Star Wars: Massively made and Multiplayer Mayhem
Now that it has been a week and you, the fans, have had time to weigh the announcement of The Old Republic, I wanted to jump on here and get some feedback.

Personally, I believe the game has a lot of potential. As an ex-Galaxies player I know how great and how terrible an MMO can be, and I know the level of love the Star Wars universe gets from developers. It's a thing of pride to make a Star Wars game, let alone one set in an MMO.

My concerns? I have a few, but I also have a history of trusting BioWare and finding things to turn out well. Hell - they did Neverwinter Nights, people. The definitive RPG experience on the PC. I think we can cut them some slack ;)

First, I just can't figure out how they'll implement various parts of the gameplay. They want to focus on dialogue, but in a multiplayer (heavily grouping) style of game, how do you allow dialogue amongst a group of players and a single NPC. The dialogue can't be generic but must be tailored for each person. Doesn't that mean the result of the dialogue must be different as well?

Second, companion characters sound fun, and I loved them in KOTOR. At least, I loved them for a while. Over time they got repetitive and more of a pet then a companion. This was probably a limitation of the medium, of course, because I wasn't able to download new content and the size of the game was necessarily small. Steady updates will probably make this go away.

Thirdly - and this is a personal hangup - I don't know how they'll make me care about the story. Yes - I know -BioWare are the KINGS of storytelling in games, and Star Wars is rife with things to write story about. I just want to know how they'll move us past clicking 'next' quickly to get through the dialogue so I can go kill 20 sewer rats.

But, all these hangups and question will probably be taken care of - I have faith in BioWare. Mass Effect, KOTOR, NWN, and more - all scream that they'll figure it out.

But what are YOU thinking?

I think it can only go well -- BioWare not only has its own experience to go on, but they can also learn from the strengths and/or follies of Galaxies. And it's a great move to set this around KOTOR, which is easily the most fertile era of the EU.

I have a lot of trust in BioWare too, but I think they have a lot on their plate with this. I think a lot of people have high expectations that the MMORPG will be revolutionized with TOR. There also seems to be some jaded folks out there - First, MMO players who had bad experiences with SWG, and second - non MMO/PC gamers who wanted KOTOR 3.

I'm of the latter group, but I'm glad TOR isn't being considered KOTOR 3 because it gives me hope for a future console KOTOR 3 *begs* :D

Otherwise, TOR looks to be huge and exciting. I just hope the graphics get plumped up a little more.

I'm very hopeful and excited about TOR, but I can't say I'm not disappointed. I believe in Bioware very much and I hope if TOR does well Obsidian will be able to make a real Kotor 3 based of the story for Revan in TOR-- so we know exactly what happens and can see and feel it.

Always be with you there, JK. This game is something grand but it's beyond, in a way, Kotor 3-- beyond in the sense that it seems it will set even more of a stage for it. Maybe I'm wrong...God, I hope not!

Well....I love Bioware. They consistently turn out high quality products.

But...MMO's are universally bad. They're just timekillers. The only way an MMO can ever work is if Bioware intends to hire 24 hour shifts of writers to be online and interact with players. Otherwise, it's just more grinding.

I also think paying a monthly fee to play a computer game is madness. Since they probably won't port this to 360, I probably won't get a chance to play it. I'm always excited by MMO's and I've been dissapointed every single time.

I think it'll turn out as well as expected, but I certainly wish there was going to be a KOTOR III...

I think you could make it work if it was akin to the style of Guild Wars. Each quest and mission involves only you and your group. While in the exploreable areas, you won't run into other players, only in towns and outposts. While there are disadvantages to this, I think it would solve the personalization problem. Of course, I'm a big Guild Wars fan, so I'm a bit biased.

I will try it out, I think. I love Galaxies, but it frustrates me a lot. Hopefully TOR won't be so repetitive and be more reliable! I'm tired of crashing and coming back dead... LOL... and what's the point of going 10K to find your next victim? But I digress... lol

The era is a great time for storylines, but you're right the dialogue part seems tricky. I hope they don't make it too complex in the programming area or there will be problems. Spekaking of that, I can't imagine the amount of time and the number of programmers involved in creating an MMO.
