Welcome ladies and gentleman to the first annual Worst Lines of Star Wars ceremony, I am your host MarcKingston, let's get right to it.
"One thing's for sure, we're all gonna be a lot thinner!"
Our first crapper comes from Han Solo in Episode IV, during the trash compactor scene, just as the walls are closing in. This one's particularly painful coming from a great actor like Harrison Ford (undoubtedly the best actor in the entire series, Ian McDiarmid as a close second), because you know in his head he's saying "Oh god this is horrible, make it stop, make it stop for the love of god, think of the children," if not something more extreme.
"Would you get going ya pirate!"
Not especially cringe-inducing, but it certainly deserves mentioning. This one's from Lando Calrissian in Episode VI, shortly before the Battle of Endor, when Han is showing clear reluctancy at letting Lando use the
Falcon. The mediocrity of the line is enhanced by Billy Dee's extended hands while delivering it; I couldn't help but imagine him with a frizzy mustache and a cigar between two fingers.
"Yippee!"
Moving on.
"I hate sand. It's coarse, and rough, and irritating...and it gets everywhere."
This of course comes from Anakin Skywalker in Episode II, while he and Padmé are looking upon the lake on Naboo. My main problem with this is the massive emphasis Hayden Christensen puts on the first syllable of "everywhere," coming out with "
eeeeverywhere." If it wasn't for that I would probably let it slide.
Actually, while we're at it let's include pretty much everything Anakin says in Episode II.
"This party's over."
This oddly enough comes from Mace Windu during Episodes both II and III, during the arena and arresting scenes respectively. The interesting thing it's so much of a cliche that in a way it becomes more awesome because of it. If anybody knows why this is, please tell me.
"Are you an angel?"
Whatever.
"Beep beep beep debeep beep wooooo."
This comes from R2-D2 in Episode IV, and I don't know what George was thinking when he sat down and wrote this. The line shows such shallowness in the Artoo character that I think it really hurt the film. It's even worse when you think of Artoo's incredible line later on, "Wooo beep debeep beep buzz beep debeep." What a classic.
"Oh this is such a drag" and "I'm beside myself."
Both of these are from C-3PO in Episode II during the arena battle scene, and both of them suck the big one. The term "bad pun" is redundant for a reason, and that is because there are no good puns. Its savior is the hilarity of seeing Artoo drag Threepio's head behind him.
And now, the all time champion of bad script writing...
"Oh Anakin, you'll always be that little boy I knew on Tatooine."
Ugh....this comes from Padmé in Episode II during her first meeting with Anakin. I've spent hours trying to think of scenarios in which this would be an acceptable or plausible thing to say, and I've come up with nothing. I suppose it was meant to refer back to Episode I, but for god's sakes we know he's Anakin, we know he was a little boy on Tatooine who knew Padmé, we don't need to be reminded. I could go on for ages, but I can't be bothered.
Well that about does it, so stay tuned next year when we examine the Best Lines of Friday the 13th, which vows to be an extremely short article.
