 | Episode III: Revenge of Star Wars |
Revenge. Of. The. Sith.
I have just got back from seeing it and....yes, I think you all know what I'm going to say. It was everything I expected, everything I wanted and more. The bittersweet feeling I mused upon in the last Blog is strangely absent from my feelings. I feel only....light. It's over, but George has definately gone out with a bang, the likes of which seen only once before. Yes, a Big Bang indeed.
Alas, Revenge is not perfect - and nor did I expect it to be - and so, rather than gush on about everything I loved, for it would take too long, I'll merely list the few things I disliked about the movie. This is not to say these elements ruined the movie in any way, as I still love this film!
For starters, the Mace-Palpatine duel was somewhat less than I had been led to believe. It was slow, to put it mildly. Palpatine is supposed to be a super-fast swordsmaster, and yes, I know you can't make a duel too fast, but it seemed a bit of a letdown. More, Palpatine looked like he'd fallen to the Silly Side of the Force - between Ian's weird facial contortions and the blatantly obvious use of a (much younger and non-Ian-like) stunt double right at the start of Palpatine's attack, the fight seemed very unpolished. Still, the lightning scene was fantastic, and Mace's demise sent a chill through me. Very dark.
Being a spoiler-head, I also noticed the large amount of material cut from the final film. I'd heard the scenes involving Mon Mothma and the formation of the Rebellion had been cut, but there were many instances of minor alterations and omissions. One of the most disappointing was Obi-Wan's "I loved you, but I could not save you", and a number of Jedi missing from the Order 66 montage.
However, the rest of the film was absolutely amazing. The story, dialogue and acting is much, much improved, and the final battles are worth the wait. Even Vader's "Nooooo!" seemed fine, despite the criticism it has received. And the talking battle droids were not half as annoying as I had feared - and Artoo's heroics even brought a smile to my face.
Perhaps I'll delve deeper into the final Star Wars movie in future Blogs, but for now....
I need a lie down.
