I was a Teenage Jedi

Altering the Saga
Yes, I know it's blasphemy. But just for the sake of fun, if you could change one thing about the Star Wars Saga--Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy, something that affects both--what would it be?

Would Han sacrifice himself in Return of the Jedi like Harrison Ford wanted?

Would you just get rid of Jar Jar and let the whole thing shake itself out without him?

Maybe add a more prominent Jedi who's an alien, or a woman?

Or maybe you just want your "Yub Nub" back?

Personally, I can think if two possible changes I'd go with--one more subtle, the other quite a bit more blunt.

The subtle change that I'd consider has to do with lightsabers. It's actually quite simple: I'd have Obi-Wan use Qui-Gon's lightsaber in Attack of the Clones. There's some pretty powerful symbolism what with Obi-Wan taking up his master's blade when he loses his own--in the trial that gains him his Knighthood--and a lot of that symbolism is lost because Obi-Wan does not continue to wield Qui-Gon's blade.

Yes, it would mean Obi-Wan has a green lightsaber for the majority of Attack of the Clones. But I see little problem with this--heck, it might even be fun.

And yes, Obi-Wan would lose the lightsaber to the Geonosians, just like he loses his own in the current version of AOTC. But there would be important symbolism here, too. As the Jedi are plunged into a Not-So-Holy War against the Separatists, being used as pawns by Chancellor Palpatine's Republic, Obi-Wan loses the saber that connected him to his master.

It's a subtle change, but I really like the symbolism it would carry with it.

The next change is quite a bit more obvious, and probably one a lot of fans would be clamoring for: it's The Jar Jar Issue.

Now, I want to be clear--I've never had it in for Jar Jar the way a lot of fans do; I don't see him as some big mistake that is in need of correction. However, after reading this, I really saw for the first time how Jar Jar could have been improved.

In the above link, the author replaces Jar Jar with everyone's favorite Giant Green Star Wars Rabbit, Jaxxon. Personally, I don't think the use of a pre-established Expanded Universe character is warranted, but to get back that Han Solo element so many critics complained was missing from the PT, why not make Jar Jar a Scrappy Doo-like character? It could've been a lot of fun.

In closing, I want to be clear that I don't think Mr. Lucas "blew it" or anything of the sort on either of the above issues. Neither one is an element that needs to be changed; rather, I've merely offered what I consider improvements on already good elements.

Do you have other possible changes that you think could have improved upon our beloved saga? Or do you want to endorse or reject one or both of my proposals? Please, share your opinions in the comments section!
