we know amazingly little. We don't even know what their secret for surviving death is--or how Anakin was able to tap into it. Are they a species or an organization? Are they physical beings, or have they all transcended death? Hopefully further information will be forthcoming, but it's likely to come in bits and pieces.

...Well, this is my list of the Top Ten Star Wars Mysteries. What did I leave out? Did I get the order wrong? Or draw your attention to a mystery you were unaware of? Now's your chance to respond--please, speak up!

Not Yoda Stories, but Yoda's story.

Great list -- they all belong!

As an archeologist, I'm interested in the history of that former civilization on Polis Massa.
And what about those rock formations that kinda resemble heads in the podrace course? The sourcebook says that the Tusken Raiders gave the place a wide berth and considered it a place of bad fortune.

some information regarding his species and/or homeworld would be quite interesting,

Don't expect it; at least anything canonical. One of George Lucas's rules for the EU is that Yoda's homeworld or species must never be discovered/explained. It's just one of the things we're not supposed to know. It's meant to be a mystery.

I loved that game...

Me too. It was endlessly entertaining.

I've got the answer right here.

Anybody else suspect that the new Clone Wars cartoon will kick all that's been written about Asajj Ventriss out the window? I think she'll probably die in this and all that stuff will have to tossed or retconned.

hmmm...good list! I didn't know anything about Neva Kee disappearing. Strange...

About all the Sith in between Zannah and Plagueis, I'd love to see more about not only the Sith, but the galaxy in general. There's a HUGE amount of totally unexplored time there.

I have a few things you missed. For one thing, this has really pissed me off since seeing AOTC, and that is the whole clone army deal with Sifo-Dyas. I think its just lame to believe the real guy thought of the idea of building a clone army. ITS JUST Darth Tyranus...!!!! Impersonating him. Besides, Jango said he was recruited by a man named Tyranus. So it just makes sense. Not to mention every Sith has to sacrifice someone to take the mantle.

Another thing is the cave on Dagobah. Its filled with dark side energy. Yet no mention of how it got that way. Maybe a Dark Jedi/Sith died there...??

I too have wondered about the fate of the Jedi in hiding. The 1000 years of Sith we hear nothing about. Lot of room for a novel or two. Especially since we are running out of room to go with the main canon characters from the movie. Luke/Leia/Han are really getting old now.

The cliffhanger with Asajj Ventress really ticked me off. Kinda like the ending to the Robotech saga. I just wanted to see some closure.

I think that Plagueis is the coolest character to be mentioned simply because he taught Palpatine all he knows. So you know despite his end, that he was nothing to mess with. Why else would Palps take him out like that...???

Another one is why is it called the CLONE WARS (plural)???? Its just one war. That is why i think that episode one should have picked up where 2 did. The start of a war. then a break then, another one. Or something to that effect.

I don't know, i grew up with the OT and thought that when they announced the prequels as every fan did, that i would get something more. Instead they left me with more questions than answers. I guess that was George's way of keeping a few secrets from even us. Just to keep it interesting, but didn't work for me. At least ROTS was on point...

Thanks for the replies, all!

KaiYves, I'd agree that some more info on Polis Massa would be much appreciated. And I hadn't heard that about those Tatooine rock formations... intriguing...

Corterville, I'll have to read through that some time. Looks like fun!

Caledre, I'll admit that there's a lot about continuity and the new Clone Wars series that worries me. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but good point.

DarthPlaguies99, I guess I felt like the Sifo-Dyas mystery has largely been explained--albeit not in as satisfactory a manner as some of us might have hoped. As for Dagobah's Dark Side cave, I've heard something about a Bpfasshi Dark Jedi. And I s'pose it's the Clone Wars because it was fought on so many different fronts and planets.

And commanderbly, it looks like Kir Kanos is MIA right now. There's another good mystery!

Those all sound very intriguing and certainly expand my sense of the SW universe. I personally want to know more about Shmi. I tend to think that she wasn't always a slave, but that her odd pregnancy turned her life into something she didn't expect.

Good one. :)
