Republic Commando: Order 66
Rarely do I find an EU book that brings the Star Wars magic back full throttle, but Order 66 did that for me. There's some fans who aren't fond of Traviss as an author, but like her adoption of Mandalorian culture to breed family, familarity, and humanity into clone soldiers even less, but I love it. I'm also part Mando, so it's quite possible I'm almost completely biased.

Granted, Sev (my father's name) wasn't exactly a Traviss creation--he's 100% LucasArts, but it still counts! And, since Mirta is my real middle name, and she just so happens to have curly brown hair, I really should have put more effort into making a costume of that for Halloween.

This book was so heart-wrenching in that way only a preexisting ending can be (much like ROTS) that I almost wanted to put the thing down at several happy points before I came to the end of what I could only predict as a very sad ending. I bounced between excitement and horror-filled dread. At least for me, this was an emotional roller coaster. Then again, you either believe in the Mando magic and fall for Traviss's ability to write gut-wrenching truths, and play along in her world, or you don't.

Frankly, I do, and I can't wait for her Imperial Commando series next year!

That and the third Bane book!

I didn't like those as much. But totally with you on the excitement for IC! ;)

I think she handles the Mandos very well, she just needs to stay with that (her strengths) and avoid the main characters of the saga. (Other peoples' strengths.)

I think a LOT of the authors need to improve on their interpretations of the main characters. I don't think Traviss should be singled out as having a weak spot on this point. Despite mischaracterization, I think most authors do an okay job for my EU tastes.

Is Zahn doing anything with SW anytime soon? (or in the recent past?)

I hope he does. He's the best when it comes to authoring material for the 'verse.

In my most humble of opinions, of course.

Currently reading a few books by S.M. Stirling. Very good writer as well.

I'm very picky with my SF.. my favorite at the moment is China MiƩville. What type of SF does SM Stirling write?

Zhan did ALLEGIANCE last year. Set shortly after the events of Episode IV, and featuring many of our most beloved characters from the EU and the the OT. Like most of his books, at least the ones I own(Allegiance, Survivors Quest), it is a great read.

I read/own Allegiance and Survivor's Quest and I agree: they were good! :)

The series I just finished starts off with a book called Dies the Fire. Basically, a mysterious Change happens worldwide and every piece of electronic technology, or certain chemical reactions like that which causes gunpowder to explode, stop working. The world is basically thrust back into the Dark Ages.

I thought the idea sounded kinda cheesy at first, but he handled it brilliantly. It's set in Western Oregon, just south of where I used to live...

Order 66 is one of the greatest stories in the entire history of star wars. I had to put the book down when Mirta died. It was too much. I absolutely love Karen Traviss as a writer and am impatiently waiting for the Imperial Commando series.

You mean when Etain died.. Mirta was LOTF. :) I can hardly wait for Imperial Commando, too!
