Todos hemos escuchado acerca de la "saga" de Star Wars, la historia que nos une como fans y que en diferentes aspectos y diferentes niveles nos atrae y nos mueve.

¿Pero exáctamente qué es una saga?

De acuerdo al Diccionario General de la Lengua Española, una saga (sustantivo femenino) es una leyenda poética basada sobre las primitivas tradiciones heroicas y mitológicas de Escandinavia. Por extensión, también se refiere al relato de la historia de dos o más generaciones de una familia. Finalmente, se entiende como una dinastía familiar.

El Oxford English Dictionary nos aporta otra visión, puesto que el sustantivo saga significa una historia extensa de logros heróicos, principalmente prosa narrativa medieval en Nórdico antiguo o Islandés antiguo. También se la define como un recuento largo de una serie de incidentes.

El diccionario también nos aporta el origen de la palabra, que viene del Nórdico antiguo y significa "narrativa".

La saga de Star Wars. Ahora se entiende mejor, ¿no creen? Una gran secuencia de eventos heroicos que cuenta la historia de dos generaciones de la familia Skywalker.

Ahora que sabemos el significado de la palabra, no nos resta mas que esperar al primero de noviembre para disfrutar en la comodidad de nuestro hogar los seis episodios de la saga más grande de todos los tiempos, la de Star Wars.

We've all heard all these about the Star Wars "saga", the story that binds us as fans and which attracts and moves everyone of us in a different aspect or level.

But, what exactly is a saga?

According to the General Dictionary of the Spanish Language, a saga (female noun) is a poetic legend based upon the primitive heroic and mythologic traditions of Scandinavia. By extension, it means the tale of the story of two or more family generations. Finally, it's also understood as a family dynasty.

The Oxford English Dictionary gives us a different vision, where the noun saga means a long story of heroic achievement, especially a medieval prose narrative in Old Norse or Old Icelandic. Also it is defined as a long, involved account or series of incidents.

This dictionary also sheds some light about the word's origin, which comes from Old Norse and means "narrative".

The Star Wars saga. Now we understand the phrase, don't you agree? A big series of heroic events which tell the story of two generations of the Skywalker family.

Now, armed with the meaning of the word, we can only wait for November the first to arrive and enjoy in the comfort of our homes the six episodes of the biggest saga of all, the Star Wars saga.
